FIRST WEATHER-ANIBOX STC

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

THUNDERSTORMS TONIGHT

A line of strong storms in the Gulf of Mexico is moving this way and we will be tracking heavy rain, strong winds and lightning this evening. A Tornado Watch has been issued for DeSoto, Charlotte and Lee Counties through 11:00 p.m. It's possible the watch area will extend inland and/or south as the evening progresses. Remember. a "Watch" area means that residents in the affected counties should be on alert for rapidly changing weather. If the weather becomes more serious tonight, "Warnings" will be issued. Windy weather will continue for most of the evening and it's very possible that some wind gusts could exceed 45 - 50 mph as the strong storms move in. It appears that the threat for severe weather may hold off for our immediate area later this evening. The line of storms is moving to the east rather slowly while the individual storms within the line are racing northeast at over 40 mph.

Tonight's potential for severe weather will be moving through the area tomorrow morning and be off the east coast during the day on Tuesday. We will return to relatively quiet weather for the rest of the week. Highs will be in the 80's each day and overnight lows will be in the 60's. Return to index of stories...

16:48 we were watching it at one point I thought for sure we were

going to lose it 16:52

JENNY APFEL HEARD A NOISE- LOOKED OUT THE WINDOW OF HER NORTH PORT

HOME AND SAW FLAMES SHOOTING 20 FEET INTO THE AIR.

Jenny Apfel, north port

16:16 he was hosing the perimeter of the property back there and at

some point the police came and told us to evacuate. 16:25

LUCKILY CREWS CONTAINED SUNDAY'S FIRE BEFORE IT DESTROYED ANYONE'S HOME.

BUT THE DAY AFTER THE FIRE IS JUST AS DANGEROUS - ESPECIALLY WITH WIND

GUSTING MORE THAN 20 MILES AN HOUR AHEAD OF A STORM.

Patrick Mahoney, Florida Forest Service

6:57 with the front coming in with the wind that's going to be there,

we're going to be checking it more than we normally would just to make

sure. 7:05

PATRICK MAHONEY IS A WILDFIRE MITIGATION SPECIALIST.

HE SAYS WIND CAN CARRY AN EMBER FROM HERE UP TO A MILE TO AN UNBURNED

AREA AND START A NEW FIRE.

Patrick Mahoney, Florida Forest Service

5:51 we'll be back out later today to check it to make sure with the

winds that we've got coming in. Jus to keep a check on it, make sure

everything's good. 6:00

A LONG STEADY SHOWER WOULD SOLVE MOST OF THE PROBLEMS.

ON THE OTHER HAND- MAHONEY SAYS A QUICKLY PASSING DOWNPOUR WITH

LIGHTNING DOESN'T DO AS MUCH GOOD AS YOU'D EXPECT.

ONCE WE GO BACK TO LOW HUMIDITY- HOT - WINDY DAYS FIRES CAN POP UP

WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS.

Patrick Mahoney, Florida Forest Service

7:41 if you see a lightning strike you want to watch it for several

days, that area. Because it could go down in the ground, burn

underneath and then on the right day pop up and make a run. 7:50 Return to index of stories...

ONE INJURED PELICAN AFTER ANOTHER.

FOR THE CONSERVANCY OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA - THE LAST THREE MONTHS WERE FAR FROM ORDINARY.

Nicole Johnson/Conservancy of SWFL/12:59:31 "we've seen a 1700 percent increase in pelican injuries."

MORE THAN 150 INJURED BIRDS WERE BROUGHT IN - COMPARED TO 11 LAST YEAR.

AND THEY'RE ALL COMING FROM THE NAPLES PIER.

PELICANS TANGLED, DRAGGED AND HOOKED - SOMETHING THE CITY HOPES TO PUT A STOP TO.

Nicole Johnson/12:57:55 "we do support it as a city initiated effort."

THAT EFFORT IS FOCUSED AROUND TREBLE HOOKS.

AT WEDNESDAY'S MEETING - COUNCIL WILL DICUSS A POTENTIAL BAN ON HOOKS HAVING MORE THAN TWO PRONGS.

Nicole Johnson/12:58:33 "with the 3 hooks, it's just that much more difficult to extract the hook from the bird, it really gets sunken in there into their flesh."

FOR NAPLES ANGLER JERRY DESMOND - HE HAS ONE QUESTION.

Jerry Desmond/13:05:41 i say why? everybody should ask why."

ANGLERS FOR YEARS - DESMOND AND HIS GRANDSON PAT CONTI AREN'T ON BOARD WITH THE IDEA.

Pat Conti/13:06:09/Visiting Naples/"I think the only thing that's going to happen from it is it will anger people."

THEY SAY IT ALL STARTS WITH EDUCATION - AND KNOWING WHAT TO DO IF YOU HOOK A PELICAN.

Jerry Desmond/13:04:18 "if people would use the nets that are provided and so forth, they'd have no problem."

BUT SOMETIMES EDUCATION - MIGHT NOT BE ENOUGH.

Nicole Johnson/Conservancy/12:59:47 "the fact of the matter is, we're just seeing a tremendous increase." Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL
