Was it a routine missile test or blatant show of force? That is the question

many in the international community are asking this morning after Russia's

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Increasing rain chances"

After several days of nothing but sunshine and warm weather, changes are just around the corner as we track a developing storm system in the Gulf of Mexico. This will enhance our rainfall potential as we head into the Thursday time frame.

Mostly sunny skies will prevail through the mid day hours, with more clouds developing through the afternoon. Daytime highs will stay nice and warm as they max out in the lower to middle 80s. Right at the coast, expect temperatures a few degrees cooler in the upper 70s. While most of us end up dry, we have about a 30% chance for a few isolated showers. With an onshore wind today, any rain that develops will aim toward areas east of the interstate and out by Lake Okeechobee.

Tonight, clouds will increase and temperatures will lower into the middle 60s.

As an area of low pressure evolves and tracks east across the northern gulf, our skies will become mostly cloudy tomorrow with the threat for scattered showers and a few stronger storms. Despite the rain, temperatures will manage to climb into the upper 70s to 80°, however once the rain ends from west to east overnight, cooler and drier weather will move in across Southwest Florida. Clouds will linger through the early morning hours on Friday with more sunshine breaking out during the day. By Saturday morning, we're looking at temperatures in the upper 40s to lower 50s. The weekend looks fantastic with lots of sunshine, comfortable humidity, and highs near 80°. Return to index of stories...

CLOTHING RESALE-ON CAM

WE ALL HAVE THEM. CLOTHES IN OUR CLOSETS THAT DON'T FIT. THAT WE DON'T LIKE OR THAT WE HAVEN'T WORN IN YEARS.

CLOTHING RESALE-PKG

FOR LENA 'CHY-KUH AND HER DAUGHTER CHRISTY. THIS. IS SOMETHING NEW.

"We had a bunch of brand name clothing and usually you just give it away."

BUT INSTEAD. SHE BROUGHT THEM TO THIS RE-SALE STORE. OFFERING CASH. FOR CLOTHES.

"You can get fifty dollars"

IT'S WHY ROSEMARY SADOWSKI CAME. WITH ABOUT TEN PIECES OF USED CLOTHING.

"and they took six of the ten" "twenty-seven dollars and something"

PLATO'S CLOSET IS A GROUP OF FRANCHISE STORES ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

THEY'RE VERY PARTICULAR ABOUT WHAT THEY ACCEPT.

"we pass on anything that is dirty or wrinkled even."

MATTHEW SAYS PLATO'S CLOSET SPECIALIZES IN RE-SELLING CASUAL CLOTHES FOR TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS.

THEY ALSO HAVE USED ACCESSORIES LIKE HANDBAGS. SHOES. BELTS AND SCARVES.

"we sell things for about fifty to seventy percent off of retail pricing."

.LIKE THIS PAIR OF JOE'S JEANS-- FOR TWENTY BUCKS.

ROSEMARY LIKES HUNTING FOR DESIGNER DUDS FOR HER THREE GROWING KIDS.

"The first day that it opened, i bought one hundred dollars worth of stuff for them, because there's really good prices and really good names"

"I like how it's nice clothes at a reasonable price"

"there was definitely a need for a store like this in long island and you could tell right when we opened the doors. people were rushing in. and it's been pretty consistently busy since we opened."

THE STORE PAYS OUT ABOUT THIRTY PERCENT OF WHAT THEY'D CHARGE FOR AN ITEM.

SO, FOR EXAMPLE. THE SELLER OF THOSE JOE'S JEANS PROBABLY GOT ABOUT SIX BUCKS.

THESE CUSTOMERS TOLD US THE STORE'S CONCEPT. WORKS FOR THEM.

"The quality is great, they don't seem to take anything that's marked or not in really great condition, so its working for us, it's great." Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

NASA AND RUSSIA-trxVO IN TC

-HERE'S A NEW ANGLE ON THE CRISIS IN THE UKRAINE.

NASA WANTS THE U.S. GOVERNMENT TO STOP WORKING WITH RUSSIA FOR SPACE LAUNCHES.

TENSIONS ARE HIGH BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

IT MAKES FOR AN AWKWARD RELATIONSHIP FOR NASA.

DAN BILLOW EXPLAINS WHAT'S AT STAKE. Return to index of stories...

NASA AND RUSSIA-PKG

A U-S ASTRONAUT IS IN THE FINAL STAGES OF TRAINING FOR HIS MARCH 25TH LAUNCH ON A RUSSIAN ROCKET, EVEN AS TENSIONS BETWEEN THE US AND RUSSIA REACH THEIR HIGHEST LEVELS IN YEARS.

THE RUSSIAN SOYUZ IS THE ONLY WAY FOR US ASTRONAUTS TO GET INTO SPACE, AND NASA ADMINISTRATOR CHARLIE BOLDEN, SPEAKING BY PHONE FROM WASHINGTON, SAYS THAT DEPENDENCE SHOULD END.

S/ Voice of: Charlie Bolden/ NASA Administrator:23 -:31

"The choice here is between fully funding the request to bring more space launches back to the US or continuing millions in subsidies to the Russians."

SHOULD THE CONFRONTATION OVER UKRAINE GET EVEN MORE UGLY, RUSSIA COULD EASILY PUT AN END TO US MANNED SPACEFLIGHT.

ON THE SPACE STATION NOW, TWO US ASTRONAUTS ARE DEPENDENT ON RUSSIA FOR A RIDE HOME.

SHOULD RUSSIA REFUSE TO CARRY US ASTRONAUTS, NASA COULD RETALIATE ONLY BY TURNING OFF ELECTRICITY AND COOLING TO MOST OF THE STATION.

RUSSIAN-BUILT PARTS OF THE STATION WOULD STILL BE LIVABLE.

BUT NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT THESE EXTREME MEASURES NOW.

WHAT NASA IS DOING IS PUTTING THE LARGEST NUMBER OF DOLLARS EVER INTO HELPING US COMPANIES DEVELOP NEW SPACESHIPS - A PLAN JUST ANNOUNCED TODAY, BUT PREVIOUSLY BUDGETED. THESE SHIPS, SUCH AS THE SPACEX DRAGON SHIP, COULD RETURN ASTRONAUT LAUNCHES TO THE CAPE BY 2017.

S/ Voice of: Charlie Bolden/ NASA Administrator

"At long last, this will end our reliance on the Russians to get to space, and free us up to carry out even more ambitious missions beyond low earth orbit." Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-ON CAM

LATE STAGE CANCERS VERY OFTEN INVOLVE THE BRAIN- NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH BRAIN CANCER.

THESE ARE A RESULT OF THE CANCER SPREADING.

WHY THE BRAIN? AMY OSHIER EXPLAINS IN OUR HEALTH MATTERS REPORT. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

PKG:

A FEATURE OF ADVANCED CANCER IS IT'S MOVEMENT TO OTHER PARTS OF

THE BODY. CALLED METASTATIC OR STAGE 4 CANCER, DIFFERENT FORMS OF

DISEASE TEND TO MIGRATE TO CERTAIN PLACES.

DR. CONSTANTINE MANTZ/RADIATION ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

1:34: And one of the favorite organs of the body where cancers can spread to is the

brain.

WHEN A BRAIN TUMOR IS DISCOVERED, THE FIRST THING DOCTORS DO IS

DETERMINE IT'S ORIGIN. WHETHER IT STARTED IN THE BRAIN, AS BRAIN

CANCER. OR CAME FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE.

DR. CONSTANTINE MANTZ/RADIATION ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

2:37 For example, we order an MRI on a patient ,we see that there's not just one tumor

but there's a number of them and they're scattered throughout the brain that typically

represents a metastatic cancer. That's one that has seeded the brain in a number of

areas within it from some source outside of the brain.

WHY THE BRAIN? IT HAS TO DO WITH OUR PLUMBING.

DR. CONSTANTINE MANTZ/RADIATION ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

6:14 The brain consumes about 25% of all the oxygen that our body takes in and in

order to consume that much oxygen to do all of its functioning and work its needs to

have a pretty healthy blood supply. And in part it's because that really dense blood

supply that it's a favorite place for metastasis.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

About a quarter of all cancers that spread through the body will go to the brain.

Metastatic brain tumors are more common than tumors that actually start in the brain.

Some of the most common forms are breast cancer, lung cancer, melanoma and kidney

cancer.

TREATING IT CAN INVOLVE SURGERY AND RADIATION. ADVANCED RADIATION

TECHNIQUES ARE HELPING PATIENTS BY DELIVERING PRECISE, HIGH DOSE

RADIATION TO HARD TO REACH TUMORS.

DR. CONSTANTINE MANTZ/RADIATION ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

9:23 We will use specifically this Stereotactic Radiotherapy to treat challenging, difficult

tumors in the brain, tumors that otherwise wrap themselves around critical structures

that we want to avoid. Whereas in the recent years past we just could not offer a

effective or safe treatment for them.

AS MORE IN KNOWN ABOUT CANCERS AND HOW THEY BEHAVE, DOCTORS

CAN FIND BETTER WAYS TO TREAT IT OR DETECT IT IT'S EARLIEST STAGE.

FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

TAMPA KIDNAP UPDATE-PKG

SCRIPT:

HE appears FIDGETY AND WIDE-EYED IN COURT, BUT THIS MORNING, PROSECUTORS say

they NOW BELIEVE JOSHUA HAKKEN MAY BE FAKING claims of INSANITY TO AVOID

PRISON.

A SUDDEN ABOUT-FACE AFTER those same PROSECUTORS AGREED with DOCTORS IN

JANUARY that Hakken WASN'T FIT TO STAND TRIAL.

SOT Prosecutors

But since the depositions and since the last court date the state has been

made aware of information.

PROSECUTORS TELLING A JUDGE THEY now may HAVE PROOF Hakken's RECORDED JAIL

HOUSE communications, which could include references to faking mental

illness.

JOSHUA HAKKEN AND HIS WIFE SHARON are charged with kidnapping THEIR TWO

LITTLE BOYS last April after legal troubles caused them to lose custody.

After swiping them from their grandparents, the family was CAUGHT ON CAMERA

BOARDING A BOAT IN TAMPA.

SOT 911 CALL

Grandmother: Yes my son-in-law kidnapped my two grandchildren. They're under

the state custody. He's not supposed to be near them. He tied me up.

THEY THEN SET SAIL FOR HAVANA, CUBA, CAPTURED THERE BY CUBAN OFFICIALS AND

RETURNED TO THE U.S.

PROSECUTORS HAD SAID JOSHUA HAKKEN, THE COLLEGE-EDUCATED ENGINEER, BECAME

PARANOID WITH DELUSIONS ABOUT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. Both he and his wife

pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Now the judge is saying BOTH will

have to convince a jury of that

SOT Defense Attorney Bryant Camareno

20:37:05

If you get a hole of his manifesto, you'll see he's delusional. His

delusions have been going on for many years, and she has been under his

duress.

Sharyn Hakken: I said too much on the plane

JH: It's okay

When THE TWO were CAUGHT ON CAMERA IN A HOLDING CELL in APRIL, they appeared

to be plotting their defense

Surveillance

JH: Be careful what you say to your cell mates

SH: About this?

JH: Yeah, no one can know about this.

SH: I know, I know, I know.

IN COURT MONDAY, THE NEVER SPOKE OR MADE EYE CONTACT a stark difference from

this KISSING couple SPEAKING ABOUT THEIR FUTURE TOGETHER.

Surveillance

JH: When everything goes down I'll come find you.

SH: If I get out before you, I promise I'll wait for you. Return to index of stories...
