ON A STRETCHER, HIDING HIS FACE WITH HIS FEET COVERED IN BLOOD - ONLY NBC-2 WAS THERE TO CATCH THE END OF A BIZARRE POLICE CHASE.

Shawn Marlowe/Sea Breeze Pool Services/3:14 "first time i've seen anything like this."

SHAWN MARLOWE HAS BEEN IN THE POOL BUSINESS FOR 20 YEARS.

THURSDAY MORNING - HE WAS THE FIRST ONE TO SPOT THE N-C-H PATIENT SPRINTING ACROSS GULFSHORE BOULEVARD.

Shawn Marlowe/11:26:51 "gotta look out for all of the joggers, walkers, bikers and this one came out looking nothing like the rest out of no where, this guy comes in a patients gown, on backwards, running covering himself up."

MARLOW FLAGGED DOWN NAPLES POLICE.

BY THEN - THE PATIENT WAS ALREADY ON THE BEACH.

THAT'S WHERE JENNY MALDEN AND HER FAMILY SAW THE MAN RUNNING.

Jenny Malden/Visiting Naples/11:29:31 "all of a sudden, i just saw this guy in a hospital gown, holding a towel around his waist, he had bandages around his arms and a hospital band."

AFTER SWIMMING MORE THAN 100 YARDS OUT INTO THE GULF - POLICE SAY THE PATIENT WAS WAVING FOR HELP.

EVENTUALLY - HE GAVE UP "WILLINGLY" AND THEY PULLED HIM ONTO THEIR BOAT.

Jenny Malden/11:31:35 "as he was getting on the boat, they noticed he was butt naked, so glad he was way out in the ocean and we didn't have to see that."

NAPLES POLICE AND FIREFIGHTERS LOADED HIM OFF AT THE GORDON RIVER BOAT RAMP - CAPPING OFF A BEACH DAY LIKE NO OTHER.

Shawn Marlowe/11:28:00 "it didn't look like anything he hadn't done before except the fact that he was in a patients robe backwards, running barefoot."

Jenny Malden/11:31:03 "it was kind of fun, it was def. entertainment." Return to index of stories...

Rain.

Long waits.

Even worse lines.

Sot Leah moldonado, Cape Coral resident

They were horrendously long."

November 4, 2012-

An election that most lee county residents can't forget.

Sot Leah

I didn't vote at all because of it."

The right to vote- stripped.

At the center of it all- lee county supervisor of elections Sharon Harrington.

Sot Sharon Harrington, Lee County Supervisor of Elections

It was a combination of different things that happened."

That was the same year that supervisor Sharon Harrington gave back

more than a million dollars of excess budget funds.

Now- she's looking to improve the process.

Already Adding 6 more early voting locations for the next general election.

Sot Sharon

"We'll have a whole lot more early voting sites for them, more

equipment in the polling locations."

She's also asking commissioners for money back.

The total cost is estimated at $1.3 million for 100 new ballot

scanners, 785 iPads, routers and other accessories.

Poll workers will use an app on the iPads called 'know ink' to scan

voters drivers license and confirm information.

Sot Sharon

we'll be

able to do it in a. Matter of minutes."

Harrington says the best option is still a mail ballot.

For the first time ever,

Lee County is paying for voters to request and submit ballots by mail.

For Aprils republican primary in the 19th congressional district-

nearly 20 thousand requests have already been received.

Sot Sharon

They don't even have to worry about finding a stamp to mail that ballot back."

Especially for Aprils election.

This letter sent to voters says due to short notice and time

constraints some of our polling locations may not be available on

particular dates.

while April might not be perfect,

If the iPads are approved they'll be implemented by Augusts election.

Sot Sharon

It should be a much, much better experience." Return to index of stories...

FL VOTER PURGE-OC

THE STATE OF FLORIDA WILL STOP REMOVING NON-CITIZENS FROM THE VOTER ROLLS.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT TODAY.

THE SO-CALLED VOTER PURGE WILL BE DELAYED UNTIL NEXT YEAR.

OFFICIALS DECIDED TO WAIT BECAUSE OF CHANGES WITH THE FEDERAL DATABASE USED TO FIND POSSIBLE INELIGIBLE VOTERS.

MATT - ANOTHER THING TO ASK GOV. SCOTT --

AP-FL--Florida Voters

Fla. election chief halts voter purge for 2014

Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida's top election official is halting for now a plan to remove non-U.S. citizens from the state's voter rolls.

Secretary of State Ken Detzner on Thursday informed Florida's election supervisors that he is delaying the effort until next year because of changes underway with a federal database the state is using to help identify potential ineligible voters.

Gov. Rick Scott first pushed to have the state look for non-U.S. citizens on the rolls before the 2012 election.

But many election supervisors, however, did not wind up removing anyone after questions arose about the law and the accuracy of the list.

Detzner in his letter to supervisors said the changes in the federal database will help enhance the reliability of finding potential ineligible voters. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

CLOUDS AND SHOWERS

Temperatures were held a bit below forecast levels this afternoon around Southwest Florida, as a disturbance in the upper levels of the atmosphere crosses Florida and even brings light rain and drizzle with it.

The best chance for rain as we head into the evening will be north of the Caloosahatchee River, in Charlotte, DeSoto and Glades Counties. Isolated sprinkles could fall elsewhere in Southwest Florida as well.

Friday will be another mostly cloudy day and even though the forecast model guidance is not picking up on it, we will have to allow for a day like Thursday, with some light rain, sprinkles and drizzle possible in some of the cloud cover.

A cold front will pass through Florida this weekend, which will bring scattered showers to Southwest Florida on Saturday. The front clears the region by Sunday, allowing for the second half of the weekend to turn out drier.

A nice stretch of weather will ensue heading into the first half of next week, with mostly to partly sunny sky conditions.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...
