CELEBRATE SAINT PATRICKS DAY WITH SOME STORMS.

FIRST WX-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

SAINT PATRICK'S DAY STORMS

Our Monday morning starts out fairly cloudy as we wait for showers and storms to move into Southwest Florida. By midday we could see a few stray showers and storms begin to arrive.

As we head into the afternoon, a band of rain with some embedded storms will move in from the northwest, making for an unsettled afternoon and evening.

The bulk of the rain will likely pass through Southwest Florida between 3-9 p.m., and then we'll start to dry out overnight into Tuesday morning.

A few of today's storms could pack a punch with the main threat being strong gusty winds.

Rain totals should stay below an inch for most of Southwest Florida, but it's not out of the question for a few spots to pick up over an inch if some of the cells train over the same spots.

Once the rain and clouds move away from South Florida Tuesday morning, our weather looks great for the remainder of the week. We'll enjoy plenty of sunshine along with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the 60s. Return to index of stories...

SURPRISING FACTS ABOUT GUINESS-PKG

GUINNESS IS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR IRISH BEERS IN THE WORLD AND TODAY IS ITS BIG DAY. SO WHY NOT SHOOT DOWN A FEW MYTHS ABOUT IT? THIS LIST IS COURTESY OF TIME MAGAZINE…

MYTH NUMBER ONE -- THAT GUINNESS IS VERY HIGH IN ALCOHOL.

GOOD NEWS, IT'S NOT AND EVEN HAS LESS ALCOHOL THAN MOST BEERS. GUINNESS HAS 4.2-PERCENT ALCOHOL COMPARED WITH THE AVERAGE BEER, WHICH CONTAINS 5-PERCENT ALCOHOL.

MYTH NUMBER TWO -- THAT GUINNESS IS SO HEAVY THAT IT MUST BE HIGH IN CALORIES.

NOT SO. A 12-OUNCE SERVING IS ONLY 125 CALORIES, AND IF YOU COMPARE THAT TO A BUD LIGHT, THE LIGHT BEER HAS ONLY 15 FEWER CALORIES THAN THE SAME AMOUNT OF GUINNESS. MOST OF THOSE CALORIES COME FROM THE ALCOHOL. THE DARK COLOR AND SWEETNESS, THAT'S FROM ROASTED BARLEY.

AND LASTLY -- THIS IS THE MYTH THAT WAS MADE POPULAR BY SOME CLEVER MARKETING IN THE 1920'S BY THE BRAND -- THAT GUINNESS IS GOOD FOR YOU.

BUT MARKETING IT WAS AND WE ALL KNOW THE ACTUAL GUIDANCE FROM DOCTORS -- MODERATE CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL MAY BE GOOD FOR YOU BUT THERE IS ALSO A LOT OF RESEARCH THAT SAYS THERE IS A CORRELATION BETWEEN MODERATE ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION AND MANY HEALTH PROBLEMS. Return to index of stories...

IT'S BEEN THREE WEEKS SINCE 56-YEAR-OLD MONA DESHOTEL HAD HER LAST CIGARETTE.

"It's an addiction it's a bad addiction. very hard to quit"

MONA BECAME A SMOKER 38 YEARS AGO.

SHE TRIED TO QUIT, BUT WAS NEVER SUCCESSFUL.

"The longer you smoke the harder it is to quit"

THEN, AROUND CHRISTMAS TIME, MONA HEARD ABOUT A GIVE-AWAY OF A DIFFERENT SORT: A FREE C-T LUNG CANCER SCREENING.

"All the odds were against me why not get it done?"

KNOWING HER RISK FOR LUNG CANCER, MONA ENTERED.

"I register for everything and win nothing!"

BUT THIS TIME, SHE DID WIN. SOMETHING MUCH BIGGER THAN A SCREENING: IT BECAME A CHANCE TO LIVE LONGER AFTER A CANCEROUS NODULE WAS FOUND AND REMOVED FROM HER LEFT LUNG.

"I know it would've ended up into a full blown lung cancer and then where do you go after that?"

PULMONOLOGIST BEN THOMPSON SAYS MONA FITS THE CRITERIA FOR THE NATIONAL LUNG SCREENING TRIAL.

PARTICIPANTS, AGES 55 TO 74, SMOKED AN AVERAGE OF A PACK A DAY FOR 30 YEARS.

THE STUDY COMPARED THE EFFECTS OF TWO TESTS TO DETECT LUNG CANCER: SOME GOT A LOW-DOSE C-T SCAN ONCE A YEAR FOR THREE YEARS. OTHERS GOT A STANDARD CHEST X-RAY.

IN THE C-T GROUP, DEATH RATES DROPPED BY 20 PERCENT.

"They'd have an initial scan and then scanned annually unless we found something and then there might be additional scans in addition to that"

"The low dose CT scan process is simple you lie on a bed that slowly moves into the center of a large x ray machine that takes 3D images of the lungs as it moves around you."

"very painless very quick"

WHILE MONA'S NODULE TESTED POSITIVE FOR CANCER, MOST ARE NON-CANCEROUS, OR BENIGN.

"of the nodules that are detected which is what we call these about 94% of the nodules were benign"

BUT FOR THE PERCENTAGE OF PATIENTS LIKE MONA, THE EARLY SCREENING COULD MEAN LIFE OR DEATH.

MONA SWEARS SHE WON'T SMOKE AGAIN AND SHE'S LOOKING AT HER FUTURE AS A PROMISING SECOND CHANCE.

BLIND DOG STOLEN-PKG

CINDY SUNDGREN SAYS HER BLIND DOG SCOUT IS HER LIFE. SUNDAY MORNING AT LA QUINTA INN IN NORMAN, SHE PARKED HER CAR AND LEFT IT RUNNING IN THIS SPOT TO RUN INSIDE AND CHECK OUT. THE NEXT THING SHE KNEW.

I saw out the window that my truck was rolling

CINDYS CAR WAS BEING STOLEN, BUT CINDY SAYS IT WASN`T THE TRUCK SHE WAS WORRIED ABOUT.

I had left my dog scout that always travels with me that was in the truck when it was stolen.

CINDY WAS TALKING ABOUT HER EFFORTS TO FIND HER SCOUT , WHEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN.

they found her mom. what. they found her. where.

IN A FLASH, THE FAMILY WAS ON THE ROAD TO REUNITE WITH SCOUT. AFTER A SHORT DRIVE, CINDY WAS OUT OF THE CAR, AND UP THE STAIRS WHERE SHE MET SCOUT. A RESIDENT HAD TAKEN HER IN AFTER SHE HAD BEEN SITTING IN ONE SPOT FOR HOURS IN THE COLD, BLIND AND ALONE.

"are you happy?"

RELIEVED AND REUNITED, CINDYS TEARS OF JOY ARE ENOUGH FOR TWO SETS OF EYES.

"I cannot tell you how happy we are to find her shes a very special dog and shes irreplaceable." Return to index of stories...

SCIENTOLOGY-2 SHOT

a NEW CONTROVERSY FOR THE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY TODAY.

A WOMAN CLAIMS THE CHURCH TRIED TO TEAR APART HER FAMILY.

SHE SAYS THE CHURCH IS FORCING HER TO CHOOSE BETWEEN HER FAITH -- HER SON --

AND HER DAUGHTER.

DAN HARRIS HAS HER STORY. Return to index of stories...

SCIENTOLOGY-PKG

THIS IS WHAT REMAINS OF SARA GOLDBERG'S RELATIONSHIP WITH HER DAUGHTER

ASHLEY PHOTOGRAPHS AND MEMORIES A SAD SITUATION THIS MOTHER is blaming ON

THE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY.

SOT: I want this horrible practice of disconnection to end

GOLDBERG SAYS SHE SPENT 36 YEARS IN THE CHURCH, REACHING THE TOP LEVEL OF

SPIRITUAL PROGRESSION

BUT THE PROBLEMS BEGAN, SHE SAYS, WHEN HER SON, NICK, DEVELOPED DOUBTS ABOUT

THE CHURCH.

SOT: I didn't like the way they recruited/ the theories they told you about

life and the universe

HE STARTED ASSOCIATING WITH vocal CRITICS OF THE CHURCH, INCLUDING MARTY

RATHBUN AND MIKE RINDER, FORMER HIGH RANKING OFFICIALS WHO QUIT AND ARE NOW

CONDEMNED BY THE CHURCH AS LIARS AND APOSTATES.

AS A RESULT, NICK WAS LABELLED A "SUPPRESSIVE PERSON,"

HIS MOTHER SAYS CHURCH OFFICIALS ACTIVELY AND REPEATEDLY PRESSURED HER AND

HER SCIENTOLOGIST HUSBAND TO QUOTE "DISCONNECT" FROM HER SON, TO CUT OFF

TIES COMPLETELY

SHE FEARED THAT REFUSING MEANT SHE, TOO, WOULD BE LABELLED a SUPPRESSIVE

PERSON AND WOULD LIKELY LOSE HER RELATIONSHIP WITH HER DAUGHTER, ASHLEY,

STILL A DEVOUT SCIENTOLOGIST.

SOT: NO MOTHER SHOULD EVER HAVE TO MAKE THAT CHOICE.

THE CHURCH HAS LONG MAINTAINED IT DOESN'T FORCE ANYONE INTO DISCONNECTING

GFX: In a statement, the Church says "Any accusations or inferences that the

Church interfered in the private affairs of this family are untrue."

But GOLDBERG GAVE US A DOCUMENT ONE SHE FIRST SHARED WITH THE TAMPA BAY

TIMES, WHICH FIRST BROKE THIS STORY. IN WHICH A CHURCH OFFICIAL SAYS HE

CANNOT APPROVE of her continued relationship WITH HER SON EXPLICITLY USING

THE WORD DISCONNECTION.

ULTIMATELY, SHE SAYS, SHE AND HER HUSBAND- CHOSE TO STAND BY NICK. THE

RESULT, SHE SAYS, THEY WERE BOTH LABELLED SUPPRESSIVE. Then HER DAUGHTER

CHOSE TO CUT TIES.

SOT: she says you know until it changes I have to disconnect from you and we

held each other, we cried

ALL OF WHICH, SHE SAYS, LEAVES HER WITH DOUBTS ABOUT THE CHURCH SHE ONCE

LOVED AND DESPAIR ABOUT A FAMILY NO LONGER UNITED.

SOT: I WANT MY FAMILY BACK. Return to index of stories...

PEDICURE TERROR-VO PLASMA

PEDICURE TERROR-PKG

63-YEAR-OLD BRUCE WALTERS SAYS HE REMEMBERED FEELING SOME DISCOMFORT WHILE HE WAS GETTING A PEDICURE IN HIS HOMETOWN IN INDIANA.

HE DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING OF IT. BUT 10 DAYS LATER WHEN HE RETURNED TO D-C, HE STARTED FEELING FLU-LIKE SYMPTOMS AND CONFUSION.

"I was not completing sentences and kind of disoriented."

DOCTORS FOUND AN INFECTION RAGING THROUGH HIS BODY, PARTICULARLY IN HIS LEG. THE MOST LIKELY CAUSE WAS BACTERIA THAT ENTERED HIS BIG TOE DURING A PEDICURE.

"he was getting so much swelling in his leg, that it was cutting off circulation to his leg and if that continued, he was going to lose the leg."

HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY. INFECTIONS FROM NAIL SALONS ARE RARE, BUT THEY DO HAPPEN.

"it's scary to think this can happen from a minor incident. A minor break in the nail can actually be an entry point for dangerous bacteria."

MELISSA WYMAN -- REGIONAL MANAGER FOR ELIZABETH ARDEN RED DOOR SALON SAYS PEOPLE SHOULD BE EXTRA OBSERVANT. LOOK CLOSELY AT CLEANLINESS. THERE SHOULDN'T NAIL CLIPPINGS OR FILE DUST ON THE GROUND OR AT WORK STATIONS.

STAINLESS STEEL BOWLS FOR CLEANING FEET CAN BE SAFER THAN WHIRLPOOL TUBS -- THAT'S BECAUSE BACTERIA CAN GET CAUGHT IN THE JETS AND HOSES IF THEY'RE NOT CLEANED AFTER EACH USE.

AND, CHECK WHERE THE TECHNICIANS ARE GETTING THEIR TOOLS. IT SHOULD COME FROM A STERILIZED POUCH LIKE THIS.

"sometimes, those little details make the difference between having a safe clean service and being in a situation where you can get some sort of infection." Return to index of stories...
