I'm not used to not working.

HARRY THOMSON HAS BEEN UNEMPLOYED FOR OVER A YEAR.

You start to think you're not of any value to anybody.

And when I start to feel like that, I fell like I gotta get out of the house and start to do something.

AFTER 21 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, TWO COLLEGE DEGREES, THOMPSON BECAME ONE OF 68,000 MANUFACTURING WORKERS IN NEW JERSEY WHO'VE BEEN LET GO SINCE 2007.

It gets you down for a couple of days, maybe a week, but then you realized that you are not going to do yourself any favor by getting upset and depressed.

You can't give up,

You gotta keep hanging in there.

I'm a firm believer in that

THESE TWO MEN REPRESENT NEARLY FOUR MILLION AMERICANS WHO ARE CONSIDERED "LONG TERM UNEMPLOYED" -- OUT OF WORK FOR SIX MONTHS OR LONGER.

NEARLY HALF THE JOBLESS IN NEW JERSEY FALL INTO THIS CATEGORY - ONE OF THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGES IN THE COUNTRY.

The impact goes deep into their family.

Families are suffering when people are out of work.

There's a lot of emotional stress.

There's a lot of relationships that are damaged.

THOMPSON NOW ATTENDS "NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS", A WEEKLY COUNSELING SESSION FOR THE UNEMPLOYED TO SHARE LEADS ON JOBS

The job search effort that you have to put in today is intensive.

You really need to have a check-in point every week to see how you're doing.

BUT THE LONGER YOU'RE OUT OF THE WORKFORCE, THE HARDER IT IS TO GET BACK IN.

ACCORDING TO A RECENT STUDY, A PERSON UNEMPLOYED FOR EIGHT MONTHS OR MORE WILL GET CONTACTED FOR AN INTERVIEW ABOUT HALF AS MUCH AS SOMEONE WHO'S BEEN UNEMPLOYED FOR JUST ONE MONTH.

Nats.

TODAY THOMSON IS HOPEFUL.

AFTER ATTENDING THIS JOB FAIR IN HASBROUK HEIGHTS NEW JERSEY, ONE COMPANY INVITED HIM FOR A FOLLOW UP INTERVIEW.

9:07: We train the student about how to organize themselves, how to stop how to think, how to be able to manage their work and their behavior. That usually is associated with parent management also. If a child can't structure themselves how can you as a parent structure them so they can be successful.

RALPH SEES THE STRUCTURE, REQUIRED IN SPORTS, MAKES AN IMPACT.

MILITARY ASSAULTS-ONCAM

THE SENATE HAS VOTED-DOWN A CHANGE IN THE WAY SEXUAL ASSAULT ACCUSATIONS ARE HANDLED IN THE MILITARY.

EVEN AS TWO HIGH PROFILE CASES HIGHLIGHT THE PROBLEM.

NBC'S PETER ALEXANDER REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

MILITARY ASSAULTS-PKG

SEXUAL ASSAULT.ADVOCATES CALL IT AN EPIDEMIC WITHIN AMERICA'S ARMED FORCES.

NOW, TWO MORE HIGH-PROFILE EMBARRASSMENTS.

BRIGADIER GENERAL JEFFREY SINCLAIR, A FORMER TOP COMMANDER IN AFGHANISTAN, IN COURT THURSDAY ACCUSED OF FORCING A SUBORDINATE TO PERFORM SEX ACTS. HE DENIED ANY SEXUAL ASSAULT, BUT PLEADED GUILTY TO LESSER CHARGES.

THE PENTAGON ALSO REPORTS LT. COL. JAY MORSE, THE ARMY'S FORMER TOP PROSECUTOR FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT CASES, HAS HIMSELF BEEN SUSPENDED AFTER A LAWYER WHO WORKED FOR HIM ACCUSED MORSE OF TRYING TO GROPE AND KISS HER IN 2011.

NO CHARGES HAVE BEEN FILED AND MORSE HASN'T COMMENTED, BUT AN ARMY CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION IS UNDERWAY.

ALL THIS JUST AS LAWMAKERS REJECTED A BILL SPEARHEADED BY NEW YORK SENATOR KIRSTEN GILLIBRAND.

"The people who don't trust the chain of command are the victims."

GILLIBRAND WANTED TO MOVE SEXUAL ASSAULT CASES OUT OF THE MILITARY CHAIN OF COMMAND AND INTO THE HANDS OF INDEPENDENT PROSECUTORS.

SEN. KIRSTEN GILLIBRAND SOT:

"We owe so much to those who bravely serve our country -- and I will never quit on them."

MILITARY LEADERS HAVE REPEATEDLY INSISTED COMMANDERS NEED MORE RESPONSIBILITY, NOT LESS.

"Removing the convening authority of the chain of command is absolutely the wrong direction to go."

BUT VICTIMS, LIKE FORMER MARINE SARAH PLUMMER, WHO SAYS SHE WAS RAPED AFTER A PARTY AT THE NAVAL ACADEMY, WILL KEEP DEMANDING CHANGE.

"Having someone within your direct chain of command handling your case just doesn't make sense." Return to index of stories...

CRASH ON CAMERA-TC VIDBOX

A CANADIAN COUPLE EXPERIENCED FIRSTHAND THE DANGER OF DISTRACTED DRIVING - AND THEY CAUGHT IT ON VIDEO.

TAMARA CHERRY HAS THE STUNNING VIDEO Return to index of stories...

CRASH ON CAMERA-PKG

IT WAS A SUNNY DAY. THE ROADS WERE CLEAR.

RALPH IRELAND AND HIS WIFE IFKA FALIPOVICH WERE DRIVING TO THEIR NORTHERN ONTARIO HOME FROM A BUSINESS TRIP IN WINNIPEG.

"I was going along with the traffic, there was a car ahead of me and a car behind me."

THEY WERE NEAR KENORA, HEADING EAST ALONG HIGHWAY 17.

"The driver is listening to the radio, tune on the radio, nice driving song."

IRELAND HAD BOUGHT THE CAMERA MOUNTED ON HIS DASH TO CATCH ANYONE WHO MIGHT BREAK INTO HIS TRUCK.

LITTLE DID HE KNOW WHAT THAT DASH CAM WOULD CAPTURE.

"And all of a sudden, bam, there it is."

HERE IT COMES.

"Oh no!"

THE OTHER DRIVER WAS CHARGED WITH FAILING TO YIELD TO TRAFFIC.

AFTER A TRIP TO THE HOSPITAL, IRELAND AND HIS WIFE ASSESSED THE DAMAGE.

"You okay?"

"Oh my God! I'm hurt, but I'm all right."

THEIR TRUCK WAS SMASHED, THEIR CAMERA WAS SMASHED BUT THEIR MEMORY CARD WAS INTACT.

AND WHEN THEY SHARED THE VIDEO WITH FRIENDS, ONE OF THEM POINTED SOMETHING OUT.

"Everybody okay? I am so sorry. That was totally my fault."

NOT ONLY WAS IT HIS FAULT, BUT LOOK AT THIS.

"It definitely looks like he was on his cell phone and it definitely looks like he's looking down, he's not looking out toward us, he's not even looking out the front windshield."

Reporter Standup: The video surfaced just as police announced that the leading cause of death on Ontario roads last year. It wasn't impaired driving or speeding.it was distracted driving.

SOON, POLICE HAD THE VIDEO AS WELL.

"This is a classic example of how an investigation can turn on a dime."

BECAUSE A PICTURE PAINTS A THOUSAND WORDS.AND THIS ONE SENDS A POWERFUL MESSAGE.

If you're driving drive and if you need to talk on a cell phone, pull over and stop. If you need to change the channel on the radio, just pull over and stop because it's just not worth it." Return to index of stories...
