HELLO-TOWER CAM, 2 SHOT PUSH

GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

WE ARE WAKING UP TO A BEAUTIFUL START TO OUR SUNDAY MORNING.

I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH.

AND I'M

BEFORE WE GET INTO TODAY'S TOPS STORIES. LET'S TALK ABOUT OUR WEATHER.

FOR WHAT'S IN STORE FOR OUR SUNDAY AND THE WEEK AHEAD.

HERE'S METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

It's a milder start to our Sunday with temperatures only cooling into the low to mid 60s this morning across Charlotte, Lee, and Collier County.

We're in store for plenty of sun again today, but a few more clouds will mix in with sunshine through the afternoon.

Even with a little more cloud cover around, temperatures should have no trouble reaching the mid 80s.

Some of our inland communities like LaBelle and Immokalee may even get as warm as 86-88 degrees this afternoon.

One big change we'll notice today is the wind; a stiff southerly breeze will develop through the day, and winds may gust up to 20-25 mph during the afternoon.

Due to the more southerly component of the wind. humidity starts increasing today, but there won't be enough moisture or instability just yet to form any showers.

Our dry weather pattern will likely end on St. Patrick's Day as an area of low pressure develops over the northern Gulf, sending some scattered rain and even a few storms our way. There's still some question on the timing of the rain, but it's looking more like the bulk of the activity will hold off until late in the day. We'll need to track this system closely and perhaps tweak the timing a little over the next day.

It's possible some rain and clouds will linger into Tuesday morning, but the rest of the week should be pretty nice and at least partly sunny with highs in the 80s.

Spring officially begins Thursday, and the forecast will follow suit; highs will be in the mid 80s and lows in the 60s. Return to index of stories...

Getting both knees replaced is becoming more common. 40% of the time when

someone gets arthritis in one knee, they will also get it in the other. Or by waiting to long

to fix the first bad knee, they damage the second.

DR. GEORGE MARKOVICH/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

they had the other one done. 11:08 Often times we'll do them relatively staged with

short amount of time in between or simultaneous bilateral procedures.

To his nieces and nephews, he was "Uncle Pop," and for one little boy, he was Dad. But

now these young children have had to come to terms with the fact that the man they loved

so much is no longer here.

Veraka Stewart - "My brother is the heart of the family. Everybody loves him. Everytime

you see him, he's smiling."

But in July 2011, after a night out with friends, Alonzo Stewart was murdered at his

apartment complex, robbed and then ambushed with gunfire.

Shanice Stewart - "What gets us is that our brother was gunned down - shot multiple

times. If they wanted, they could have just robbed him and let him go about his business.

But they robbed and killed him. They wanted him dead."

Trish Routte: There's an inherent fear in the community about retaliation, however

people need to remember that if they come forward to provide information and the

suspect lands in jail, then they can't hurt anyone else and retaliation should not come into

the picture.

Det. Emily DeStefanis - "It seems the community has embraced this crime. And when

you keep silent, it reinforces that it can continue happening, and there should be no

tolerance of this."

Alonzo's sisters have been, and will continue to plea with the community to step up and

tell what they know.

Veraka Stewart - "They need to come forward and say something. Because this is not

right that this person, whoever killed our brother, gets to walk around here like nothing

happened."

Detectives say that until residents start talking, violent crimes, like the murder of Alzonzo

Stewart, will only continue.

Det. DeStefanis - "There's a small group of people who are causing these violent

issues and the silence that people have adopted, and living under fear with, builds their

confidence to continue doing what they're doing."

For the Stewart family, and others still mourning the deaths of loved ones caught in the

crossfire, it comes down to one basic thing.

Det. Destefanis - "There's two options. Leave these people in the community to

essentially be a community terrorist, and keep everyone afraid, or turn them in and get

them off the streets. Build your way to a better community."

THIS MORNING WE HAVE LEARNED FROM ONE SOURCE. THAT THE FIRST DRAMATIC

TURN OFF COURSE BY THE MALAYSIAN 777. WAS PRE-PROGRAMMED.

THAT'S RIGHT. WHOEVER WAS AT THE CONTROLS. PROGRAMED THE HARD LEFT TURN.

. FOLLOWED BY TURNING OFF TWO CRITICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS.AS FIRST

REPORTED BY ABC NEWS.

SOT: JOHN NANCE, ABC AVIATION ANALYST

"Somebody made this happen and that somebody had to have sophisticated

flying skills, probably for the 777. In other words the suspicion falls on

the two pilots."

LAW ENFORCEMENT SAYING THE SAME THING. WHILE A HIJACKING HAS NOT BEEN RULED

OUT, PILOT SUICIDE IS GETTING A LOT OF ATTENTION.

PART OF THE REASON. THE WAY THE JET WAS FLOWN. TURNING LEFT. THEN

WEST. BUT THEN WHERE?

THE SATELLITE COMMUICATION SUGGESTS THOSE WIDE PATH BUT MOST LIKELY THE JET

HEADED SOUTH INTO THE INDIAN OCEAN. THE JET FLEW FOR AT LEAST 6 HOURS.

AFTER IT WAS LAST SEEN ON RADAR.

SOT: JOHN NANCE, ABC AVIATION ANALYST

"It's all consistent with somebody who wanted to simply vanish from the face

of the Earth and make sure that the ultimate crash site was never found."

DID ONE OF THE PILOTS KILL THE OTHER. IT POSSIBLE. WHY DIDN'T PASSENGERS

REBEL? WHOEVER WAS FLYING COULD HAVE DEPRESSURIZED THE CABIN. THOSE

OXYGEN MASKS ONLY WORK FOR A FEW MINUTES.

EVEN WITH THE SEARCH NOW NARROWED OF OFF THE WEST COAST OF AUSTRALIA.

FINDING THIS JET MAY NOT BE EASY.

evidence at all." Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL
