HE CAME TO CONGRESS TO SHARE IT. TO PLEAD HIS CASE FOR MORE RESEARCH.

BUT WHEN COMEDIAN AND ACTOR SETH ROGAN FOUND HIMSELF BEFORE A LARGELY ABSENT SENATE SUBCOMMITTEE, HE DECIDED TO LET THE WORLD KNOW ABOUT IT.

NBC'S PETER ALEXANDER TAKES US THERE. Return to index of stories...

SETH ROGEN ON ALZHEIMER'S-PKG

Every day, there are a LOT of boring hearings on Capital Hill.

. but when a celebrity, like actor Seth Rogen -- the star of comedies like "40-Year-Old Virgin" and "Knocked Up" comes to town -- it's pretty much a sure thing there will be plenty of people watching.

ROGEN" "I don't know if you know who I am. You told me you never saw 'Knocked up, Chairman,' it's a little insulting."

HARKIN: "I will wager this is the first the time in any congressional hearing in history that the words knocked up have been used."

ROGEN: "Oy, you're not going to like the rest of this then."

All that extra attention can focus lawmakers on serious issues like Alzheimer's disease -- that has left Rogen's own mother-in-law unable to care for herself.

"After forgetting who she and her loved ones were, my mother in law, a teacher for 35 years, then forgot how to speak, feed herself, dress herself, and go the bathroom herself. All by the age of 60."

But, Rogen -- who's sold out theaters for years -- ended up talking to a tiny audience -- with only TWO of 18 subcommittee members sticking around to listen.

Rogen made sure that didn't go unnoticed.

"All those empty seats are senators who are not prioritizing Alzheimer's," he tweeted afterward.

And, when Illinois senator Mark Kirk tweeted this picture of the two together earlier and a note reading: "Thanks to @SethRogen for speaking out".

. Rogen shot back: ".@SenatorKirk pleasure meeting you. Why did you leave before my speech?"

Kirk said had another meeting, but later watched Rogen's testimony.

"It's indicative of a mentality that we find so frustrating."

On MSNBC's "Hardball," Rogen -- who launched his own Alzheimer's awareness fund, "Hilarity for Charity" -- took the missing senators to task.

"It seems like these people don`t care. That`s the direct message they are giving by leaving during the testimony is that they don`t care. Two of them were falling

asleep during the first part of the testimony, literally. I saw it happening."

A funny man driving home a serious message -- even if Washington wasn't listening.

WEATHER-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

BETTER WEATHER AHEAD

Clouds and cooler air filtered into Southwest Florida Thursday, with highs only in the low 70s. Rain showers are developing in the Gulf of Mexico, and these showers will push into the area through the evening time frame. The showers should slowly diminish overnight, with lows in the mid 50s.

More sunshine is on the way for Friday. We'll see partly cloudy skies through the daytime hours, with highs in the mid 70s. Overnight lows will again be cool, with temps in the mid 50s.

The weekend still looks great across the area. Expect plenty of sunshine both days with low humidity values. Highs on Saturday will be in the low 80s, with temps on Sunday in the low to mid 80s.

The nice weather continues into next week. A few more clouds will appear starting Monday, with highs in the mid 80s. Dry weather continues into Tuesday, with temps in the low 80s.

Our next storm system will likely arrive midweek, which will bring a good chance of showers and possibly storms to the area. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-ON CAM

IT COULD BE A HARD TACKLE IN FOOTBALL, A FALL FROM A CHEERLEADING PYRAMID OR A THROW FROM A HORSE.

THESE ACTIVE INJURIES HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO DO REAL, PERMANENT DAMAGE.

WE HEAR A LOT ABOUT HEAD INJURIES, BUT MUCH LESS ABOUT NECK AND SPINE TRAUMAS.

PKG:

WITH SO MUCH FOCUS ON SPORT'S CONCUSSIONS, ANOTHER ATHLETIC

INJURY IS STRIKING LESS OF A CHORD: DAMAGE TO THE UPPER, OR

CERVICAL SPINE.

DR. DEAN LIN/NEUROSURGEON

RUNS:

:32: We probably see more cervical spinal cord here than anything.

NEUROSURGEON DEAN LIN FINDS SPINAL CORD INJURIES AMONG THE MOST

CATASTROPHIC. WHILE PLAYERS GENERALLY RECOVER FROM INJURIES LIKE

A BROKEN BONE, CERVICAL SPINE INJURIES INVOLVE COLLISIONS OF THE

HEAD AND NECK AND CAN CAUSE A LIFETIME OF DAMAGE.

DR. DEAN LIN/NEUROSURGEON

RUNS:

1:38: The problem with spinal cord is you have a very densely packed structure, about a cm in

diameter, where a lot of nerves travel. Anything that damages that amount of tissue can result in

a catastrophic injury.

SPORTS INJURIES MAKE UP ABOUT 12% OF CASES- ESPECIALLY ONES

INVOLVING PEOPLE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 15 AND 35. IF IT HAPPENS IN THE

FIELD OF PLAY- THE WRONG MOVE COULD RESULT IN PARALYSIS.

DR. DEAN LIN/NEUROSURGEON

RUNS:

12:15 Anytime we all see football injuries, hockey injuries on the field, the first thing they

do is clear the field no one moves the patient. They put a collar around their neck before

they let them do anything at all.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

In best scenarios, the spinal cord injury is considered 'incomplete' as opposed to totally

severed- which means there is no chance of function. The partial injury often involves

nerve compression swelling. So with treatment, it takes time- often a long time to gauge

the amount of recovery.

DR. DEAN LIN/NEUROSURGEON

RUNS:

10:42 The problem with nerve tissue like spinal cord and brain- that heals very, very slowly. And

that's why I tell people we won't know for possibly up to a year how much better you're going

to get.

THESE INJURIES, WHILE SMALL IN NUMBER NATIONWIDE ARE ON THE RISE.

LEADING TO THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING HEAD'S UP ABOUT THE RISKS. FOR
