GROWING CONTROVERSY TONIGHT IN CAPE CORAL OVER BOAT CANOPIES.

THE STRUCTURES HAVE LONG CREATED CONTROVERSY BETWEEN BOATERS LOOKING TO PROTECT THEIR INVESTMENT, AND HOMEOWNERS LOOKING TO PROTECT THEIR VIEWS.

NBC 2'S GEORGE SOLIS IS LIVE IN THE CAPE WITH THE CONTROVERSY AFTER COUNCIL CONSIDERS A PLAN TO ALLOW TWO BOAT CANOPY'S. Return to index of stories...

CAPE CORAL CURRENTLY ALLOWS FOR ONE BOAT CANOPY PER HOUSEHOLD.

TRT 130

"Do we want to lower our standards and be a second class city?" Patti Martin, Cape Coral P&Z

THAT'S THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION -- ASKED BY CAPE CORAL PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSIONER PATTI MARTIN ABOUT A BOAT CANOPY.

IT WAS ULTIMATELY ANSWERED.

"4 ayes 3 nays motion carried"

A CRUSHING BLOW FOR JIM LIMBRIGHT WHO SOUGHT TO GET HIS NEW CANOPY APPROVED.

"When we first researched it, everybody in the neighborhood was in favor of it." Limbright

HIS PLEA -- PUT UP A SECOND BOAT CANOPY OVER HIS 1988 CRISS CRAFT CATALINA.

IT SITS RIGHT NEXT TO HIS OTHER ALREADY COVERED BOAT.

"Most of the sun comes out of south and beats on the boat this way."

THE CITY DOES ALLOW A SINGLE CANOPY.

BUT BECAUSE OF THE SIZE OF THIS BOAT LIMBRIGHT IS SEEKING PERMISSION TO NOT ONLY PUT IN THE SECOND ONE BUT MAKE IT 6 FEET LONGER, 3 FEET WIDER AND TALLER THAN THE CURRENT REGULATIONS.

"It's one thing to look at a boat and palm trees it's another thing to look at huge canvas." Teri Forte

NEIGHBORS NOT ONLY FEAR FOR THE VIEW

BUT THE MESSAGE IT SENDS IF THE CITY GREEN-LIGHTS THE PLAN

"It affects our lifestyles, our property values, and I will do everything it takes to keep that from happening" Forte

COUNCIL MEMBER RANA ERBRICK SAYS AS THE ECONOMY IMPROVES IT'S BECOMING A RECURRING ISSUE.

EVENTUALLY IT MAY COME DOWN TO A CHANGE IN POLICY IN FAVOR OF THE BIGGER BOATS.

"We promote boating, recreational on the water activities, to promote that and not expect our residents to want to protect those investments that's something city council probably quicker than they want to is something they'll have to weigh in on. " Ebrick" Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

TRACKING STORMS THURSDAY

It was yet another beautiful Southwest Florida day Wednesday, with plenty of sun & highs in the low 80s. A few clouds will remain this evening, with temps in the 70s. Variable clouds will continue tonight, with warm lows in the mid 60s.

A powerful storm system begins to move towards the area Thursday. Clouds will rapidly increase in the morning time frame. Showers and storms will develop offshore and push into the region during the daytime hours. Right now, the best chance for storms will be in the afternoon hours.

Some storms may be strong to possibly severe Thursday. The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of Southwest Florida under a Slight Risk for severe weather. The greatest threats with these storms will be damaging winds. Highs on Thursday will be in the low 80s.

The storm system exits quickly Thursday Night, but some clouds will remain for Friday. Cooler air will also rush in behind the system, with highs on Friday in the mid 70s.

The weekend is still looking beautiful across the region. Expect plenty of sun both days, with highs in the low 80s Saturday and Sunday.

The quiet weather will continue into next week. We'll see partly cloudy skies Monday and Tuesday, with warmer highs in the low to mid 80s.

Another storm system arrives midweek, which will bring more cloud cover and possibly a few showers. Return to index of stories...
