GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO N-B-C 2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M CLIFTON FRENCH.

AND I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH

TODAY IS SATURDAY, MARCH 15TH.

WE ARE KICKING OUR WEEKEND OFF TO A SUNNY START.

FOR MORE ON OUR WEKEND FORECAST HERE'S METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNINIG. Return to index of stories...

TODAY'S WEATHER-WX CENTER

The final weekend of winter will end up feeling very much like spring across Southwest Florida.

We'll be in store for an abundance of sunshine and plenty of warmth as temperatures soar into the mid 80s both today and Sunday.

Humidity levels will stay nice and low again today but will be on the rise tomorrow as winds become more southerly.

In addition to the wind shift tomorrow, winds become stronger as well with winds gusting up to 20-25 mph during the afternoon, so Sunday won't be as good for the boaters as today.

With the lack of any significant moisture, rain won't be a concern through the weekend, but we may have some green on the radar just in time for St. Patrick's Day.

An area of low pressure will form in the northern Gulf over the weekend and will likely send rain and a few storms our way late Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Clouds may be slow to exit Tuesday, but the rest of the week should be nice and at least partly sunny with highs in the low to mid 80s.

Spring officially begins Thursday, and the forecast will follow suit; highs in the mid 80s and lows in the 60s.

Have a great weekend!

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

WPLG WEB COPY:

MIAMI - The director of Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers was sentenced to 14 days

in jail Friday on a contempt of court charge.

Richard Masten was sentenced after he refused to turn over all reports

pertaining to an anonymous tip.

Masten appeared before Judge Victoria Brennan and said he was not willing to

risk allowing a judge to determine whether any tip information should be

disclosed.

"The issue is the court asking Crime Stoppers to go back on their promise,"

Masten told the judge.

Then Masten tore up the tip, stuffed the paper in his mouth and swallowed it

.

"I think you're client's very passionate," Brennan told Masten's attorney. "

But I think sometimes passion can cloud judgment."

Masten, a former police chief in Miami Shores, has been director of Miami-

Dade Crime Stoppers since 2008.

"We promised the people that give us information to solve murders, serious

violent crimes in this community, that they can call us with an assurance

that they will remain anonymous," Masten told Local 10.

A judge stayed the sentence until next week, leaving Masten to digest his

fate for a few more days.

"I was afraid that I was going to be taken into custody and

would be part of the property and there it goes, so I had a little lunch,"

Masten said, adding that it tasted "pretty dry." Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Return to index of stories...

PARENTS, LISTEN UP!

BEFORE YOU GET ON YOUR CHILD'S CASE ABOUT NOT FINDING WORK, REMEMBER. THESE DAYS, IT'S HARD TO FIND A JOB.

JUST 26-PERCENT OF TEENS, AGED 16 TO 19, HAD A JOB IN 2011.

BUT THAT NUMBER HAS PLUNGED.

11 YEARS EARLIER, 45-PERCENT OF TEENS HAD A JOB.

THIS DATA COMES FROM THE BROOKINGS INSTITUTION, WHICH ALSO SAYS THE CURRENT TEENAGE EMPLOYMENT LEVEL IS THE LOWEST ON RECORD, IN THE POST WORLD WAR TWO ERA.

THE SITUATION ISN'T THAT MUCH BETTER FOR COLLEGE KIDS.

LOOK AT 20 TO 24-YEAR OLDS. 61-PERCENT OF THEM HAD A JOB IN 2011. COMPARED TO 72-PERCENT IN 2000.

MOST LIKELY TO BE OUT OF WORK?

LOWER-INCOME YOUNG ADULTS, MEN, AND BLACKS.

BROOKINGS INSTITUTION SAYS THERE ARE A FEW ISSUES AT PLAY. AND ONE OF THEM IS THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM.

THE GROUP SAYS HIGH SCHOOLS SHOULD DO A BETTER JOB PREPARING STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE, POSSIBLY BY OFFERING DUAL ENROLLMENT.

SOME HIGH SCHOOLS ALLOW STUDENTS TO GO TO A LOCAL UNIVERSITY FOR CLASSES FOR PART OF THE DAY.

BUT COLLEGE ISN'T FOR EVERYONE.

BROOKINGS SAYS JOB TRAINING SHOULD BE A BIG EMPHASIS, INCLUDING 2-YEAR DEGREES OR APPRENTICESHIPS.

REGARDLESS OF WHAT CHANGES ARE MADE, THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT AS THE ECONOMY GETS BETTER, JOB OPPORTUNITIES SHOULD INCREASE.

GOOD MORNING 3-2SH-PUSH

GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME BACK TO THE FINAL HALF HOUR OF NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M CLIFTON FRENCH

AND I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH.

WE'LL HAVE YOUR TOP STORIES OF THE DAY IN JUST ONE MINUTE.

BUT FIRST YOUR FIRST ALERT FORECAST WITH METEOROLOGIST, JASON DUNNING. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.The final weekend of winter will end up feeling very much like spring across Southwest Florida.

Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS: COULD YOU USE A HAND-TRX, VO IN PL

INJURIES OR MEDICAL CONDITIONS LIKE CARPAL TUNNEL OR ARTHRITIS CAN RESULT IN YOUR 'LOSING YOUR GRIP' ON LIFE.

BUT A SPECIALIZED THERAPIST CAN HELP YOU REGAIN CONTROL.

IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS AMY OSHIER LOOKS AT WHO COULD BENEFIT FROM HAND THERAPY. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS: COULD YOU USE A HAND-PKG1.40

PKG:

REHABBING A HIP OR KNEE IS NOTHING NEW- BUT HOW ABOUT AN INJURED

HAND? THEY OFTEN BARE THE BRUNT OF OUR ACTIVE LIFESTYLES. LOSING

FUNCTION CAN BE A DISASTER, BUT IS IN MANY CASES AVOIDABLE.

BRETT BENNETT/CERTIFIED HAND THERAPIST

RUNS:

:48 We'll have patients that come in that have had surgery related to arthritis in their

thumbs and we'll get them referred to us to do splinting initially. Then exercises to begin

range of motion, then eventually begin some strengthening exercises.

OTHER TIMES IT'S AN INJURY THAT LEADS PATIENTS TO LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH

SYSTEM'S OUT-PATIENT THERAPY.

BRETT BENNETT/CERTIFIED HAND THERAPIST

RUNS:

1:22 Whether it's due to maybe an electrical saw or to a knife or to glass they will have

surgery to repair the tendons again kind of the same process we'll get them referred to us.

HAND THERAPY CAN ACTUALLY INCLUDE THE ENTIRE ARM- IN THE CASE OF A FALL-

SOMEONE MAY HURT THEIR WRIST, ELBOW EVEN SHOULDER. AND COULD USE A HAND.

BRETT BENNETT/CERTIFIED HAND THERAPIST

RUNS:

02:38 We really have to evaluate the whole extremity. 3:04 We'll assess their range of

motion, 3:26 assess the strength in their hand, assessing the strength in their arm as well,

given that information then we'll set up an exercise program that they can do easily at

home.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

You think of rehab- and it usually brings to mind mending muscles. But hand therapy

expands the scope to include nerve issues- and helps people get in touch with their

feelings.

BRETT BENNETT/CERTIFIED HAND THERAPIST

RUNS:

5:56 Say for example someone has had an injury to a nerve and they've lost sensation in

their fingers, maybe due to carpal tunnel even where they don't feel things readily. So we

would teach them exercises to help re-educate the nerve. Teach them also manipulation

type exercises to try help re-educate the nerves, get them used to handling different type

textures.

THE FINISHING TOUCH- IS TO RE-ARM PEOPLE WITH THE SKILLS THEY NEED TO

NAVIGATE THEIR EVERYDAY LIFE. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY

OSHIER. Return to index of stories...
