STUDENTS AT PUNTA GORDA MIDDLE SCHOOL CAN'T TURN THEIR ATTENTION AWAY FROM MS. ASARO

Cathy Corsaletti, PG Middle School Principal

1:06:15 you have to find the right people who are passionate about what they do bc it's a

tough job. 1:06:20

PRINCIPAL CATHY CORSALETTI PLAYS THE NUMBERS GAME EVERY TIME THERE'S AN OPENING AT HER SCHOOL.

Cathy Corsaletti, PG Middle School Principal

1:03:29 I'd say in the past there used to be 25-30 and even more. And the numbers have definitely dwindled down, sometimes you get as little as 8-10 applicants per job. 1:03:38

THE STATE EXPECTS A SHORTAGE OF TEACHERS NEXT YEAR FOR CORE SUBJECTS LIKE MATH - SCIENCE AND READING.

IT'S NO SURPRISE TO CHARLOTTE COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT DR. DOUG WHITTAKER.

Dr. Doug Whittaker, Charlotte Co. Superintendent

51:52 we've lived with that for now 2 decades at least as long as I've been in leadership role. 51:59

HE SAYS DISTRICTS ARE STARTING TO HIRE AGAIN AFTER THE RECESSION - BUT ALL THE TEACHERS LOOKING OR JOBS THEN ARE GONE.

SO HE'LL RECRUIT AT COLLEGES - TRYING TO LURE GRADUATES TO THE AREA.

Dr. Doug Whittaker, Charlotte Co. Superintendent

56:26 we bring our flyers which show the palm feeds and the sunshine. You show up in march up in central Indiana with that and it sounds good. 56:38

LEE COUNTY WILL HOST A RECRUITMENT FAIR THIS MAY - AND COLLIER COUNTY EXPECTS TO ADD 300 TEACHERS NEXT YEAR.

THE SHORTAGE MEANS DISTRICTS WILL LOOK AT BUSINESS MEN AND WOMEN TO BECOME TEACHERS AND FILL THE NEED.

STARTING NOW ALLOWS DISTRICTS TO BE READY BY THE FIRST BELL OF NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.

GM SAFETY-ON CAM-TRX

SOME BIG CHANGES TODAY FOR GENERAL MOTORS.

HAMMERED BY RECALLS AND EVEN CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS -- THE COMPANY'S CEO CREATED A NEW PRODUCT SAFETY POSITION.

NBC'S CHRIS CLACKUM HAS THE STORY. Return to index of stories...

GM SAFETY-PKG

GENERAL MOTORS' ANNOU NCEMENT MONDAY. OF A RECALL. AFFECTING MORE THAN A MILLION AND A HALF VEHICLES.

.IS ON TOP OF A RECALL LAST MONTH AFFECTING ANOTHER A MILLION AND A HALF CARS.

SO, CEO MARY BARRA FELT COMPELLED TO SPEAK PUBLICLY.

"We have apologized but that is just one step in the journey to resolve this"

ANOTHER STEP TUESDAY WAS BARRA PROMOTING 40 YEAR G-M VETERAN JEFF BOYER TO THE NEWLY CREATED POSITION OF V-P OF GLOBAL VEHICLE SAFETY.

"What GM is doing by creating a person in charge of global safety is giving safety its own voice within the organziation"

ALTHOUGH, NO DEATHS OR INJURIES HAVE BEEN TIED TO IT.

.MONDAY'S RECALL INVOLVED MOSTLY SUV'S.BUICK ENCLAVES.GMC ACADIA'S.CHEVY TRAVERSES.AND SATURN OUTLOOKS BECAUSE THEIR SIDE AIRBAGS MAY BE DEFECTIVE.

THAT'S FAR DIFFERENT FROM LAST MONTH'S RECALL.WHERE IGNITION SWITCH MALFUNCTIONS WERE TURNING OFF CERTAIN G-M CAR ENGINES AND DISABLING AIRBAGS.

.THAT CAUSED AT LEAST 12 DEATHS AND 31 CRASHES.

After all something went terribly wrong with our pricess in this instance and terrible things happened."

ANALYSTS SAY AT LEAST G-M'S TRYING TO BE TRANSPARENT ABOUT WHAT'S TERRIBLE.

". and saying we made a mistake or putting processes in place to say this will be preventable in the future, I think is all they can do at this point"

BUT WITH OVER THREE MILLION VEHICLES UNDER RECALL, G-M HAS A LOT MORE TO DO.
