FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Warm again, with late week rain"

We kicked the new week off on a very warm note as daytime highs reached the lower to middle 80s in many spots with lots of humidity. Not much change will happen in the short term, but we are going to track increasing rain prospects by mid to late week along with a slight cool down.

Once the low clouds and fog lift, we'll be treated to a mix of sun and clouds throughout the afternoon. Just like yesterday, the urban corridor is expected to stay mainly dry, while a few showers pop during the heat of the day across our interior zones. Daytime highs will range from 80° along the coast to the middle 80s elsewhere.

A few clouds will linger across the region tonight with the possibility of a patch or two of fog to develop. Temperatures will also be slightly cooler as they settle into the lower to middle 60s by tomorrow morning.

By midweek, we'll be tracking another weather system due in from the north and west. This will increase our clouds on Wednesday with widely scattered showers overnight through the Thursday time frame. Daytime highs will return to seasonal averages as they top out in the middle to upper 70s, while overnight lows dip into the middle to upper 50s. Clouds will be slow to clear on Friday with more sunshine during the afternoon. The weekend is looking very nice with lots of sunshine with temperatures warming into the lower 80s, while humidity levels stay rather comfortable. Return to index of stories...

"They are going to send her to a different world."

THE SIX-YEAR OLD IS IN STATE CUSTODY BECAUSE OF HER MOTHER'S ON-GOING DRUG ADDICTION. ACCORDING TO HER GRANDMOTHER, CHILD WELFARE WORKERS WANT TO REUNITE THE LITTLE GIRL WITH HER BIOLOGICAL FATHER IN MEXICO. HE'S A CONVICTED FELON, WHO SERVED TIME IN OREGON BEFORE BEING DEPORTED.

"They've only said the father takes precedence, the father trumps anybody else. and I would understand that if he weren't a violent felon."

THE GIRL'S GRANDMOTHER WANTS CUSTODY. AND DOESN'T UNDERSTAND WHY CHILD WELFARE WORKERS WOULD SEND A U-S CITIZEN TO A FOREIGN COUNTRY.

"To me it is more like being deported or exiled, if you forcibly remove someone from a country or from their country, what is it? "

SHE'S APPEALED TO STATE LEADERS AND EVEN THE GOVERNOR, WHO RESPONDED THERE'S LITTLE THEY CAN DO.

"So let me get this straight, the governor can stop and execution of a convicted murderer but he can't save an innocent 6 year old."

OREGON D-H-S SAID IT CAN'T COMMENT ON SPECIFIC CASES. BUT THEY ISSUED A STATEMENT, READING IN PART: "WHILE THE REUNIFICATION PROCEDURE IS A LEGAL OBLIGATION TO REUNITE CHILDREN WITH THEIR LEGAL PARENTS, THE WORK OF CHILD WELFARE IS ALWAYS GUIDED BY WHAT IS BEST FOR THE CHILD." CA: KID ILLNESS-trxONCAM

NEW DETAILS ARE COMING OUT TODAY ABOUT A MYSTERIOUS ILLNESS AFFECTING KIDS IN CALIFORNIA.

CHILDREN ARE SHOWING RARE POLIO-LIKE SYMPTOMS --

CECILIA VEGA REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

CA: KID ILLNESS-PKG

SCRIPT:

THIS MORNING, A MEDICAL MYSTERY is making headlines IN CALIFORNIA.

NEUROLOGISTS ARE INVESTIGATING AS MANY AS 25 CASES OF CHILDREN who show

SYMPTOMS OF A POLIO-LIKE syndrome -- an illness resurrecting IMAGES OF A

DISEASE THAT CRIPPLED AND PARALYZED TENS OF THOUSANDS IN THE 1950s.

Four-year-old SOFIA JARVIS IS ONE OF the FIVE CONFIRMED CASES of children

living with this illness. TWO YEARS AGO, HER PARENTS TOOK HER TO THE

HOSPITAL WHEN she STARTED WHEEZING. DOCTORS THOUGHT IT WAS ASTHMA.

BUT SOMETHING WASN'T RIGHT.

SOT MOM

She went to grab a toy and her hand stopped mid-way.

WITHIN DAYS, SOFIA WAS PARALYZED.

SOT DAD

Let's hope that this doesn't happen, or continue to happen. But if it were

that we can figure out what to do.

SOT DR.

So far no cases have we seen great recovery in any of the kids.

THE AVERAGE AGE of the affected children is 12 YEARS OLD. THEir SYMPTOMS

SET ON FAST-- WITHIN DAYS. SOME OF THE KIDS FIRST SHOWing SIGNS OF A

COMMON COLD.ALL of them ARE UNABLE TO MOVE SOME -- OR ALL -- OF THEIR

LIMBS. AND EACH OF THEM HAD THE POLIO VACCINE

DOCTORS DO NOT KNOW THE CAUSE, BUT THEY SAY THIS MAY MEAN A POLIO *LIKE*

VIRUS FOUND IN ASIA AND AUSTRALIA could NOW be HERE IN THE U-S.

THE CDC IS MONITORING the situation. AND while NEUROLOGISTS say PARALYSIS

IS EXTREMELY RARE, THEY WANT DOCTORS AND PARENTS TO BE ON THE LOOK OUT.

SOT DR

If you think you have a patient with sudden onset of weakness of one or more

limbs we recommend prompt evaluation with a medical and neurologic

specialist

TODAY, LIKE MOST FOUR YEAR OLDS, SOFIA LIKES PRINCESSES.

AND TWIRLING.

AND EVEN THOUGH SHE MAY NEVER GAIN FULL USE OF HER ARM.

NATS

SHE STILL MANGES TO PICK ON HER BIG BROTHERS JUST FINE. Return to index of stories...

BLUES PLAYER SOCHI DOGS-VO IN PLASMA

A STAR SAINT LOUIS BLUES PLAYER WHO WAS PART OF TEAM U-S-A IN THE OLYMPICS BROUGHT BACK MUCH MORE FROM SOCHI THAN JUST MEMORIES OF PLAYING ON OLYMPIC ICE.

AS CHRIS REGNIER REPORTS, HE HOPES THE DOGS WILL HELP TELL A STORY OF SURVIVAL. Return to index of stories...

BLUES PLAYER SOCHI DOGS-PKG

REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

YOU COULD SEE ONE OF THEM IN THE WINDOW RIGHT AFTER THE PLANE LANDED AT LAMBERT. THEN MOMENTS LATER, THE TWO DOGS RESCUED BY BLUES CAPTAIN DAVID BACKES AND HIS WIFE GOT OFF THE PLANE IN THEIR NEW COUNTRY. BACKES SAYS THESE TWO DOGS AND OTHERS KEPT ON SHOWING UP AT THE RESORT WHERE THE PLAYERS' FAMILIES WERE STAYING. AS THE DAYS WENT BY, SOCHI JUNIOR AND SOCHI JAKE, AS BACKES CALLS THEM, JUST WOULDN'T LEAVE. SO THE BACKESES WENT THROUGH A LOT OF RED TAPE TO GET THE DOGS OUT OF RUSSIA.

By the end of it, those two were living in hotel rooms where they shouldn't of been, getting baths in bathtubs where they shouldn't have been.

THE BACKESES ARE ANIMAL LOVERS. IN FACT THEY RUN A FOUNDATION CALLED ATHLETES FOR ANIMALS. BACKES SAYS ALL THE STRAY ANIMALS IN SOCHI AND THE AMOUNT THAT WERE REPORTEDLY KILLED OR EUTHANIZED, TOUCHED HIM.

When they're timid and you can tell they've been mistreated or you see one with mange or you see one that's really skinny or fighting over some scraps of food, that really tears your heart out because we feel every dog should have a home that's well fed.

THE DOGS STAYED WITH THE BACKESES ON THE 13 HOUR PLANE-RIDE HOME. HERE'S A PICTURE THEY TWEETED OUT WHILE ON THE FLIGHT.

It's almost like they knew they were going somewhere where they wouldn't have to worry about food or fighting over food or worried about how is coming after them next.

AFTER A QUICK POTTY BREAK, THE DOGS WERE TAKEN AWAY BY THE FIVE ACRES ANIMAL SHELTER FROM SAINT CHARLES. THEY WILL STAY THERE FOR 30 DAYS TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE HEALTHY BEFORE BECOMING AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION.

And so we're going to be caring for them in that time, socializing them, teaching them English, you know, fun things like that.

The story being told how these dogs are just like yours and mine at home and how we should treat our animals with respect and be responsible pet owners is a story that a lot of people wanted to tell and I think we're telling it now. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL
