FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

We're on track to see a warm and mainly sunny Friday across Southwest Florida as temperature soar into the mid 80s through the afternoon.

Coastal communities will stay a few points lower with temps there peaking around 80 degrees.

A few stray showers may pop up during the heat of the day, but these will primarily be over the interior and close to the Lake.

Expect a very warm and mild evening with temperatures making a slow decent overnight, bottoming out in the mid 60s by early Saturday morning.

Look for some areas of fog to develop early Saturday, which will give way to some low clouds and only partial sunshine by the afternoon. Despite the extra cloud cover tomorrow, temperatures should easily climb into the low to mid 80s.

Rain will stay pretty scarce through the weekend with the exception of a few widely scattered inland showers on Saturday.

Clouds will be on the increase Monday as moisture flows our way from the Gulf of Mexico ahead of the next cool front that's scheduled to arrive on Tuesday.

The front will bring in some scattered showers late Monday into Tuesday followed by a modest cool down by Wednesday; highs temps should only warm into the upper 70s while morning lows drop to the mid 50s by Thursday morning. Return to index of stories...

MOVE OVER SODA- THE BUZZ FOR TODAY'S TEEN HAS SHIFTED GEARS. OVER THE PAST DECADE CONSUMPTION OF ENERGY DRINKS AND SWEETENED COFFEE CONCOCTIONS HAS DOUBLED. THE TREND IS NOT EXCITING DOCTORS.

TWO-SHOT

DR. JULIA FASHNER/FAMILY PRACTITIONER

RUNS:

:29 It says it has 120 milligrams of caffeine-per container. And this is what would be twice as much as found in a soda size.

IT'S THE CAFFEINE KIDS MAY BE CRAVING, BUT IT'S ALSO WHAT HAS EXPERTS CONCERNED.

DR. JULIA FASHNER/FAMILY PRACTITIONER

RUNS:

1:35 The issue really is they have smaller a body size than adults and so the caffeine will have more milligrams in their body system for how much they weigh. And this will have more safety concerns and more negative side effects for those children or adolescence than for any adult.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

The shift in preference may be a result of the growing perception of soda as being linked to obesity. While young people may not guzzle them like they would a soda, they may not have to- some coffee and energy drinks have up to four times the caffeine of an equal amount of soda. Only manufacturers aren't required to reveal it.

DR. JULIA FASHNER/FAMILY PRACTITIONER

RUNS:

3:44 It's not branded to soda and it's not branded as anything in the food industry. So the FDA has no regulatory power over it. And it's sitting right next to the can of soda, it's sitting right next to the sports drinks.

THE APPEAL TO KIDS MAYBE MARKETING, FLAVOR OR THE BRIEF BOOST THEY OFFER- EITHER WAY, THE DOWNSIDE MAY BE A BUZZ KILL. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

THERE IS A BRAND NEW WARNING ABOUT A DANGEROUS NEW STREET DRUG.

IT'S CALLED "PHEN-AZ-EPAM."

IT WAS DEVELOPED IN RUSSIA BUT GAINING POPULARITY IN THE U-S.

SEVERAL DEATHS HAVE ALREADY BEEN REPORTED IN DALLAS.

SCOTT GORDON REPORTS FIRST AT FOUR. Return to index of stories...

NEW DRUG-PKG

IT HAPPENED THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 7TH.

18-YEAR-OLD WILLIAM BRAWLEY -- A SENIOR -- WAS HIT BY A CAR WHEN HE AND TWO OTHERS TRIED TO RUN ACROSS BUSY LOOP 820 AFTER HIS OWN CAR RAN OUT OF GAS.

AT FIRST, HIS PARENTS DIDN'T UNDERSTAND.

"There was a bridge right in front of them."

"They could have just crossed over the bridge. It was 50 yards in front of them."

BUT NOW, THE RESULTS OF TOXICOLOGY TESTS MAY PROVIDE A CLUE.

BRAWLEY HAD A RUSSIAN DRUG CALLED "PHENAZEPAM" IN HIS SYSTEM. AND IT LIKELY EFFECTED HIS JUDGMENT.

"It wasn't the cause of his death. He was hit by a car. But it could have played a role."

PHENAZEPAM ACTS AS A TRANQUILIZER -- MORE POWERFUL THAN XANAX OR VALIUM.

IT IS LEGALLY SOLD ONLINE AS TABLETS, PILLS OR POWDER, SOMETIMES IN COLORFUL PACKAGING.

"It's scary, if they can order it online and you can take enough of it to kill you. They're worried about marijuana, but this is the demon right here."

IN TARRANT COUNTY, DRUG AGENTS ARE ALARMED.

THE MEDICAL EXAMINER SAYS PHENAZEPAM MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO 9 RECENT DEATHS -- 4 OF THEM IN JUST THE PAST 3 MONTHS.

IT WAS ALSO AMONG THE DRUGS FOUND IN MICHAEL SCHMIDT.

HE WAS THE DALLAS LAWYER WHO CALLED POLICE TO HIS CONDO IN JANUARY, AND THEN SHOT AT ARRIVING OFFICERS BEFORE THEY SHOT AND KILLED HIM.

WILLIAM BRAWLEY'S PARENTS HOPE OTHERS LEARN FROM ALL THIS.

"I just couldn't believe it. I don't want somebody else to lose their child."

"It took a big part of our lives. Our whole family. And we miss him." Return to index of stories...
