FOR QUITE SOME TIME, A FORT MYERS NEIGHBORHOOD HAS BEEN LABELED AS ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS COMMUNITIES IN LEE COUNTY.

HOWEVER THE TIDE IS TURNING.

AND RESIDENTS ARE FINDING UNITY IN THEIR COMMUNITY TO STOP THE VIOLENCE ONCE AND FOR ALL.

TRISH ROUTTE WITH CRIME STOPPERS HAS THE STORY. Return to index of stories...

CRIME STOPPERS-PKG

After enduring years of violence which has senselessly taken the lives of a long list of

young men and women, the Dunbar community has a message they want to shout out

loud and clear - the bloodshed must come to an end.

David Fairman - "We don't have to hurt each other and then show up to the funeral like

we were their best friends."

Residents of Dunbar recently gathered for a prayer vigil - a night to remember the lives

taken due to acts of violence - and invigorate them to help stop the violence once and for

all.

Taunya Cola - "We've got to cease fire. It's a rippling effect. This one shoots this one,

then this one shoots that one. It's just back and forth, but when do we say enough is

enough. Enough is enough."

Through song, dance, prayer and skits, residents echoed a common core belief - that

unity amongst neighbors is key to ensure that good overpowers evil. Pictures and a video

montage of those murdered in recent memory struck a chord that these are victims whose

families still remember, still suffer and still await justice.

Trish Routte - Each one of these photographs serves as a somber reminder of someone

who lost their life to violence. And just one anonymous phone call could make all the

difference in providing closure to families.

Ruth Grice, who along with many other grieving families attended the vigil, is still

waiting for the day she finds out who killed her brother Washington, who was shot and

then left in the middle of the road on May 15, 2012.

Ruth Grice- "I wish that someone would come forward. That way we could have some

type of closure. Because right now, I suffer everyday thinking about my brother getting

killed."

Trish Routte- "Two years ago, a murder would happen and our phones would go silent.

Nobody spoke of anything. People saw things - I know that. There was a block party on

Mothers Day 5 years ago - about 100 people. Someone was shot - a five year old was

shot - one man was murdered. Nobody saw anything. Do you believe that? Neither do

I."

But as the residents of Dunbar unite in a strong and powerful way, they hope their efforts

will motivate people to do the right thing, tell what they know and help stop the violence

that's been cloaking their community for far too long.

Gretchen Lorenzo - "If no one comes forward and tells what they know, there's nothing

they can to do bring justice to these people who have lost their lives and to those family

members who are hurt and broken."

Pastor Tony Brindley has lived in Dunbar all his life - he's lived through the violence,

and firmly believes that united front will ensure that change takes place.

Pastor Tony Brindley - "One house, one neighbor, one family at a time."

For Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, I'm Trish Routte. David Fairman:15 -:19

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

It's a great start to our Sunday morning across Southwest Florida, and that's a sign of what's to come for the rest of the day.

With the exception of a little fog, our sky will stay clear and quiet through the first half of the day, allowing ample sunshine along with very comfortable temperatures.

Highs will reach the low 80s for most of the area today. The beaches and coastal zones will stay slightly cooler as the winds come off the Gulf in the afternoon.

Our winds will be light out of the east from 5-10 mph, and humidity levels will stay low and pleasant.

If you're planning on heading out to Fort Myers Beach for the Shrimp Festival, expect a clear and sunny day with highs in the upper 70s. The forecast also looks great for the boaters and beach goers with seas only at 1-2 feet and the Gulf water temperature at 71 degrees.

Rain will stay out of the forecast again today, and our weather remains dry for Monday and Tuesday as well.

The next chance for showers arrives Wednesday as another cool front moves through Southwest Florida, which will send another batch of cooler weather for the second half of the week. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTES: PLANT BASED DIETS-TRX, VO IN PLASMA

MOVE OVER MEAT.

PLANT DIETS ARE BECOMING THE FOOD OF CHOICE FOR MANY WHO ARE INTERESTED IN IT'S HEALTH BENEFITS.

HEALTH MATTES: PLANT BASED DIETS-PKG

SAMANTHA SOLUM HAS A GROWING INTEREST IN HEALTHY EATING.

SAMANTHA SOLUM/TRYING PLANT BASED DIET

RUNS:

:17 Well I started working here in high school and just got interested in this type of food.

THE SEED WAS PLANTED WHEN SHE STARTED WORKING AT CHEF BROOKE'S

NATURAL CAFE.

SAMANTHA SOLUM/TRYING PLANT BASED DIET

RUNS:

:17 Then I volunteered on a farm for a while then I learned how to grow my own food.

IT'S NOT JUST A TOP DIET TREND- PLANT BASED EATING HAS

RISEN TO BE A TOP HEALTH TREND. RECENT FINDINGS INDICATE THAT

INSTEAD OF MEAT-HEAVY MEALS, YOU'RE BETTER OFF FOCUSING ON

PLANTS--WHOLE GRAINS, LEGUMES, VEGETABLES, FRUITS, NUTS, SEEDS AND

SOY.

JEANNE STRUVE/REGISTERED DIETITIAN

RUNS:

2:57 When I say plant-based it's all foods that are grown and as close to the ground as

possible. Because when you take foods that are grown the more you process it the less

nutritious it is.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

A landmark study in California looked at 50 years of research, examining a spectrum of

vegetarian diets from people across the US and Canada. The results were impressive:

People who eat a plant-based diet live longer, weigh less, have less cancer and

cardiovascular disease. Which is the nation's top killer.

JEANNE STRUVE/REGISTERED DIETITIAN

RUNS:

7:30: You will find decreases in your bad cholesterol, your total cholesterol, your

triglycerides they have even done a lot of research and seen reversal of heart disease.

THE TRADE-OFF MANY FEARED WAS LOSING THE PROTEIN FOUND IN MEAT.

TURNS OUT- MOST VEGETABLES ARE AT LEAST 40% PROTEIN. THINK NUTS,

SOY- THE GRAIN QUINOA IS EXTREMELY RICH.

JEANNE STRUVE/REGISTERED DIETITIAN

RUNS:

5:39 The amount of protein we need to survive or even thrive is much lower than what

people think. And a plant-based diet can give you plenty of protein.

THIS BACK-TO-BASICS WAY OF EATING IS APPEALING TO A YOUNGER

GENERATION.

SAMANTHA SOLUM/TRYING PLANT BASED DIET

RUNS:

1:05 It's just fresher, makes me feel better. And I mean I'm young, but it definitely

makes a difference.
