BREAKING NEWS IN NORTH NAPLES --

TRAFFIC IS SLOW GOING ON I-75 -- JUST NORTH OF THE IMMOKALEE ROAD EXIT.

WE WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE TRAFFIC SITUATION LIVE. AND LET YOU KNOW WHEN THE RAOD CLEARS. Return to index of stories...

ALLIGATOR ALLEY FIRE SUBSTATION-VOTOPS, SS, 2 SHOT

A TRAILER HAULING CARS CAUGHT FIRE AND TURNED INTERSTATE 75 IN COLLIER COUNTY INTO A VIRTUAL PARKING LOT.

IT TOOK FIREFIGHTERS 25 MINUTES TO ARRIVE.

TONIGHT - FIREFIGHTERS SAY A NEW FIRE STATION ALONG THE ALLEY WOULD CUT THEIR RESPONSE TIME IN HALF. AND COULD HAVE CHANGED TODAY'S OUTCOME.

NBC-2'S RICK RITTER DISCOVERS WHEN THE STATION WILL BE READY TO GO. Return to index of stories...

ALLIGATOR ALLEY FIRE SUBSTATION-BNR-PKG

THICK, BLACK SMOKE SPREAD RAPIDLY ACROSS ALLIGATOR ALLEY - AND COULD BE SPOTTED MILES AWAY.

Sean Whelen /Naples/10:10:17 "saw the smoke for about 10 miles, saw the trooper flip around, kind of figured we were in for a long morning."

TOO LONG FOR DRIVERS HEADING EASTBOUND - WHO WERE AT A STANDSTILL FOR NEARLY TWO HOURS.

THE FIRE STARTED AROUND 10:00 NEAR MILE MARKER 77 - TROOPERS SAY THE REAR TIRE ON A CAR CARRIER BLEW - RUPTURING ITS HYDRAULIC LINE.

Martin Wolt/Fort Myers/10:13:18 "The smoke was jet black and way high, it looked like a bomb went off and every now and then you heard a "boom" and that was the tire blowing up."

Rick Ritter/10:27:29 "The Chief says it took them roughly 25 minutes to get from Everglades City to the scene and once they got here, this is what was left of the car trailer - every vehicle completely destroyed. He says having the new fire station would shorten their response times significantly."

District Chief Caleb Morris/Ochopee/10:24:33 "Our response time would be less than half it's the key to everything."

ESPECIALLY SAVING LIVES.

THE NEW STATION BEING BUILT AT MILE MARKER 63 WILL HOUSE SEVERAL EMERGENCY AND FIREFIGHTER VEHICLES FOR THE OCHOPEE DISTRICT.

A TEN-MILLION-DOLLAR STATE FUNDED PROJECT - OCHOPPE CHIEF CALEB MORRIS DESCRIBES IT AS A COMPLETE "GAME CHANGER."

ONE THAT'S EXPECTED TO BE FINISHED IN JULY.

District Chief Caleb Morris/Ochopee/10:25:14 "If it can save one life, it's worth every penny of it."

Sean Whelen/10:14:42 "Absolutely, especially now with intense traffic and usually some horrible accidents."

LUCKILY, NO ONE WAS INJURED TUESDAY MORNING.

BUT FIREFIGHTERS SAY A QUICKER RESPONSE TIME -

COULD HAVE SPARKED A DIFFERENT OUTCOME.

District Chief Caleb Morris/10:24:40 "Possibly would've saved the cargo here, if not all of it, most of it."

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

SHOWERS BY THURSDAY

The forecast tonight still calls for quiet weather. Skies will be mostly clear this evening with temperatures dropping down to the lower 60's along the coast and mid 50's inland. There will likely be more fog developing overnight and lasting for a few hours again tomorrow morning.

After the fog burns off, skies will be partly cloudy during the day with an increase in clouds by evening. On Thursday we will track a cold front moving in from the Gulf of Mexico. Skies will be mostly cloudy on Thursday and showers/thunderstorms will be developing during the day. A few of the storms could be accompanied with heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds.

The weather on Thursday should be followed by clearing skies on Friday and a very nice weekend. It looks like our temperatures will dip, briefly, into the 70's on Friday but rebound to the 80's by Saturday and Sunday. Mostly sunny skies are expected through the weekend.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
