--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

THE UKRAINIAN MILITARY IS ON ITS HIGHEST ALERT AS RUSSIAN FORCES SURROUND THREE MILITARY BASES IN THE STRATEGIC CRIMEAN PENINSULA-- PROMPTING FEARS AN ARMED CONFLICT COULD BREAK OUT AT ANY MOMENT.

THIS VIDEO SHOWS A UKRAINIAN COAST GUARD BASE IN CRIMEA. UNIFORMED GUNMEN CAN BE SEEN-- BUT, WITH NO IDENTIFIABLE INSIGNIA, WHO THEY ARE OR WHERE THEY ARE FROM IS STILL UNCLEAR.

THE MAJORITY OF CRIMEANS ARE ETHNIC RUSSIAN AND MOSCOW KEEPS A NAVAL BASE THERE. WHILE MANY there ARE WELCOMING THE RUSSIANS-- UKRAINE'S INTERIM PRIME MINISTER HAS ANOTHER MESSAGE FOR MOSCOW.

this is actually the declaration of war to my country and we urge president putin to pull back his military.

BUT RUSSIA SAYS THEY ARE ONLY TRYING TO PROTECT THEIR INTERESTS IN THE REGION. THIS HAS MANY WESTERN NATIONS ON EDGE.

SPEAKING ON N-B-C'S MEET THE PRESS-- SECRETARY OF STATE JOHN KERRY CALLED IT "AN INCREDIBLE ACTION OF AGGRESSION" AND THREATENED VERY SERIOUS ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES.

he is not going to have a Sochi G8, he may not even remain in the G8 if this continues. He may find himself with asset freezes on Russian business.

ECONOMIC PRESSURE MAY NOT BE ENOUGH. UKRAINE'S AMBASSADOR TO THE U-N SAYS HIS COUNTRY NEEDS MORE THAN DIPLOMATIC ASSISTANCE. HE WANTS MILITARY SUPPORT-- BUT NATO DOSEN'T SUPPORT THAT.

we urge both parties to immediately seek a peaceful resolution through dialogue.

SO FAR-- CANADA HAS RECALLED ITS AMBASSADOR TO MOSCOW AND THE UNITED STATES AND GREAT BRITAIN SAY THEY ARE SUSPENDING PARTICIPATION IN MEETINGS AHEAD OF THE UPCOMING G8 SUMMIT.

I'M APRIL WILLIAMS REPORTING. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST OPEN

NEW! Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

Sunday followed in Saturday's footsteps, delivering wall to wall sunshine, comfortable humidity, and temperatures soaring into the 80s.

The evening and overnight will play out nicely for us, too. Temperatures will stay quite pleasant as lows reach the low to mid 60s near the beaches and 50s deeper inland.

The only speed bump in the forecast tonight is the potential for some dense fog by early Monday morning, especially for our inland communities.

The fog won't last long, though. By the mid morning hours Monday, we'll be in store for tons of sun along with some pretty warm temperatures by the afternoon. Much of the area will see highs in the mid 80s, except along the coast where temperatures will peak in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees.

Rain chances will be absent from the forecast tomorrow and Tuesday, but we are tracking a good chance for rain and even some stronger thunderstorms by Thursday as low pressure intensifies over the Gulf and moves across the peninsula Thursday night into Friday.

A lot can change as this system starts to take shape later in the week, so we'll need to keep monitoring the possibility for some strong thunderstorms as we go through the next few days.

Once the storms exit early Friday, cooler and sunnier weather takes over just in time for the weekend, so we should be in great shape for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Saturday morning!

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...
