FIRST WEATHER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

QUIETER WEATHER FOR FRIDAY

It was a very stormy Thursday across Southwest Florida, as a powerful storm system lifted northeastward out of the Gulf. The severe weather threat is over, but rain showers will continue this evening, with temps holding in the 60s. The rain will clear out overnight, with lows in the mid 60s.

Our storm system exits Friday, resulting in quieter weather. We'll keep some cloud cover around, with more sun expected late in the day. Cooler air will also move in, with highs only in the mid 70s.

The weekend remains in great shape. We'll see a heavy dose of sun and low humidity both Saturday and Sunday. Highs on Saturday will be in the upper 70s, with temps on Sunday in the low 80s. It will crisp in the morning, with lows both days in the 50s.

The nice weather looks to continue into next week. Mostly sunny skies will prevail Monday, with highs in the low 80s.

A few more clouds return Tuesday, with highs in the low to mid 80s.

It still looks like our next storm system will arrive midweek, bringing a good chance of showers across the area. Another round of cooler weather is now expected to close next week. Return to index of stories...

TOSS TO LUCAS-VOPLASMA

THE RAIN EARLIER TODAY HAD PEOPLE BREAKING OUT THE UMBRELLAS AND RUNNING FOR COVER TODAY ACROSS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.

WHILE THE CITY OF PUNTA GORDA WAS KEEPING A CLOSE EYE ON THE ROADS -- WORRIED ABOUT POSSIBLE FLOODING.

THE IRONY HERE IS THAT CREWS WERE WORKING ON A PROJECT TO PREVENT FLOODING.

NBC 2'S LUCAS SILER IS LIVE ALONG MARION AVENUE -- JUST WEST OF DOWNTOWN. Return to index of stories...

PUNTA GORDA WEATHER-REM-LIVE

THIS IS THE SAME AREA WHERE CREWS HAD TO SHUT DOWN ROADS AND RE-ROUTE TRAFFIC LAST SUMMER -- SIMPLY BECAUSE OF A QUICK AND STRONG STORM.

THE CITY DIDN'T HAVE TO DO THAT TODAY.

IF YOU TAKE A LOOK -- CREWS JUST STARTED WORK ON THIS PROJECT TO PREVENT FLOODING.

WHEN IT'S DONE -- PUNTA GORDA WON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT CLOSING DOWNTOWN STREETS ANYMORE. Return to index of stories...

NAT rain drops

1 P.M. LOOKED LIKE DUSK IN PUNTA GORDA TODAY.

A VISIT TO THE PARK CUT SHORT FOR IDA ZOZUS - SHE DIDN'T KNOW STORMS WERE ROLLING IN UNTIL SHE GLANCED AT CHARLOTTE HARBOR.

Ida Zozus, PG "No, no! I'm going home!. Make sure I'm safe!"

THE CONSTANT RAIN CAUSED STREAMS IN THE STREETS HERE - AS PEOPLE RUSHED INSIDE STORES AND HOPED TODAY WOULD NOT BE A REPEAT OF THE SUMMER.

Ida Zozus, PG "A lot of the streets are closed. because there's water, you can't go through. but they try to do the best."

Mark Gering, PG City Engineer "Most of the pipers that are underground are twelve to thirty inches in diameter - the ones were putting in now are six foot in diameter."

MARK GERING, PUNTA GORDA'S ENGINEER, SAYS THIS DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT WILL ULTIMATELY SAVE NOT JUST DRIVER A HEADACHE, BUT HIS CREWS AS WELL.

"Reduction of work - we won't have to take barricades to close roads off because we won't have these flooded streets."

THAT WON'T BE UNTIL JUNE - UNTIL THEN, ANY RAIN EVENT IS QUESTIONABLE - LEAVING THE PEOPLE OF PUNTA GORDA HOPING THEIR DITCHES DO THE JOB BEFORE THE FLOODING PROJECT FINISHES. Return to index of stories...
