5:02 FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

Today's Weather Story

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Warm again, with late week rain"

We kicked the new week off on a very warm note as daytime highs reached the lower to middle 80s in many spots with lots of humidity. Not much change will happen in the short term, but we are going to track increasing rain prospects by mid to late week along with a slight cool down.

The potential for patchy fog will exist this morning as winds are light and humidity remains high. Conditions, especially in those fog prone areas, could decline quickly with visibilities as low as 1/4 of a mile. Temperatures will be mild as they start in the middle to upper 60s. Once that fog lifts, we'll be treated to a mix of sun and clouds throughout the afternoon. Just like yesterday, the urban corridor is expected to stay mainly dry, while a few showers pop during the heat of the day across our interior zones. Daytime highs will range from 80° along the coast to the middle 80s elsewhere.

A few clouds will linger across the region tonight with the possibility of a patch or two of fog to develop. Temperatures will settle into the lower to middle 60s by tomorrow morning.

By midweek, we'll be tracking another weather system due in from the north and west. This will increase our clouds on Wednesday with widely scattered showers late in the evening through Thursday. Daytime highs will return to seasonal averages as they top out in the middle to upper 70s, while overnight lows dip into the middle upper 50s. Clouds will be slow to clear on Friday with more sunshine late in the day. The weekend is looking very nice with lots of sunshine with temperatures warming into the lower 80s, while humidity levels stay rather comfortable. Return to index of stories...

5:32 FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

PENNY SALES TAX-VO

A DEBATE OVER TAX INCREASE IS HEATING UP IN COLLIER COUNTY.

SOME WANT TOURISTS TO DIG DEEPER INTO THEIR POCKETS AND PAY MORE WHEN THEY VISIT NAPLES.

IT'S AN IDEA COUNTY COMMISSIONERS SHOT DOWN TIME AND TIME AGAIN - TO INCREASE THE BED TAX FOR TOURISTS.

THE TAX HAS BEEN AT FOUR PERCENT SINCE 2005 AND CHARGES VISITORS WHO STAY AT HOTELS OR RENT OUT VACATION SPOTS.

BUT MURRAY HENDEL WITH THE COLLIER CITIZENS COUNCIL SAYS A "PENNY" INCREASE TO FIVE PERCENT COULD RAISE AN ADDITIONAL THREE TO FOUR MILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR.

HE SAYS THAT MONEY COULD BE USED FOR ADVANCED BEACH RENOURISHMENT - SOMETHING THE COUNTY COULDN'T AFFORD IN 2013. Return to index of stories...

PENNY SALES TAX-SOTVO

"the people who are opposing the bed tax are the big hotels who claim they need a competitive advantage. The bed tax is for beach renourishment and related matters, it should not effect who makes money and who doesn't make money."

LOCAL HOTEL OWNERS SAY THE FOUR PERCENT NUMBER GIVES THEM A "COMPETITIVE EDGE" OVER OTHER AREAS LIKE MIAMI AND ORLANDO - ESPECIALLY WITH IT COMES TO CORPORATE GATHERINGS.

HENDEL AND HIS GROUP HOPE TO HAVE A FORMAL RECOMMENDATION READY FOR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS. Return to index of stories...
