IT TAKES A STRONG STOMACH OR HOLDING YOUR BREATH TO WALK THROUGH ONE CHARLOTTE COUNTY NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE A MYSTERIOUS FISH KILL IS STINKING UP THE AREA - NOW, VULTURES ARE TAKING OVER AND TURTLES DISAPPEARING.

VILLA LAKE DEAD FISH-PKG

"We've never seen anything like it… this lake has always been alive with all types of wildlife, all types of birds."

IT'S NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO IGNORE THE STENCH.

"Oh, it's terrible."

MIKE OLSON AND HIS NEIGHBORS HAVE BEEN PICKING UP DOZENS OF DEAD FISH FOR THE PAST THREE WEEKS -

IF THAT WASN'T FOUL ENOUGH -

NAT birds

"The buzzards started flying in."

VULTURES IN YARDS AND ON ROOFTOPS -

THERE ARE AS MANY BIRDS NOW AS THERE USED TO BE TURTLES…

"We had hundreds of turtles in this lake and now we see one."

SO WHAT'S GOING ON?

NEIGHBORS FIRST SPECULATED THE POSSIBLITY OF ILLEGAL DISPOSAL OF SCRAPS FROM A SHUT DOWN METH HOUSE ACROSS BENNET LAKE.

"We thought that the workers maybe had dumped something in the lake and killed the fish."

ACCORDING TO FLORIDA FISH AND WILDLIFE, THAT'S UNLIKELY -

"It's in line with a low dissolved oxygen kill… people were calling and say that fish were gasping at service."

KELLY RICHMOND, THE AGENCY'S SPOKESPERSON, SAYS THE LAKE COULD LACK OXYGEN FROM EITHER AN ALGAE BLOOM OR WEATHER CHANGES - HIGH LEVELS OF OXYGEN AT THE SURFACE MIX WITH LOW LEVELS AT THE BOTTOM, MAKING IT HARDER FOR WILDLIFE TO SURVIVE.

"Even though they think that's that… they can't really know that."

"They wouldn't even come out, they said they get lots of calls like this."

FWC CONFIRMS THEY HAVE BEEN GETTING SEVERAL SIMILAR CALLS FROM ACROSS THE STATE RECENTLY - WHILE FISH KILL IS MORE COMMON DURING THE RAINY MONTHS, EXPERTS SAY IT CAN STILL HAPPEN.

"I've lived here for 12 years and I've never seen it happen."

BUT WITHOUT TESTING THE LAKE, THERE'S NO WAY TO KNOW FOR SURE IT'S NATURAL CAUSES - AND SINCE THIS IS A PRIVATE, MANMADE LAKE THAT DOESN'T FLOW INTO OTHER WATERWAYS, THE COMMUNITY WOULD HAVE TO PAY A PRIVATE COMPANY TO CHECK IT.

THE FWC SAYS TURTLES ARE LESS ACTIVE DURING THE DRY SEASON AND THAT MAY EXPLAIN WHY RESIDENTS CAN'T SEE THEM.
