5:02 FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

Today's Weather Story

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.After a cloudy and stormy Thursday, our weather begins improving today, which leads us into some marvelous weather for the weekend.

We'll keep plenty of clouds around today, but we'll manage to see at least partial sunshine, especially during the afternoon as the clouds break up a bit more.

A few spotty, brief showers may wash ashore during the morning as moisture lingers over South Florida, but the afternoon should end up being mainly dry.

Temperatures start out fairly mild this morning with most of the area in the 60s and 70s, but as our winds become more northerly through the day, temperatures should only reach the mid 70s

Speaking of the wind, it's going to be a very breezy and blustery day across Southwest Florida, so hold on to your hats! Gusts may reach 30 mph at times with sustained winds out of the northwest from 15-25 mph.

One nice thing about the northerly wind is it lowers humidity levels nicely today, which will also carry over into our weekend.

As our sky begins to clear this evening and tonight, temperatures will turn noticeably cooler. Lows will drop down into the low 50s along the urban corridor and as low as the mid 40s deep inland.

After a cool start to our Saturday morning, the weekend forecast will work out beautifully for us. Expect plenty of sun with highs around 80 degrees. Humidity levels remain very comfortable, and rain chances stay out of the forecast.

We'll keep the nice weather around for the beginning of the week, but rain should return by mid week as the next cool front heads toward Southwest Florida. Return to index of stories...

IT MIGHT BE A LITTLE EASIER FOR YOU TO GET A TABLE AT YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN 2014.

A NEW SURVEY SHOWS PEOPLE PLAN TO DINE IN THIS YEAR.

AMERICANS PLAN TO CUT BACK SPENDING AT RESTAURANTS BY 9 PERCENT THIS YEAR.

CHAIN RESTAURANTS LIKE RED LOBSTER AND OLIVE GARDEN SAY THEY'RE ALREADY FEELING THE PAIN.

ANALYSTS SAY EVEN THOUGH THE ECONOMY IS IMPROVING PEOPLE ARE NOT QUITE READY TO SPLURGE ON DINNER JUST YET.

DINING OUT ISN'T ON THE MENU FOR 2014. AT LEAST FOR SOME PEOPLE.

AMERICANS PLAN TO CUT THE AMOUNTTHEY SPEND IN RESTAURANTS BY 9-PERCENT THIS YEAR.

THAT'S ACCORDING TO A NEW STUDY FROM ALIX PARTNERS.

IT'S NOT A PARTICULARLY NEW PHENOMENON, BUT IT'S GROWING.

IN RECENT YEARS, PEOPLE HAVE CUT RESTAURANT SPENDING BY 5-PERCENT.

DARDEN, THE OWNER OF RED LOBSTER AND OLIVE GARDEN, IS FEELING THE PAIN.

IT RECENTLY SAID THAT SALES AT SOME OF ITS RESTAURANTS FELL LAST QUARTER.

SO WHAT GIVES?

THE ECONOMY.

SURE, AMERICANS ARE FEELING BETTER ABOUT THE ECONOMY.

JUST LOOK AT CONSUMER CONFIDENCE.

IT'S IMPROVING, BUT STILL ISN'T BACK TO WHERE IT WAS BEFORE THE RECESSION.

SAME THING WITH THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE.

IT'S DROPPING, BUT IT'S STILL AT A HIGH LEVEL: 6-POINT-6 PERCENT.

BECAUSE OF THAT, PEOPLE JUST AREN'T QUITE READY TO SPLURGE ON DINNER OUT.

THAT'S NORMAL.

USUALLY WHEN PEOPLE CUT BACK, THEY CUT BACK ON NON-ESSENTIAL ITEMS FIRST.

5:32 FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

DRUNK TO GAMBLE-ONCAM, VO

A CALIFORNIA MAN WHO LOST HALF A MILLION DOLLARS AT A LAS VEGAS CASINO SAYS HE WANTS HIS MONEY BACK.

OVER SUPERBOWL WEEKEND. MARK JOHNSTON FLEW TOOK A TRIP TO SIN CITY.

INSIDE THE DOWNTOWN GRAND. HE DRANK 20 ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES IN 17 HOURS.

THAT'S ON TOP OF THE APPROXIMATELY TEN DRINKS HE SAYS HE CONSUMED BEFORE HE EVEN STEPPED INTO THE CASINO.

HE WAS SO DRUNK THAT HE BORROWED 500-GRAND FROM THE CASINO AND LOST IT.

--LEAD IN--

A MAN WHO LOST HALF-A-MILLION DOLLARS IN LAS VEGAS WANTS HIS MONEY BACK.

HE'S SUING THE CASINO.

KYUNG LAH REPORTS THE MAN CITES A NEVADA STATE LAW, SAYING HE WAS SERVED TOO MANY FREE DRINKS.

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

"They served me all the drinks. They should have cut me off."

IT WAS A WILD WEEKEND GAMBLING IN SIN CITY, BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO RETIRED REAL ESTATE INVESTOR MARK JOHNSTON DIDN'T STAY IN VEGAS.

HE LOST 500-THOUSAND DOLLARS GAMBLING, AND HE SAYS IT WASN'T HIS FAULT.

"Just picture a drunk walking down the street and he's drunk and someone pickpockets and takes his money from him. That's how I characterize it."

"You feel like they were stealing from you?"

"Absolutely."

THEY IS THE DOWNTOWN GRAND CASINO.

ON SUPERBOWL WEEKEND, JOHNSON CLAIMS IN A CIVIL LAWSUIT THAT THE CASINO TOOK ADVANTAGE OF HIM.

ACCORDING TO JOHNSTON'S LAWSUIT, HE WAS SO VISIBLY INTOXICATED, HE WAS "DROPPING CHIPS ON THE FLOOR, CONFUSING CHIP COLORS, AND SLURRING HIS SPEECH BADLY, AND HE WAS UNABLE TO READ HIS CARDS."

HE SAYS HE HAD A 44-HOUR GAP IN MEMORY THAT HE CALLS THE "BLACKOUT PERIOD."

HOW MUCH DOES HE CLAIM HE DRANK?

TWENTY ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES IN 17 HOURS.

THAT'S ON TOP OF THE APPROXIMATELY TEN DRINKS HE SAYS HE CONSUMED BEFORE HE EVEN STEPPED INTO THE CASINO.

HOW IS THAT THE CASINO'S FAULT?

JOHNSTON SAYS THE DOWNTOWN GRAND CONTINUED TO SERVE HIM FREE DRINKS, VIOLATING NEVADA STATE LAW THAT PROHIBITS COMPING DRINKS TO PATRONS WHO ARE VISIBLY DRUNK AND THEN LETTING THEM GAMBLE.

"How do you view that weekend now?"

"I view that weekend that. My responsibility is, look, I had some drinks at airport, I had a drink on the plane. At some point, that's my responsibility. The unfortunate part about it for them, they have a more, bigger responsibility than I do."

THE STATE GAMING COMMISSION TELLS CNN IT IS INVESTIGATING JOHNSTON'S CASE AND IF THE CASINO IS IN VIOLATION OF STATE LAWS, IT COULD BE SUBJECT TO FINES OR REVOCATION OF ITS GAMBLING LICENSE.

THE CASINO HAD NO COMMENT, SAYING IT'S IN THE MIDDLE OF A LAWSUIT WITH JOHNSTON.

AS FAR AS JOHNSTON, WE CHATTED NEXT TO HIS 250-THOUSDAND-DOLLAR MERCEDES.

HE SAYS HIS LAWSUIT IS NOT ABOUT THE MONEY.

"C'mon. This is Vegas. You gambled with the money. Shouldn't. Is this a sore loser?"

"I am not a sore loser. I've lost half a million. I've lost $800,000. I've lost a lot of money; I've won a lot of money. This has nothing to do with that. Obviously, I can afford what I lost. This is about you almost killing me."

"I feel like they picked my pockets. I feel like they totally took advantage of a drunk guy. Its like walking down the street and the drunk guy is walking down the street and you just go ahead and reach and grab his pocket and steal all his money."

GAMING REGULATIONS DO STIPULATE THAT THE CASINO CAN BE DISCIPLINED FOR BOTH ALLOWING A VISIBLE DRUNK PERSON TO GAMBLE AND PROVIDING COMP DRINKS TO A VISIBLY DRUNK PERSON. Return to index of stories...
