FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Tranquil weather continues"

It was a beautiful weekend across Southwest Florida, with cool mornings and warm afternoons. A quiet weather pattern will remain in place over the next few days, before another storm system enhances the rainfall potential by late in the week.

We dealt with very little fog this morning and now mostly sunny conditions will be in command of our skies through the afternoon. It will also be another unseasonably warm day with temperatures climbing into the lower to middle 80s away from the coast. A late day gulf breeze will keep our beaches a few degrees cooler in the upper 70s to 80°.

With high humidity tonight and temperatures expected to settle into the lower half of the 60s, we'll more than likely see a few areas of patchy fog by early tomorrow morning.

High pressure will continue to migrate east Tuesday and Wednesday. As a result, our days will stay warm with highs in the middle 80s. Our wind flow will begin to turn more southerly, allowing more moisture to move in across the peninsula keeping overnight temperatures in the middle 60s. A mainly dry weather pattern will stay in place through Wednesday, with showers and storms being a good bet by Thursday as another storm system moves across the northern gulf coast region. Once the rain exits by early Friday, expect clearing skies and a slight cool down heading into next weekend with comfortable humidity values. Return to index of stories...

"Shhhh"

FROM THE DAY BABIES ARE BORN. PARENTS SHUSH AND SING AND ROCK AND PRETTY MUCH DO WHATEVER THEY CAN TO GET THEIR KIDS TO SLEEP.

DESPITE GOOD EFFORTS -- A NEW POLL FINDS -- IT'S NOT ENOUGH.

"If you compare what the parents are saying their child gets on average on school nights to what the recommendations are, it is off by about an hour."

THE NATIONAL SLEEP FOUNDATION HAS RELEASED ITS ANNUAL "SLEEP IN AMERICA" POLL OF ABOUT A THOUSAND PARENTS. THE BIGGEST SLEEP DETERRENTS FOR KIDS ARE ELECTRONICS IN THEIR BEDROOMS.

THREE-QUARTERS OF ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL KIDS HAVE AT LEAST ONE GADGET GLOWING IN WHAT SHOULD BE A DARK ROOM.

THE PERCENTAGE JUMPS TO 90-PERCENT OF TEENS.

"Noise will disturb your sleep especially if it's left on. And also these really -- the more interactive devices, like video games or their tablets are mentally stimulating."

THE GADGETS ARE HERE TO STAY. AS IS THE NEED FOR SLEEP. EXPERTS SAY THE WAY TO KEEP BOTH IN HARMONY IS TO TURN TO ANOTHER TIME-HONORED TRADITION: GOOD, SOLID PARENTING.

"We did find that parents who always enforce rules about how late their child can use these devices do have children that sleep more than parents who don't have these rules or don't enforce them regularly."

PARENTS MAY ALSO WANT TO POWER DOWN TO GET A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP.

THE POLL FOUND 1 IN 4 PARENTS ADMITTED TO TEXTING OR EMAILING AFTER GOING TO BED AT LEAST ONCE IN THE PAST WEEK.

PISTORIUS TRIAL-trxONCAM

THE TRIAL OF OSCAR PISTORIUS -- THE PARALYMPIC CHAMP KNOWN AS THE BLADE RUNNER -- IS FACING CHARGES IN SOUTH AFRICA FOR KILLING HIS GIRLFRIEND REEVA STEENKAMP.

IT HAS BECOME THE TRIAL OF THE CENTURY IN THAT

COUNTRY -- WITH CAMERAS IN THE COURTROOM.

HAMISH MACDONALD HAS THE LATEST FROM PRETORIA. Return to index of stories...

PISTORIUS TRIAL-PKG

SCRIPT:

Facing the cameras, on his journey to facing justice.

NATS: "open up open up open up"

OSCAR PISTORIUS, The man known as 'Blade-Runner' is guided into court past

the family of the woman he killed.

Reeva Steenkamp's mother REPORTEDLY says she wants to "look him in the eye"

and "see the truth"

but this morning there is no eye contact.

PISTORIUS faces four charges and a possible life sentence.

JUDGE "How do you plea"

OCSAR "not guilty"

His fate is in the hands of this judge, who has the job of ignoring the

frenzy.

SOT: George Mazarakis, Carte Blanche Television

03.49 "This is probably the biggest trial of the century. Certainly so far

it is."

The defence claims it was tragic mistake - PISTORIUS thought Steenkamp was

an intruder in the home - he acted in self-defence.

But prosecutors allege it was deliberate, THAT he opened fire during an

argument in the early hours of Valentine's day last year.

In part this trial will be a character test. The prosecution will claim

PISTORIUS was reckless and gun happy.

New images show Pistorius on a gun range shooting the pistol that killed

Steenkamp.

But there is evidence too, just 10 days before the killing, of a flirtatious

and loving couple.

SOT: George Mazarakis, Carte Blanche Television

09.38 "We're looking at a double tragedy really. Because no matter what

happens, his life is never going to be the same again."

The trial is scheduled to last 3 weeks, but with more than a hundred

WITNESSES POTENTIALLY taking the stand, it could last much longer. Return to index of stories...

BUT MARKETING PROFESSOR ALINE CHRISTIANSEN SAYS IT'S BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS. FROM OLD FASHION MAILING LISTS TO SOPHISTICATED COMPUTER DATA BASES.

"demographic information, like age, education, type of work, type of job, type of product somebody buys."

BUT NOW PRIVACY EXPERTS SAY THERE ARE CONCERNS THAT DATA BROKERS ARE GETTING EVEN MORE PERSONAL, BUY COLLECTING OUR INFORMATION FROM SOCIAL MEDIA.

"they want to know what you do day to day and kind of what strikes your fancy. and you're providing that information to them every time you post something."

"and it's not just lists of people who make lots of money, people with financial problems are also very popular."

"when you have an extremely high interest rate and you've missed a couple payments, they make a lot of money on those high interest rates. so again, it comes down to dollars."

"because there are financial companies who want to market their services and products, so it's for all levels." Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

WHEN SOMEONE SUFFERS A SUDDEN DEATH FROM HEART ATTACK - IT IS OFTEN DUE TO WHAT IS COMMONLY CALLED, THE 'WIDOW MAKER' - A PARTICULARLY DEVASTATING LOCATION FOR A BLOCKAGE.

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

PKG:

THE NAME ITSELF SOUNDS FRIGHTENING: THE WIDOW MAKER. IN TERMS OF A

CARDIAC EVENT- IT IS NAMED FOR GOOD REASON.

DR. MURALI MUPPALA/CARDIOLGIST

RUNS:

1:09 When this happens, most of the people die unless you open those blockages

pretty quickly.

IT'S CAUSED BY A SUDDEN BLOCKAGE OF THE LEFT ANTERIOR DESCENDING

ARTERY- WHICH GIVES CIRCULATION TO ABOUT TWO-THIRDS OF YOUR

HEART.

DR. MURALI MUPPALA/CARDIOLGIST

RUNS:

:26 When it is completely shut off, there is no oxygen going to the heart muscle. 1:46 If

you don't get treatment immediately it's possible you could die before you realize you

were having a heart attack.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

By some estimates the survival rate is between 5 and 10%. Because this heart attack

comes on quickly with little or no warning- the best way to cheat on the widow maker is

to know your risks.

DR. MURALI MUPPALA/CARDIOLGIST

RUNS:

5:23 It's very important for all of us to realize whether we have strong family history. If

you know that someone in your family has a heart attack your chance of having heart

attack is definitely higher.

PEOPLE WITH A STRONG FAMILY HISTORY SHOULD BE CAUTIOUS,

ESPECIALLY IF THEY HAVE OTHER HEALTH CONDITIONS WHICH IMPACT

HEART DISEASE. INCLUDING HYPERTENSION, HIGH CHOLESTEROL AND

DIABETES.

DR. MURALI MUPPALA/CARDIOLGIST

RUNS:

5:40 You need to make sure you talk to your doctor, make sure you are getting proper

treatment for those things. The other things you could do on individual level: physical

activity, exercise four to five times a week, make sure your eating right, make sure your

not smoking and make sure you lead healthy, active lifestyle.

BY SHOWING YOUR HEART SOME LOVE- MONITORING YOUR HEALTH UNDER

A DOCTOR'S SUPERVISION- YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO KEEP THE WIDOW-

MAKER AWAY. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...
