FIRST ALERT FORECAST

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Warm and dry to start to the week"

It was a picture perfect weekend across Southwest Florida, with cool mornings and warmer afternoons. Our stretch of dry weather will continue for the next couple of days, before showers make a return to the area by Wednesday.

After a few patchy mid and high level clouds this morning, mostly sunny skies will dominate the forecast. Expect daytime highs to be warm again this afternoon. Away from the coast, expect thermometer readings in the lower half of the 80s, while beaches and coastal locations are a few degrees cooler due to the gulf breeze.

Temperatures will be even milder tonight, as they settle into the lower 60s area wide. We'll even see the potential for another round of patchy fog by dawn on Tuesday.

Our mainly dry weather pattern will hold in place through Tuesday. High pressure will keep our skies partly sunny with afternoon temperatures in the lower to middle 80s. Rain prospects will remain less than 10%. By mid week, we'll be tracking another system evolving in the Gulf of Mexico. This will throw more cloud cover across the region on Wednesday with scattered showers and a few storms. As the cold front passes by late Wednesday, cooler and drier weather will return in its wake. Daytime highs will return to the middle and upper 70s, with morning lows in the upper 40s to low 50s. This will set the stage for another delightful weekend with more sunshine and comfortable humidity values. Return to index of stories...

SMARTPHONE PARENTING-PKG

--- PKG ---

WE'VE ALL SEEN KIDS TUNE OUT THE REST OF THE WORLD. TOTALLY ENGROSSED IN TECHNOLOGY.

NOW NEW RESEARCH SUGGESTS PARENTS CAN BE JUST AS DRAWN TO THE LIGHT OF TABLETS AND SMARTPHONES AS KIDS ARE.

"It raised a lot of interesting questions or hypotheses about the way we use devices around our kids."

DR. JENNY RADESKY AND COLLEAGUES AT BOSTON MEDICAL CENTER. DID A STUDY IN WHICH THEY OBSERVED HOW 55 CAREGIVERS INTERACTED WITH YOUNG CHILDREN WHILE THEY WERE EATING AT FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS.

SOME OF THE ADULTS WERE ABSORBED IN THEIR DEVICES. TEXTING, SWIPING AND SCROLLING THEIR WAY THROUGH THE MEAL. IGNORING THE KIDS.

EXPERTS SAY FACE-TO-FACE CONVERSATIONS ARE CRUCIAL TO KIDS' DEVELOPMENT OF LANGUAGE AND SOCIAL SKILLS.

"How to take turns in a conversation and build those sorts of social skills, how to build empathy, you need to be take someone else's perspective, watch their facial reactions."

RESEARCHERS READILY ADMIT -- THIS SNAPSHOT OF CAREGIVER / KID RELATIONSHIPS IS NOT MEANT TO GIVE A CLEAR PICTURE OF ALL PARENTS.

"We recognize that we had no window into the parents' state of mind, their stresses at the moment."

BUT IT'S A GOOD REMINDER FOR EVEN THE MOST WELL-INTENTIONED MOMS AND DADS TO TURN OFF THEIR PHONES. AND TUNE IN TO THEIR KIDS.

MALAYSIA CRASH-PKG

SCRIPT:

Malaysian officials still baffled.

Azaharudin Abdul Rahman / Malaysia Civil Aviation Chief:

"There is talk of possible hijack. This is not discounted. We are looking

at every angle."

This morning an urgent investigation is underway to identify two imposters

who boarded that mysterious plane using stolen passports.

This is the real Luigi Maraldi -- happy to be alive and not aboard the now

infamous Malaysian Airlines flight 370.

Maraldi's passport along with an Austrian's Christian Kozel, were stolen in

Thailand months ago.

An early key to the investigation: surveillance video captured by security

cameras at the airport.

HISHAMMUDDIN HUSSEIN / MALAYSIAN TRANSPORT MINISTER -- 08;00;08;16

I CAN CONFIRM THAT WE HAVE VISUALS ON THEM THROUGH THE CCTV AND I ALSO CAN

CONFIRM THE TWO INDIVIDUALS CONCERNED AND THEIR DETAILS WITH BE FORWARDED TO

THE INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES

The FBI and other US intelligence agencies are hoping to get that video and

compare it to images of known terrorists and criminals from around the world

using facial recognition technology.

REP MIKE ROGERS / CHAIRMAIN, HOUSE INTELLIGENCE COMMITTEE -- THIS WEEK

IT WILL BE A MATTER OF TIME. THEY'LL PROBABLY IDENTIFY THEM.

The two one way tickets appear to be have been bought at the same time at a

travel agency in a Thailand resort town south of Bangkok and this morning

law enforcement officials are wondering if that suggests coordination

between them.

Malaysian authorities could not answer why the men were able to board the

flight using stolen passports -- and Interpol, which keeps millions of

records of stolen passports including those of Maraldi and Kozel, said they

were not contacted by Malaysian officials.

GFX

chief Ron Noble issued a statement Sunday asking, "why should countries wait

for a tragedy?" He said last year alone passengers around the world boarded

planes "more than a billion times without having their passports screened

against INTERPOL's databases" That amounts to a gaping hole in security -

for both criminals and terrorists. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

IN MAY, OGWYN PLANS TO JUMP OFF THE WORLD'S TALLEST MOUNTAIN WEARING A WINGSUIT.

HE'LL SOAR FOR ABOUT TEN MINUTES -- DIVING TEN-THOUSAND FEET TO BASE CAMP -- REACHING SPEEDS OF 150 MILES PER HOUR -- ALL WHILE A WORLDWIDE AUDIENCE WATCHES LIVE ON TELEVISION.

OGWYN HAS BEEN PULLING THESE KINDS OF AMAZING STUNTS MOST OF HIS LIFE.

HE'S SOARED PAST MOUNTAINS LIKE THE MATTERHORN.

AND SCALED MANY OF THE WORLD'S TALLEST PEAKS -- INCLUDING MOUNT EVEREST -- WHEN HE WAS JUST 24.

IN 2010, HE WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO FLY PAST EVEREST IN A WINGSUIT. THAT WAS A TEST FLIGHT.

"All my climbing skills, all my flights, BASE jumps, everything I've done for the last twenty years was just practice for what I'm about to do on Everest now."
