NEW! Return to index of stories...

FIRST WX-WX ANI BOX

emperatures were held a bit below forecast levels this afternoon around Southwest Florida, as a disturbance in the upper levels of the atmosphere crosses Florida and even brings light rain and drizzle with it.

The best chance for rain as we head into the evening will be north of the Caloosahatchee River, in Charlotte, DeSoto and Glades Counties. Isolated sprinkles could fall elsewhere in Southwest Florida as well.

Friday will be another mostly cloudy day and even though the forecast model guidance is not picking up on it, we will have to allow for a day like Thursday, with some light rain, sprinkles and drizzle possible in some of the cloud cover.

A cold front will pass through Florida this weekend, which will bring scattered showers to Southwest Florida on Saturday. The front clears the region by Sunday, allowing for the second half of the weekend to turn out drier.

A nice stretch of weather will ensue heading into the first half of next week, with mostly to partly sunny sky conditions. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

BREEZY WITH MORE CLOUDS

It is a cool morning across Southwest Florida, but warmer weather is on the way today. Winds will come from the east, turning east-southeasterly at 10-15 mph with gusts near 20 mph. While it won't be as windy as yesterday, it will still be rather breezy. With more of that east to southeasterly turn on the winds, we will warm up today. Afternoon highs are headed to near 80 degrees. With more humidity coming into play we can't rule out a very spotty shower popping up this afternoon. Overnight, we'll see plenty of clouds and we won't be as cool. Expect low temperatures Friday morning to bottom out in the mid 60s with lower 60s inland.

For tomorrow, we'll have cloudy skies and even a few showers showing up by evening.

A cold front pressing its way into Southwest Florida will give scattered showers for Saturday into Sunday. Some of the latest computer guidance suggests that the rain may taper off by Sunday afternoon.so it's possible that the end of the weekend might turn out to be rain-free. AS THE END OF THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2014 DRAWS TO A CLOSE, STOCKS HAVE FAILED TO DELIVER RETURNS FOR INVESTORS YEAR TO DATE.

NICK CHLUMSKY IS HERE FROM THE NOLTE WEALTH MANAGEMENT GROUP TO TELL US WHETHER YOU SHOULD BE INVESTING IN STOCKS WITHIN YOUR RETIREMENT PORTFOLIO.

NICK? Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO-PLASMA CG

· So the short answer is yes. Now how much of your portfolio should be in stocks? Well, that depends. It depends on your appetite for risk, your investment objective, and your time horizon. But what we do know is that stocks have offered investors more opportunity to hedge inflation and accumulate wealth than most other asset classes including bonds.

· And I would argue that as low as interest rates are right now, that you should have a larger percentage of equities in your portfolio than you did maybe five or ten years ago. And the reason for that is that fixed income investments are not yielding enough to generate a sustainable retirement income for most folks. Additionally, as interest rates continue to climb higher, the value of your fixed income will tend to fall in value.

· So we do think that equities or stocks should play a role in your portfolio. History has shown us that fixed income holdings alone have not done a good job of outpacing inflation much less building wealth. And in the zero-interest rate environment we find ourselves in right now will make it difficult for fixed income investors to maintain the manner in which they have become accustomed to living. Additionally, those investors whose primary goal is to outpace inflation are more likely to outlive their assets.

· So how much of your portfolio should be in stocks? Well, the first step in any investment-planning process is defining your goals and how much risk you are willing to accept. Next, you need to determine if your primary investment objective is generating income, growing the portfolio, or a combination of growth and income. Once you have completed this evaluation, you and your financial advisor can weigh the risk that accompanies owning particular stocks.

· When building the stock portion of your portfolio, remember that a properly diversified equity portfolio should include a minimum of 20 to 30 stocks and have representations from at least six to eight different sectors. No more than 20% of the total portfolio value should be in any one sector and no more than 10% should be in any one stock. Additionally, a minimum of 3% to 4% of the total portfolio value should be in each security.

· Last, try to emulate the techniques of great investors like Warren Buffet and John Templeton by selecting good quality companies with solid prospects for future growth. Accumulate shares of stock over several weeks, months, or years according to a disciplined, regular schedule. And patiently hold shares monitoring the company's progress and selling only if something materially negative happens to a company.

· Following a disciplined investment plan and maintaining strict stock picking criteria and diversification guidelines will significantly improve your performance when investing in the stock market. Return to index of stories...

"Wanna go back to the swings?"

ZACH HAS AUTISM. AND ACCORDING TO NEW DATA FROM THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL - HE IS ONE OF A SHARPLY INCREASING NUMBER OF KIDS IDENTIFIED AS HAVING AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER.

"We estimate that 1 in 68 children have been identified with an autism spectrum disorder in multiple communities across the U.S."

THE REVIEW OF SCHOOL AND MEDICAL RECORDS REPRESENTS A 30-PERCENT INCREASE FROM SIMILAR DATA TWO YEARS AGO.

THERE ARE BETTER DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS AND GREATER AWARENESS. BUT NO ONE CLEAR REASON FOR THE RISE.

"We have got to do a lot more research and we've got to develop a national strategy to understand these numbers -- what's causing it, what's behind them, and why the prevalence is so high."

SOME EXPERTS WONDER IF THE CASES IDENTIFIED IN THE NEW REPORT REFLECT THE TRUE PREVALENCE OF AUTISM.

"Do they actually have a true autism spectrum disorder, or do they have other conditions that are impacting their social behavior and manifesting with some sort of repetitive behaviors or restricted activities?"

THE C-D-C REPORT FINDS MOST CHILDREN ARE DIAGNOSED AFTER AGE 4. ALTHOUGH IT CAN BE IDENTIFIED MUCH SOONER.

ZACH WAS DIAGNOSED AT AGE 2.

HIS MOTHER, JENNIFER, ECHOES WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY: EARLY DIAGNOSIS IS CRUCIAL BECAUSE KIDS HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF IMPROVING WHEN THERAPIES BEGIN AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.

"To me, it made all the difference in the world. the services that he was able to access through early intervention. he had over 20 hours of services coming into the home."

HEALTH NEWS FOR WOMEN.

HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY IS A PERSONAL CHOICE - ONE CURRENTLY REGAINING FAVOR, BY SOME WOMEN WHO WISH TO SOFTEN THE AFFECTS OF MENOPAUSE.

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY HAS HAD AN ON-AGAIN, OFF-AGAIN RELATIONSHIP WITH FEMALE HORMONE REPLACEMENT. USED TO COMBAT THE SIDE AFFECTS OF MENOPAUSE, DOCTORS AND WOMEN, WANT TO BE SURE IT'S SAFE.

DR. MALA SINGH/FAMILY PRACTITIONER

RUNS:

:01 Well it's gone back to where it was initially before the big study, Women's Health Study, it is acceptable now. If you want good quality of life, that's one of the options for you if you're really being affected by it.

THIS TIME AROUND, DOCTORS ARE PROCEEDING WITH CAUTION. STUDIES FIND THE BEST RISK RATIO IS when hormone replacement IS started in women under 59 years old or within 10 years of menopause. THE FOCUS IS ON SAFETY FIRST- SCREENING PATIENTS WHO ARE AT LOW RISK FOR COMPLICATIONS.

DR. MALA SINGH/FAMILY PRACTITIONER

RUNS:

10:38 I would say talk to your primary care doctors talk to your obgyn because everyone is different, everyone is an individual, everyone has a different medical history. So this is not something for everybody it has to be very individualized.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

In keeping with this individual approach- some women are taking it a step further- opting to personalize treatment. Using custom-mixed hormones that are chemically identical to those your body produces.

DR. MALA SINGH/FAMILY PRACTITIONER

RUNS:

11:49 I would order a panel of labs; all the estrogen, progesterone, prolactin, testosterone levels and then I would do bio-identical hormones. Those are creams. And what's great about the creams is you can just modify them yourself. When you use the cream you use them on your wrist and patients realize ok I feel this is a little too much for me and they can cut down it on themselves.

BIOIDENTICALS ARE PLANT-BASED BUT COMMERCIALLY PROCESSED. WHILE THERE'S NO EVIDENCE THEY ARE ANY MORE EFFECTIVE, MORE WOMEN ARE SEEKING THEM OUT.

DR. MALA SINGH/FAMILY PRACTITIONER

RUNS:

12:46 It's a general trend. People don't want medication, they want more natural things and the reaction, the side affects so they prefer the bio-identical.

HRT IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR WOMEN WITH: ACTIVE OR PAST BREAST OR ENDOMETRIAL CANCER, HISTORY OF BLOOD CLOTS OR STROKE, OR LIVER DISEASE. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER.
