FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Morning clouds and fog was slow to burn off, but the afternoon is turning out

a lot nicer with sunnier skies. Temperatures will warm to the 80s today, except

at the beaches, where Gulf seabreezes will hold afternoon highs to the 70s.

Low clouds and fog will liekly form again late tonight, and linger for several

hours after sunrise. But we expect sunshiny skies to return by Friday afternoon.

High pressure over the Western Atlantic will dominate our local pattern this

weekend. A few of our computer models suggest a little bit of tropical moisture

might reach Florida to mix in some clouds with our sunshine both Saturday

and Sunday. But we do not anticipate any significant rains this weekend. Return to index of stories...

DRONES HACKING PHONES-PKG

"So I can see three devices, or three mobile phones down below. And so we're collecting data about at least those three people."

THAT'S A HACKER - USING TECHNOLOGY PAIRED WITH A DRONE TO GRAB YOUR CELL PHONE INFORMATION FROM PEOPLE BELOW.

THIS TECHNOLOGY HAS BEEN USED ON CELL PHONES AND LAPTOPS.

ONE DAY, IT COULD BE INSTALLED IN LARGER AIRCRAFT THINK HELICOPTERS OR SMALL PLANES.

HE CAN ALSO SEE YOUR USERNAMES, PASSWORDS, CREDIT CARD INFORMATION AND GET THIS: IN SOME CASES, YOUR HOME ADDRESS.

"So somebody who was walking around the park, that's most likely their house. One of these houses here."

THE TECH ON THE DRONE IS CALLED SNOOPY. WE TOOK SNOOPY OUT FOR A SPIN ON THE STREETS OF LONDON.

"It'll fly within a relative close distance to a person with a phone tucked safely in their pocket, and if they've left their wi-fi on, which most people do in my experience, their phone will very noisily be shouting out the name of every network it's ever connected to. They'll be shouting out, Starbucks are you there?"

SO YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF BY TURNING OFF YOUR WI-FI. BUT IF YOU DON'T, SNOOPY CAN TRICK YOUR PHONE AND SEND BACK A SIGNAL PRETENDING TO BE THE NETWORK THE PHONE IS LOOKING FOR.

THEN THE DRONE CAN INTERCEPT EVERYTHING THE PHONE SENDS AND RECEIVES.

"Your phone is looking for Starbucks, and I pretend to be Starbucks. Your phone connects to me and then I can see all of your traffic, and see your passwords and things like that."

WE TESTED IT OUT WITH SOME DUMMY ACCOUNTS WE CREATED:

"And we can see here - logging into yahoo dot com. So Yahoo Mail, and I created an account, Angela Smith, and there's the user name, and her password is abc12. There's Amazon. Here's Amazon credentials, and also for Paypal. So Paypal email address, user name."

AND WILKINSON HACKED HIS OWN FACEBOOK ACCOUNT, TO DEMONSTRATE WHAT THAT WOULD LOOK LIKE:

"So let's pick on my own Facebook account. So I can just say, fetch Facebook profile, and from there I can do something like, fetch all Facebook friends.

WILKINSON IS AN "ETHICAL HACKER" -- HE BUILT THE SNOOPY DRONE TO HIGHLIGHT INSECURITIES IN SMART DEVICES. SOME OF THE THINGS SNOOPY CAN DO, LIKE STEAL USERNAMES AND PASSWORDS, ARE ILLEGAL.

OTHER FEATURES, LIKE TRACKING LOCATION DATA, WOULD PROBABLY NOT BREAK ANY U-S LAWS.

"If the technology got in the hands of criminals or bad hackers, which it may have done, there's all kinds of things they could do: at the most basic level they can track people thru space and time - say okay, this person's at this location at this time."

IN A WORLD WHERE DRONES FLY AND TECH ENABLEs THEM TO POTENTIALLY SPY - IT'S MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER TO PROTECT YOUR DATA.

A Spinal fracture - IT SURE SOUNDS PAINFUL - IT occur in nearly 700 thousand patients each year.

IMAGINE BREAKING A BONE FROM SOMETHING AS TRIVIAL AS A SNEEZE- IT CAN AND DOES HAPPEN- TO MOSTLY OLDER ADULTS WITH OSTEOPOROSIS.

DR. PAUL FUCHS/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

:21 Patients with osteoporosis they can have a minor trauma- Maybe they sit down vigorously on a sofa, or step off of a curb, maybe they didn't see the bottom of a step, they're carrying a heavy bag of groceries and they can sustain a fracture to parts of the spine.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Different than a high velocity break- frail, brittle bones don't require much force to hit their breaking point. Most times it's the back that takes the brunt- in the form of a compression fracture.

DR. PAUL FUCHS/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

1:15 You think of maybe a piece of Styrofoam and you press down on it that's what happens to the bone. It's loss of integrity throughout the bone, a loss of stability of the bone, that's what causes the fracture.

The pain typically occurs near the break itself, Most commonly near the waistline, MID-CHEST OR LOWER BACK. PEOPLE FIND IT GETS WORSE STANDING OR SITTING FOR A LONG PERIOD.

DR. PAUL FUCHS/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

3:11 They walk in with obvious pain, obvious difficulty standing, obvious difficulty sitting, any small maneuvers such as walking, you can see the patients in significant pain.

Age is the fueling force behind most compression fractures- but there's also a long list of diseases that increase fracture risk aS WELL AS medications that are known to increase risk. all reasons why it's important to monitor bone quality.

DR. PAUL FUCHS/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

6:43 We will order a bone density test to at least get a baseline quality of their bone and then commonly be able to start some type of treatment to improve the hardness of the bone or the density and hopefully prevent fractures.

CRACKING DOWN ON BONE HEALTH- IS THE BEST WAY TO KEEP YOUR SPINE STRONG. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST OPEN Return to index of stories...

KEVIN PAUL MARTYN LOVES HIS TOYOTA PRIUS FOR ITS FUEL ECONOMY AND HIGH-TECH FEEL, WHICH EXPLAINS WHY SO MANY PEOPLE WANT TO DRIVE HIS CAR.

"I get probably 10 times as many rental requests as I can fulfill. I end up turning them down all the time."

MARTYN IS ONE OF ABOUT 50 PEOPLE IN THE TAMPA BAY AREA CURRENTLY MAKING THEIR CARS AVAILABLE FOR RENT ON RELAYRIDES.COM, A PEER-TO-PEER WEBSITE BASED IN SAN FRANCISCO THAT PROMISES TO PUT YOUR IDLE CAR TO WORK FOR YOU.

"The average owner on Relayrides is making about $250 a month, with many other folks making upwards of $1,000 dollars a month."

CAR OWNERS POST PHOTOS AND OTHER DETAILS ON THE SITE AND NAME THEIR PRICE, WHICH AVERAGES $30 TO $50 A DAY, BUT CAN GO MUCH HIGHER.

RELAYRIDES HANDLES THE MONEY EXCHANGE, TAKING 25 PERCENT. FOR THAT YOU GET A MILLION DOLLAR LIABILITY POLICY WITH EACH RENTAL.

"In the worse case scenario or a minor fender bender, you're not on the hook and your insurance is not on the hook."

WHAT'S TO KEEP SOMEONE FROM TRASHING YOUR CAR? FIRST OF ALL, RENTERS HAVE TO HAVE GOOD DRIVING RECORDS AND BOTH THE RENTERS AND THE OWNERS GRADE EACH OTHER BASED ON COMMUNICATION, PUNCTUALITY AND CLEANLINESS.

"And you've had no problem with the condition it's in when it comes back?"

"I've never had any problem except it being cleaner."

"No problem there."

"No problem at all."

TO KEVIN, THE FACT THAT HE'S BEING LESS WASTEFUL BY PUTTING HIS CAR TO USE MORE OF THE TIME IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE MONEY.

"Services like this are a step down the road we need to start traveling down, towards using resources more efficiently and having a better relationship with the natural environment." Return to index of stories...
