LEHIGH SPRING PROJECT-trx VOTOPS, OC

A REVITALIZING SPRING WITH HISTORY DATING BACK THOUSANDS OF YEARS.

THAT'S THE GEM NEIGHBORS CLAIM IS HIDDEN IN THE MIDDLE OF LEHIGH ACRES.

NOW, THEY WANT THE COUNTY TO BUY IT AND PROTECT IT FROM DEVELOPMENT.

BUT AT WHAT COST?

NBC 2'S JOE ROETZ FINDS OUT. Return to index of stories...

LEHIGH SPRING PROJECT-BNR-PKG

PEACEFUL,

people thought it was just a lake.

PRISTINE,

people actually went fishing there.

THIS SCENE IS PERFECT IN THE EYES OF RICK AND RUTH ANGLICKIS

it's really a window into history.

A SINKHOLE, OFF JOEL BOULEVARD, BUT EVEN MORE OFF THE BEATEN PATH IN LEHIGH ACRES.

ONE THAT'S FILLED WITH WATER OVER THE YEARS.

BUT WHERE SOME SEE THIS A SMALL LAKE - THIS PAIR SEES A LOT MORE.

there's great archaelogical value in that spring, just like one in Sarasota

THE ANGLICKIS' WANTS LEE COUNTY TO BUY THIS 19 ACRE PIECE OF PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE OWNER AND PRESERVE IT FROM DEVELOPMENT.

THEY SAY THE LEHIGH SPRING HERE HAS DEEP ROOTS -

DATING BACK 14-THOUSAND YEARS, AND MORE THAN 200 FEET DOWN.

BUT THE COUNTY IS BALKING AT PRICE.

If the county bout this at the asking price of 1 point 3 million dollars- the costs don't end there.

It'd be another half a million to restore it, then 42 thousand a year for upkeep.

SUPPORTERS SAY IT'D BE A GREAT PLACE TO BUILD A PARK -

MAYBE A MUSEUM WITH ARTIFACTS FOUND BELOW.

I think it is a great idea to turn it into a park, but 1.3 million sounds overboard.

doesn't make sense to me. We've got a lot of better things to spend money on.

WHILE THE ANGLICKIS SEE IT DIFFERENTLY.

I think it's priceless.

COUNTY COMMISSIONERS WILL HAVE THE FINAL SAY WHEN THEY TAKE IT UP NEXT TUESDAY.

IN LEHIGH ACRES, JOE ROETZ, NBC 2. Return to index of stories...

MEN IN THEIR 40S ARE MORE LIKELY TO FATHER BABIES WHO LATER HAVE AUTISM, ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER AND SUICIDAL BEHAVIOR -- AMONG OTHER PSYCHIATRIC PROBLEMS.

DOCTORS AT INDIANA UNIVERSITY ANALYZED DATA ON EVERYONE BORN IN SWEDEN BETWEEN 1973 AND 2001 -- ROUGHLY TWO AND A HALF MILLION PEOPLE.

EXPERTS SUSPECT THAT AS MEN AGE, THEY'RE EXPOSED TO MORE ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS -- WHICH MIGHT LEAD TO D-N-A MUTATIONS IN THEIR SPERM.

THE RESEARCHERS FOUND KIDS BORN TO FATHERS IN THEIR 40S WERE 3 AND A HALF TIMES MORE LIKELY TO DEVELOP AUTISM THAN THEIR PEERS WITH YOUNGER DADS --

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

CLOUDS AND SHOWERS ON THE WAY

A few days of changing weather is on the radar before we return to very nice weather this coming weekend.

Skies will be mostly cloudy tonight and First Alert Doppler Radar is tracking showers near Tampa moving in this direction. If the showers hold together we should see some areas of rain break out tonight. Temperatures will drop into the 60's this evening and skies will be mostly cloudy. Winds will die off a bit; however our breeze will continue at 10 - 15 mph through tomorrow.

The forecast for Thursday calls for more cloudy and breezy weather. The high temperature tomorrow will be in the mid 70's. Scattered showers will pop up across the area on Thursday with a chance for rain in the morning, afternoon and early evening. It does not appear that a good soaking if coming, but a little rain will be welcome.

By Friday the skies will start to clear out and on Saturday and Sunday the forecast looks mostly sunny with highs back in the 80's. Return to index of stories...

A FAILED CAMPGROUND.

MOS

15:23:18-:22

It's been a problem for a long time so somebody needs to check it out.

AND AN ILLEGALY OPERATING DRAG STRIP AND GO CART TRACK.

MOS

15:23:15-:17

I think that's not good.

THOSE BLUNDERS AT THE IMMOKALEE AIRPORT COULD COST TAXPAYERS BIG TIME.

Tom Kelly, Naples resident

15:25:12

It's a pretty high figure.

TO HELP PAY FOR THE PROJECTS THE COUNTY SECURED MORE THAN 1.5 MILLION DOLLARS IN GRANTS.

BUT NEW COUNTY AUDITS SHOW MISTAKES AND MISMANAGED MONEY.

COUNTY COMMISSIONER GEORGIA HILLER

15:51:30

Very clearly this is not acceptable.

ACCORDING TO SENIOR INTERNAL AUDITOR MEGAN GAILLARD, AIRPORT AUTHORITY OFFICIALS ABRUPTLY DISMANTLED THE CAMPGROUND IN 2005.

THAT'S LESS THAN A YEAR AFTER CREWS COMPLETED IT.

SHE TELLS US THE GRANTORS COULD COME BACK AT THE COUNTY FOR ABOUT 1.3 MILLION DOLLARS.

GAILLARD

14:42:40-:44

The grantor requirements for the campground were to maintain the asset for 20 years.

THAT AUDIT ALSO SHOWS MORE THAN A DECADE AGO THE AIRPORT AUTHORITY SECURED ANOTHER 250 THOUSAND DOLLARS IN GRANT MONEY.

GAILLARD SAYS THE COMPANY THAT NEEDED IT FAILED TO LIVE UP TO ITS OBLIGATIONS.

GAILLARD

14:45:30-:36

when you don't finish something as you're supposed to the grantor has the option to come back for the full amount of the grant.

GAILLARD TELLS US AROUND THAT SAME TIME, THE IMMOKALEE REGIONAL RACEWAY ILLEGALLY SUBLEASED ITS PROPERTY AT THE AIRPORT FOR THIS.

A GO CART TRACK SHE SAYS HAD NO INSURANCE.

GAILLARD

14:44:56-:06

A kid gets hurt on a go cart on the go car track, would the county have been held liable?

Highly possible.

COUNTY OFFICIALS SAY THEY SHUT THAT TRACK DOWN.

THEY TELL US THEY'RE NOW WORKING TO FIX THE GRANTS DEBACLE.

TAXPAYERS SAY THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE SUFFER.
