GENERAL MOTORS KNEW 10 YEARS AGO THERE WERE PROBLEMS WITH SOME OF ITS CARS, BUT ONLY NOW ISSUED A RECALL.

SO TOOK G-M SO LONG TO ADDRESS THE ISSUES?

ALLISON KOSIK EXPLAINS. Return to index of stories...

GM LATEST-PKG

Something went wrong with our process in this instance and terrible things happened.

THAT'S G-M CEO MARY BARRA'S LATEST VIDEO MESSAGE TO EMPLOYEES OF GENERAL MOTORS CONCERNING THE RECALL OF 1 POINT 6 MILLION VEHICLES THAT ARE LINKED TO AT LEAST 12 FATALITIES.

G-M ANNOUNCED THE ACTION IN FEBRUARY, BUT THE PROBLEMS BEHIND THE RECALL ARE AT LEAST 10 YEARS OLD.

WHAT TOOK GM SO LONG TO ISSUE AND ADDRESS THE RECALL?

WHY DID FEDERAL REGULATORS FAIL TO ACT?

THESE ARE THE QUESTIONS BEING ASKED BY CRIMINAL INVESTIGATORS.

AND THE FAMILIES OF VICTIMS INVOLVED WANT ANSWERS AS WELL:

Even though I knew she was gone, I reached over, I kissed her forehead and whispered in her ear, "Brooke I will vindicate your death."

IN 2001, THE PROBLEM WAS FOUND IN THE SATURN ION.

HOWEVER, INTERNAL REPORTS INDICATE THE MATTER WAS RESOLVED WITH A REDESIGNED SWITCH.

BUT IN 2004, ANOTHER ENGINEER REPORTED BUMPING THE KEY MID DRIVE AND SHUTTING DOWN THE CHEVROLET COBALT.

YET IT APPEARS THAT -- NOT ONLY DID G-M KNOW -- SO, TOO, DID FEDERAL REGULATORS LIKE JOAN CLAYBROOK, the FORMER head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

They already knew there were some deaths by 2007 and injuries.

A G-M report to the NHTSA reads: "After consideration of the lead time required, cost, and effectiveness of each of these solutions, the was closed with no action,"

NHTSA DID NOT CLASSIFY IT AS A SAFETY ISSUE IN 2007.

WHY?

BECAUSE, IT CLAIMED DRIVERS COULD STILL STEER AND STOP THE CAR TO SAFELY RESTART IT.

A special accident investigation team went to investigate a crash Wisconsin. And in the course, of doing that, they discovered that the ignition slipped in the accessory position -- means you can run the radio but not car. The Department of Transportation met with General Motors in March of 2007 and talked about it.

THAT SAME YEAR G-M'S LEGAL DEPARTMENT OPENED A FILE, BUT DIDN'T NOTIFY ENGINEERS OF THE PROBLEM.

There's absolutely no reason GM's lawyers should not have notified engineers right away as soon as that case came to their attention.

NEW G-M C-E-O MARY BARRA SERVED AS VICE PRESIDENT OF GLOBAL MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING IN 2008.

IT'S UNCLEAR WHEN BARRA KNEW OF THESE ISSUES, BUT SHE'S HEADING UP G-M'S MASSIVE RECALL - JUST TWO MONTHS INTO THE TOP JOB -

SHE'S APPOINTED A NEW VEHICLE SAFETY CZAR.

G-M HAS OFFERED 500 DOLLARS TO CUSTOMERS WHOSE CARS HAVE BEEN RECALLED TOWARDS THE PURCHASE OF A NEW VEHICLE.

BUT THE COMPANY HAS YET TO ADDRESS LIABILITY FOR ANY INCIDENTS BEFORE G-M'S 2009 BANKRUPTCY.

JEFF ROSSEN HAS NEW DETAILS. Return to index of stories...

OSCAR PISTORIUS COULD BARELY STAND TO LISTEN TODAY.HEAD IN HANDS. REEVA STEENKAMP'S FAMILY.EMOTIONAL, TOO.OF COURSE.AS THIS BALLISTICS EXPERT REVEALED HIS BOMBSHELL CONCLUSIONS.WHAT REALLY HAPPENED THAT NIGHT.

"At a height of 155 centimeters, holding the firearm straight, it's too high for the trajectory."

OSCAR SAYS REEVA WAS GOING TO THE BATHROOM.THAT IT WAS ALL AN ACCIDENT.HE MISTOOK HER FOR AN INTRUDER.

BUT THIS EXPERT REFUTED THAT TODAY.

"I tried in the position where she's seated on the toilet seat but the wound on the hip is too low for that. / Now, I came to the conclusion that most probably the wound on the hip was when she was in the standing position between the door and the toilet seat."

EVEN MORE DISTURBING.HE SAYS, SHE WAS TRYING TO PROTECT HERSELF.

"If you look at the position that I'm referring to as the defensive position, it's like this position. The wound on the left hand, just between the 2 fingers. The bullet perforated here."

**white flash**

"And she was a bit facing down. It comes in here. It also penetrated the head of the deceased."

BUT OSCAR'S DEFENSE TEAM FIRED BACK GIVING ALTERNATE THEORIES.ONE OF THEM, THAT SOME OF REEVA'S INJURIES DIDN'T COME FROM BULLETS.BUT RATHER FALLING ONTO THE MAGAZINE RACK.

ROUX: "If those wounds were caused by the magazine rack then your theory would not be correct?"

EXPERT: "My lady, I am still saying I'm sticking to my theory. I won't change my theory."

JEFF: "How damaging was this for Oscar today? "

LAURIE: "The testimony given today was very damaging for the defense. The expert did not crack under pressure and he painted a picture of Reeva cowering for her life in the corner."

JEFF: "Can they come back from this?"

LAURIE: "Perhaps with other experts / It's going to be difficult."

ALSO THIS MORNING, WE ARE GETTING A CLOSER LOOK INTO OSCAR PISTORIUS' LIFE.

A POLICE TECH EXPERT TOOK THE STAND - HE ANALYZED OSCAR'S IPADS, HE HAS TWO OF THEM.

IN THE DAYS BEFORE THE SHOOTING, THE SEARCH HISTORY ON THOSE IPADS INCLUDES LUXURY CARS AND FREE PORNOGRAPHY.

ALSO JUST MOMENTS AGO, PROSECUTORS ANNOUNCED THEY NEED TO POSTPONE THE TRIAL UNTIL MONDAY - THEY NEED MORE TIME TO CONSULT WITH THEIR WITNESSES, SAYING THE PLAN TO REST THEIR CASE EARLY NEXT WEEK.AND THEN, OF COURSE, ITS OSCAR'S TURN.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"COOL START, WARMER FINISH"

Now that a cold front has pushed through the area, our days will be sunnier with a warming trend through the week. We'll keep a mainly dry weather pattern in place through the weekend, with increasing rain prospects by early next week.

As we head into the late morning hours, the low clouds and patchy fog will eventually mix out. Otherwise, lots of sunshine will fill our skies through the afternoon , with a few clouds migrating across the state on a light northeasterly breeze during the day. Daytime highs will be seasonable, as temperatures climb into the lower half of the 80s under mostly sunny skies. Temperatures will hold in the upper 70s closer to the coast, due to the afternoon gulf breeze.

Tonight, mostly clear skies will remain in the forecast. It won't be as cool, but still quite comfortable, as temperatures dip into the lower 60s. The cool spots will be mainly north and east of the interstate, with readings in the upper 50s.

High pressure will keep our afternoons mostly to partly sunny, with warming temperatures. Expect early morning temperatures to range from the lower to middle 60s, while daytime highs gradually work their way back into the lower to middle 80s. The weekend is looking warm and dry, with increasing rain chances by early next week as a cold front moves across the peninsula. Return to index of stories...

GROUNDBREAKING MEDICAL NEWS FOR WOMEN TODAY.

A NEW STUDY FINDS OLDER WOMEN HAVE A MUCH HIGHER RISK OF ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE THAN BREAST CANCER.

ELIZABETH COHEN REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

ALZHEIMERS AND WOMEN-CLIP PKG

THE BREAST CANCER WALKS, THE RIBBONS, THE WHITE HOUSE LIT UP IN PINK.

I love the people around me.

LIKE MOST WOMEN, MARILYN WHITE HAD SEEN THESE SYMBOLS. SHE KNEW SHE SHOULD BE CONCERNED ABOUT BREAST CANCER, BUT NOT ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE.

Alzheimer's was not on my radar, I don't know why I had never paid any attention to it, but I guess being busy, it never dawned on me.

WHITE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH ALZHEIMER'S TWO YEARS AGO.

AND IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON HER RADAR AND ON ALL WOMEN'S RADARS, ACCORDING TO A NEW REPORT FROM THE ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION.

IT FINDS THAT WOMEN IN THEIR 60'S ARE ABOUT TWICE AS LIKELY TO DEVELOP ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE THAN THEY ARE TO GET BREAST CANCER.

AND ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AFFECTS WOMEN MORE THAN MEN -- ALMOST TWO OUT OF EVERY THREE ALZHEIMER'S PATIENTS ARE WOMEN.

nats

WHEN SHE WAS YOUNGER, WHITE FELT INVINCIBLE. SHE WAS AN ACCOMPLISHED ATHLETE. SHE BROUGHT HOME A SILVER MEDAL IN TRACK AND FIELD FROM THE 1964 OLYMPICS.

NOW 69 YEARS OLD, SHE WISHES SHE HAD BEEN MORE AWARE OF ALZHEIMER'S.

It would have helped me if I knew stage by stage what could happen. I think I would have caught it sooner, I would have recognized it sooner and maybe been able to start a medication or something sooner.

SHE WAS MORE AWARE OF BREAST CANCER AND FOUND A LUMP IN HER BREAST. IT WAS CANCER. NOW THE CANCER'S GONE AND MARILYN'S A FIVE YEAR SURVIVOR.

BUT SADLY, HER ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE WON'T BE GOING AWAY, THERE ARE NO EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS.

DOCTORS WHO TREAT ALZHEIMER'S SAY MORE MONEY AND AWARENESS CAN CHANGE THAT. THEY'RE COMPETING WITH OTHER DISEASES FOR DWINDLING RESEARCH FUNDS, HOPING TO MAKE THEIR CASE FOR MORE MONEY FOR A CURE.

NM TUMBLEWEEDS-PKG

THINGS ON BENT TREE ROAD ARE USUALLY PRETTY QUIET. IT'S A PLACE WHERE WIDOW, JOYCE HARLESS, SAYS SHE ENJOYS LIVING ALONE.

"It's scary to me. I don't like it at all."

BUT THIS WEEK IS A DIFFERENT STORY.

"There's no way I can, I usually do my own yard work, but there's no way I can do this. There's no way."

"As you can see the tumble weeds are piling 7-8 feet high, making it impossible to walk through."

"There's no way to get through to the back at all."

"It's been horrible, very horrible."

JOYCE'S NEIGHBORS SAY ALL THE WINDY DAYS ARE CREATING A PROBLEM THAT SEEMS NEVER-ENDING.

"We just keep pushing them out, they keep coming, we keep pushing them out but it's like more just keep blowing in."

THEY SAY THEY NEED HELP

MIDDLE FINGER SCULPTURE-PKG

"Frick frack I say."

CALL IT GIVING SOMEONE THE FINGER, OR THE BIRD.

THIS 10 FOOT TALL STATUE JUNE SORTORE HAS PUT UP IN HER YARD -- SHE SAYS HAS A DIFFERENT MEANING OF THE "F" WORD.

"I've still got fight, I'm still able to fight."

SORTORE SAYS SHE'S FED UP WITH PAST TRIBAL LEADERS -- HOMEOWNERS LETTING THEIR CATTLE RUN FREELY, RUINING HER YARD -- AND ALLEGED MISHANDLING OF TRIBAL FUNDS.

"There was one project where a guy was supposed to revamp our water, the guy went off on a holiday and went and bought furnishings for his house."

SO SHE BUILT THIS STATUE.

WE CAN'T SHOW YOU THE WHOLE THING BECAUSE OF F-C-C REGULATIONS.

IT'S BEEN UP IN HER YARD FOR FIVE YEARS.

BUT IT JUST BECAME AN ISSUE LAST WEEK WHEN THE TRIBAL OFFICE ASKED HER TO REMOVE IT, CALLING IT AN EMBARRASSMENT AND OFFENSIVE, ESPECIALLY TO YOUNG CHILDREN.

"Do you think it's okay for kids to walk by here and see this?"

"Sure, sure, my grandson, my youngest grandson helped me on it."

WE FOUND A YOUTH CENTER AND PLAYGROUND JUST DOWN THE STREET FROM SORTORE'S HOME.

DESPITE OBJECTION FROM THE CURRENT TRIBAL ADMINISTRATION, SORTORE PLANS TO KEEP THE ONE-GUN-SALUTE IN HER YARD.

SHE SAYS IT'S A FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND PIECE OF ARTWORK.

"Why is it bad, why is it obscene? To me it's not obscene."

"It's not hurting anyone, it's all in which your interpretation is." Return to index of stories...
