FIRST WEATHER-ANIBOX STC

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

CLOUDS AND SHOWERS

Temperatures were held a bit below forecast levels this afternoon around Southwest Florida, as a disturbance in the upper levels of the atmosphere crosses Florida and even brings light rain and drizzle with it.

The best chance for rain as we head into the evening will be north of the Caloosahatchee River, in Charlotte, DeSoto and Glades Counties. Isolated sprinkles could fall elsewhere in Southwest Florida as well.

Friday will be another mostly cloudy day and even though the forecast model guidance is not picking up on it, we will have to allow for a day like Thursday, with some light rain, sprinkles and drizzle possible in some of the cloud cover.

A cold front will pass through Florida this weekend, which will bring scattered showers to Southwest Florida on Saturday. The front clears the region by Sunday, allowing for the second half of the weekend to turn out drier.

A nice stretch of weather will ensue heading into the first half of next week, with mostly to partly sunny sky conditions. Return to index of stories...

THEY'RE LOOKING FOR 90 PEOPLE--

STILL MISSING NEARLY A WEEK AFTER DEVASTATING MUDSLIDE.

NATS

Search crews describe it as a "swamp" - a hazardous mixture of trees,

propane, and remains of homes.

The mud so thick in areas - volunteers can't get victims out even when they

find them.

12.03.45 "You can't look at photographs and understand it/ WHAT WE'RE UP

AGAINST/ It's unreal."

Still - the emotions aren't lost

Today - the local fire chief said every body found - brings a new round of

grief.

"Things kind of gets sober out there. It gets really quiet for a few minutes

. You can almost hear a pin drop."

For families - the discovery comes with heartache and relief.

Dayn Brunner and his brothers spent 5 days searching for their sister Summer

.

"We got her she was found today"

Found - crushed in a car, under the collapsed hillside.

Search crews called the family - so Summer's brothers could bring her home.

"knowing it was my son that extracted her from the vehicle and held her and

cried for her, for the entire family gave me a big sense of relief."

There is little relief for Mac McPhersen.

His wife of 45 years - Linda - is now gone

He's haunted by that moment he saw the wall of mud caving in.

"Horrendous noise. I looked over my shoulder and all the trees were going

like this. The noise kept getting louder and louder." Return to index of stories...

15-YEAR OLD ZACH DOES NOT SPEAK AND USES SIMPLE SIGNS TO COMMUNICATE WITH HIS MOTHER.

"Wanna go back to the swings?"

ZACH HAS AUTISM.

AND ACCORDING TO NEW DATA FROM THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL --

HE IS ONE OF A SHARPLY INCREASING NUMBER OF KIDS IDENTIFIED AS HAVING AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER.

"We estimate that 1 in 68 children have been identified with an autism spectrum disorder."

THE REVIEW OF SCHOOL AND MEDICAL RECORDS SHOWS A 30-PERCENT INCREASE FROM SIMILAR DATA TWO YEARS AGO.

THERE ARE BETTER DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS AND GREATER AWARENESS --

BUT NO ONE CLEAR REASON FOR THE RISE.

"We have got to do a lot more research and we've got to develop a national strategy to understand these numbers -- what's causing it, what's behind them, and why the prevalence is so high."

SOME EXPERTS WONDER IF CASES IDENTIFIED IN THE NEW REPORT REFLECT THE TRUE PREVALENCE OF AUTISM.

"Do they actually have a true autism spectrum disorder, or do they have other conditions that are impacting their social behavior and manifesting with some sort of repetitive behaviors or restricted activities?"

THE C-D-C REPORT FINDS MOST CHILDREN ARE DIAGNOSED AFTER AGE 4.

THOUGH IT CAN BE IDENTIFIED MUCH SOONER.

ZACH WAS DIAGNOSED AT AGE 2.

HIS MOTHER ECHOES WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY --

EARLY DIAGNOSIS IS CRUCIAL BECAUSE KIDS HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF IMPROVING WHEN THERAPIES BEGIN AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.

"To me, it made all the difference in the world. the services that he was able to access through early intervention."
