ARE PARENTS HAPPY-PKG

JENNIFER SENIOR/AUTHOR, ALL JOY AND NO FUN: THE PARADOX OF MODERN PARENTHOOD

IT'S THE DIRTY LITTLE SECRET OF MODERN PARENTING. THAT THE DAY TO DAY

GRIND CAN TURN HAPPY PEOPLE INTO LESS HAPPY PEOPLE.

SOT Jessie Thompson

For me the lows are feeling sad when my kids feel sad

JESSIE A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER AND MOTHER OF 3 CONFESSES-- THOUGH SHE

LOVES HER KIDS AND BEING A MOM SHE DIDN'T ANTICIPATE THE LESS JOYFUL

MOMENTS AND GUILT THAT COMES WITH THE TERRITORY.

SOT Jessie Thompson

Society is off balance. We are so self examining that I think it creates a

lot of guilt

AUTHOR AND MOM JENNIFER SENIOR IS NOW EXPOSING THE UNANTICIPATED UNDERBELLY

OF PARENTING- IN HER NEW BOOK-- ALL JOY AND NO FUN - HER RESEARCH

SHOWS THAT PARENTS ARE REALLY NO HAPPIER THAN NON-PARENTS. KIDS DON'T

NECESSARILY MAKE LIFE ALL THAT FUN

Jennifer Senior SOT

So the no fun part I think people are much more reluctant to speak about. I

mean we know that there is some drudgery associated with parenting. I don't

know if we are fully prepared to talk about how much anxiety we experience

as parents.

THE HARDEST STAGES SHE SAYS ARE THE EARLY YEARS AND THE TEENAGE YEARS-- BOTH

STAGES WHERE A CHILD IS FIGHTING THEIR PARENTS FOR THEIR INDEPENDENCE AND

PARENTS HAVE A HARD TIME LETTING GO.

SHE ALSO BELIEVES PARENTING IN THE DIGITAL AGE OF PINTREST, FACEBOOK AND

INSTGARM ADDS TO MOTHERS GUILT AND FEELING OF INADEQUACY BUT RATHER THAN

FOREGO PARENTING-HER VIEW IS PARENTS JUST NEED TO BE REALISTIC.

Jennifer Senior SOT

beware of someone who speaks with great certainty about what they're doing.

None of us know. It's ok to be uncertain.

WHAT SHE SAYS THOSE SCIENTIFIC STUDIES CANNOT MEASURE IS THE LONG-TERM JOY

THAT COMES WITH RAISING KIDS.

14;52;54;28 Talking about fun is a very thin form of happiness. It

is such a thin little layer. It's focused on gratification/ Joy, it is very

different. It's about a deep abiding connection to someone I think parents

report more highs -they report more moments of meaning. They report more

purpose and structure in their live.

FOR JESSIE A DAY OF TOUGH PARENTING MOMENTS CAN BE ERASED WITH A SIMPLE HUG. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

AM FOG FOLLOWED BY PLENTY OF SUNSHINE

We start our day with mainly clear skies and mild conditions. The one concern through the morning hours will be the development of some dense fog. It happened yesterday morning and the atmospheric set up isn't much different today, so it is likely to happen again and stick around for a few hours. Once we are past the morning fog, we'll see another beautiful day with mostly sunny skies. Afternoon highs will reach into the lower 80s. Upper 70s are expected at the beaches with the sea breeze keeping things a little cooler there.

For Friday and the weekend, we'll continue with highs in the mid 80s and lows will climb from the low to mid 60s. Through the weekend, cloud cover will be increasing, but it shouldn't really bother your weekend plans. Right now, the chance for any rain through the weekend remains very low. Into next week, there will be a chance for showers arriving on Tuesday. We'll keep tracking and updating your forecast for the weekend and into next week, so check back often. WE'VE TOLD YOU ABOUT A BLOOD TEST THAT CAN PREDICT WHETHER YOU WILL DEVELOP ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE.

DO YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW IF YOU WOULD GET THE DISEASE?

ONE EXPERT SAYS YES.

RENEE TESSMAN REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

ALZHEIMERS BLOOD TEST-CLIP PKG

THERE'S BEEN NO GOOD TEST TO PREDICT IF SOMEONE WILL GET ALZHEIMER'S. BUT NOW RESEARCHERS AT GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY SAY THEY'VE DEVELOPED A BLOOD TEST THAT, WITH 90% ACCURACY, CAN DETERMINE WHETHER SOMEONE IN THEIR 70'S WILL DEVELOP ALZHEIMER'S IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS.

"It's one small study but it's a big step."

DEBBIE RICHMAN IS WITH THE ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION.

"We currently estimate over 5 million people in the country with the disease there will potentially be 16 million by 2050."

THE TEST LOOKS AT 10 LIPIDS OR FATS IN THE BLOOD. RESEARCHERS BELIEVE THOSE LIPID LEVELS DECREASE AS BRAIN CELLS DIE.BEFORE SIGNS OF MEMORY LOSS. BUT WHY WOULD SOMEONE WANT TO KNOW IF THEY WERE GOING TO GET ALZHEIMER'S, WHEN THERE'S NO WAY TO STOP IT'S PROGRESSION? RICHMAN SAYS IT ALLOWS PEOPLE TO PLAN.

"So while they are able to make long term plans whether that's care related or end of life related it allow the person who has the diagnosis to be able to do that."

AND THERE'S A BROADER REASON TOO. RESEARCHERS COULD LOOK AT PATIENTS AT EARLIER STAGES IN THEIR DISEASE.

"How great would it be if we were able to do that early on and then get those people engaged whether that's part of a research study about a possible drug treatment or some other treatment that would just give us more information in the end for all those people that are yet to be diagnosed." IT'S AN ANGUISH HEIDI SNOW KNOWS ALL TOO WELL. SHE LOST HER 24 YEAR OLD FIANCÉ MICHEL BREISTROFF IN THE CRASH OF TWA FLIGHT 800 ON. SHE WAITED FOR WEEKS IN JFK'S RAMADA PLAZA HOTEL FOR ANY INFORMATION.

"You had people who were quiet, you had people who crying, you had people who were screaming. i was just extremely sad. just really wanted to talk about him a lot. that hope is what i held onto."

SNOW'S HOPES WERE DASHED 5 WEEKS LATER WHEN THE AIRLINE CONFIRMED HER FIANCÉ WAS DEAD. IT WOULD TAKE 4 YEARS FOR THE NTSB TO WRAP UP ITS INVESTIGATION. THE CRASHES OF TWA FLIGHT 800 AND VALUE JET 592 IN THE EVERGLADES IN 1996 LED TO TOUGHER LAWS IN THE UNITED STATES TO PROTECT VICTIMS' FAMILIES. STARTING FIRST WITH THE FLOW OF INFORMATION.

"The family assistance act was passed that gives families the right to have briefings for the ntsb from the beginning of the investigation. Daily briefings. Sometimes as much as twice a day."

WHEN POSSIBLE FAMILIES ARE GRANTED ACCESS TO THE CRASH.

"It gives them rights to view the site when the plane is found, rights to view the accident site, it requires the airline to help them out financially and take care of them. it gives them access to personnel and information."

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY U.S. LAWS PROVIDE PROTECTION DURING THE AGONIZING GRIEVING PROCESS.

"The ntsb in their briefing rooms always has a separate room for the families so they don't have this horrible scene like today where you have the poor families being dragged away from the press."

FOR HEIDI SNOW IT'S IN THIS STATE OF LIMBO WHEN FAMILIES ARE MOST VULNERABLE.

"We're all in such a state of grief at that time. we want as much information as possible. and patience begins to wear thin as the days go on."

IT WAS JUST LAST MONTH THE U-S DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION SHOWED THAT IT MEANT BUSINESS ISSUING THE FIRST FINE UNDER THE 97 LAW TO ASIANA AIRLINES FOR FAILING TO HELP FAMILIES IN THE JULY CRASH IN SAN FRANCISCO. A HALF MILLION DOLLAR PENALTY WAS SLAPPED ON THE KOREAN AIRLINE FOR BEING TOO SLOW TO NOTIFY PASSENGERS FAMILIES AND FAILING TO ADEQUATELY PROVIDE A TELEPHONE NUMBER FOR ASSISTANCE. BARISTAS WITH GUNS-VO TC MON

WE HAVE A MUST SEE STORY AT NOON.

EMPLOYEES AT A WASHINGTON STATE ESPRESSO STAND ARE TAKING A STAND AGAINST CRIME.

AFTER A RASH OF ROBBERIES,

THE STAND'S OWNER IS ENCOURAGING HER BARISTAS TO BRING THEIR GUN TO WORK FOR PROTECTION.

GABE COHEN REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

BARISTAS WITH GUNS-PKG

"It's now time for us to step it up a little bit."

IT WAS BUSINESS AS USUAL AT JITTERZ JAVA TODAY. YOU WOULDN'T KNOW IT BUT THE COFFEE STAND HAS MADE A LITTLE CHANGE IN THE PAST MONTH.

"And I told all of them if they wanted to bring their guns, concealed weapons permits they are allowed to do that."

SARA CHAPEL IS NOW ENCOURAGING HER BARISTAS TO COME TO WORK ARMED.

"Its actually working out pretty good so far. "

RIGHT NOW THERE IS A GUN NEXT TO THE REGISTER.

"We trust in ourselves to react the way we need to if and when that time comes."

THIS INITIATIVE FOLLOWS TWO ROBBERIES IN FEBRUARY. LAST SUNDAY WAS THE FIRST ATTEMPTED ROBBERY WITH AN ARMED BARISTA ON DUTY. A MAN APPROACHED THE WINDOW HOLDING SOMETHING IN HIS HAND. THEN THE BARISTA REACTED.

"She noticed he had that could potentially be a weapon so she grabbed hers and her cell phone and backed away and called police which is exactly how we wanted it to happen.

CHAPEL MAKES SURE THERE IS AT LEAST ONE ARMED BARISTA WORKING EACH SHIFT.

"To feel more safe. I mean obviously when you have a gun you have it for that purpose. just to feel more safe and be able to take things into your own control. I feel like that is something that not only us but other baristas need to do as well." Return to index of stories...

WALMART GAS STATION-PKG

"This is a little bit unusual, it's not like a normal convenience store."

"WALMART TO GO" IS THE LATEST STORE MODEL CREATION FROM THE WORLD'S LARGEST RETAILER.

"It is very much a hybrid. I would consider it a food store that sells fuel."

IT HAS GAS AND SNACKS LIKE THE TYPICAL CONVENIENCE STORE. ALONG WITH QUICK ORDER MEALS. AND GROCERIES.

SOMETHING STORE MANAGER KELLY WILLIAMS SAYS SETS IT APART.

"You can come in and buy your soups here, your mexican food, laundry detergent, just about. paper products anything that you would find,:17 not a wide selection, but we have it here."

BUT IT'S STILL BENEFITING LOCAL BUSINESSES, TOO.

"We've partnered with Bentonville butcher, who is a local business and they're providing breakfast lunch and dinner options for the customers that are on the go."

AND WALMART REPS SAY THIS CONVENIENCE DOESN'T COME AT A COST TO CUSTOMERS.

"Customers are saying they are so excited and surprised that this is a smaller size box that offers convenience options but at the Walmart price." 3

SO FAR -- BENTONVILLE IS THE ONLY CITY SLATED TO HAVE A "WALMART TO GO."

"We're always testing new formats and new businesses and at this point we don't have plans to roll these out any further, however you never know, we test and learn all the time." Return to index of stories...

LENT MADNESS-PKG

SELECTION SUNDAY IS EVERY SUNDAY AT ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN HINGHAM, MASS.

THE BRACKETS ARE SET.

AND BEFORE FATHER TIM SCHENCK DREW UP THIS YEAR'S FIELD OF 32, EVERY ENTRY IN WAS ALREADY IN THE BIG DANCE.

AFTER ALL, THEY'RE SAINTS.

"Well, it's the saintly smackdown. We put 32 saints in a bracket and we have them go at it."

IT'S THE FIFTH ANNUAL LENT MADNESS, A HEAD-TO-HEAD ONLINE COMPETITION OF SAINTS IN THE 40 DAYS LEADING UP TO EASTER.

THE DRAW WILL EVENTUALLY GET WHITTLED DOWN TO A SAINTLY 16, A FAITHFUL FOUR, THEN ONE GOLDEN HALO WINNER.

"What Lent Madness really tries to do is to take them out of the stained glass, and out of the statues, and put flesh and blood on these incredible, inspiring heroes of the faith."

OUT OF THE STAINED GLASS, AND ACCESSIBLE ONLINE - FATHER TIM SAYS THE SITE LENTMADNESS.ORG GETS ABOUT 6000 VOTES A DAY ACROSS THE COUNTRY, TUESDAY, PITTING CINDERELLA AGAINST A TOP SEED, CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA AGAINST CATHERINE OF SIENNA.

A STRANGER TO COLLEGE HOOPS, BUT NOT TO THESE PEWS, PARISHIONER AMANDA BEACHUS HAD NEVER PUT PENCIL TO OFFICE POOL NCAA BRACKET BEFORE, MUCH LESS DURING LENT.

"It really lightens it up, and it's something to learn every day. And I enjoy that."

DEVOTION, LEARNING, FUN, BUT IS LENT MADNESS A TOUCH SACRILEGIOUS?

"Whoever wins, who cares, really? Right, it's a way to learn about these people and to be inspired by their lives and we can take our faith seriously, but we don't have to take ourselves too seriously and that's one of the main points of lent madness." Return to index of stories...
