THE SEARCH FOR MALAYSIA FLIGHT 370 TAKES A NEW DIRECTION THIS MORNING.

NEW INFORMATION OVERNIGHT IS SHIFTING THE FOCUS AWAY FROM THE AREA WHERE

THEY'VE SEARCHED FOR DAYS -- AND MOVING IT CLOSER TO AUSTRALIA.

THIS MEANS SEARCH CREWS WILL BE ABLE TO GET TO THE AREA FASTER AND SPEND SIGNIFICANTLY MORE TIME IN THE SKIES LOOKING FOR DEBRIS.

TAHMAN BRADLEY HAS THE DETAILS. Return to index of stories...

MISSING PLANE-PKG

PKG SCRIPT:

A new clue in the search for Flight 370.

Authorities now think the 777 was flying faster than previously thought and

using more fuel, reducing the distance it could have traveled.

SOT Martin Dolan

"THE NEW INFORMATION IS BASED ON CONTINUING ANALYSIS OF RADAR DATA."

So the search area has shifted about 700 miles northeast to a new part of

the Indian Ocean.

SOT Hussein

"THIS WORK IS ON-GOING, AND WE CAN EXPECT FURTHER REFINEMENTS./SEARCHES

MUST BE CONDUCTED ON THE BEST INFORMATION AVAILABLE AT THE TIME."

New satellite images from Thailand show objects floating in the water.

Is it debris from the plane?

In the past week nearly a half dozen counties have provided images of

suspected debris.

For the families of the 239 people onboard -- who've been gathering at

vigils -- it's an agonizing wait.

SO T Sara Weeks

"WE WANT TO SAY JUST HOW APPALLED WE ARE WITH THE WAY THIS WHOLE THING HAS

BEEN HANDLED. IT'S JUST BEEN A NIGHTMARE."

Another high tech U.S. sub hunter -- the Navy P-8 -- was ordered to the

region. as teams fan out again now that the weather has improved.

Naval ships are towing a wing-shaped device to listen for sound from the

plane's black boxes.

But time is running out.

SOT Paul Nelson

"WHEN THE BATTERIES GO DEAD, THE PINGER SIGNAL GOES AWAY. THE BLACK BOXES

STILL HAVE DATA THAT CAN BE RECOVERED AND ALL THAT FLIGHT INFORMATION CAN

STILL BE OBTAINED. BUT YOU WILL NOT HAVE A WAY ACOUSTICALLY TO FIND THOSE

BOXES." Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

CLOUDY AND BREEZY WITH SCATTERED SHOWERS

It is not as cool this morning as our temperatures are in the lower 60s for most of Southwest Florida to get our Friday started. Skies are mostly cloudy and will stay that way through the day. The models are now picking up on the chance for showers that we have been mentioning for today. You can expect scattered showers mainly during the afternoon and evening. Winds will be coming from the east at 10 - 15 mph with gusts of 20 - 25 mph. Afternoon high temperatures will reach the upper 70s to lower 80s.

A cold front is headed through Southwest Florida this weekend. This means we will continue to see a good amount of cloud cover tomorrow along with scattered showers. The on Sunday, drier air follows this front and we will even get to see some sunshine.

Sunny weather will stay with us through the first half of next week with highs in the lower 80s. Return to index of stories...

THE GOVERNMENT SAYS SIX MILLION PEOPLE HAVE SIGNED UP FOR INSURANCE UNDER THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT.

"We're seeing an increase, particularly in the past couple weeks, of people under 35 enrolling."

BUT NOT AS MANY AS INSURERS NEED TO BALANCE THE COST OF COVERING OLDER, SICKER AMERICANS.

SO FAR, A QUARTER ARE UNDER 35. THE GOVERNMENT'S GOAL WAS 38 PERCENT.

SOME ARE CONSIDERING WHETHER TO JUST PAY THE PENALTY:

"$95, okay, but then if it goes to 1 percent, who knows."

NOW THE ADMINISTRATION SAYS PEOPLE WHO START - BUT DON'T FINISH BY MONDAY'S DEADLINE - WON'T BE PENALIZED.

Ohio:39-:45

"The dates are the dates, and the law is the law. The President doesn't have the ability to change the law whenever he wants."

South Carolina:46-:53

"Delay can be good but at some point and time you've got to pull the trigger and get this thing going."

"We find that a lot of folks like to begin the process, check out their options, talk to their family and then come back and complete it."

"I think that will actually not solve the problem but make it worse because now you're going to say, 'Well I guess I don't really have to hit it this weekend.'"

PRICES VARY BUT MANY APPLICANTS ARE GETTING SUBSIDIES - SO THE GOVERNMENT PAYS PART OF THEIR PREMIUM.

NEW GOVERNMENT FINDINGS PROVIDE A STUNNING LOOK AT THE GROWING NUMBER OF AMERICAN FAMILIES LIVING WITH AUTISM.

AUTISM FINDINGS-PKG

Six year old Ava Cristo starts her day at Reed Academy, a New Jersey school for children with autism.

NATS Teacher to Ava "let's get your work out."

Today a startling CDC survey of 11 states finds there's been a dramatic jump in the number of children like Ava.

The CDC finds autism diagnoses have been steadily rising over the last decade to 1 in 68 children.

Boys are 5 times more likely than girls to have autism: 1 in 42 boys versus 1 in 189 girls.

NATS Ava and teacher in classroom "good job"

What may be the most troubling fact: No one really knows what's behind the increase. Experts believe SOME of these numbers may be due to better detection of cases that might have been previously overlooked.

SOT Dr. Coleen Boyle, CDC:

Physicians, health care providers, educators, are clearly getting better at um identifying autism as well as the case definition, you know 'what is autism?' is really evolving

The news comes as no surprise to Kim Cristo whose daughter Ava was diagnosed with autism at 18 months.

NO PARENT WANTS TO HEAR YOUR CHILD HAS AUTISM BUT YOU CAN'T BE AFRAID OF THE "A" WORD. / 022008 IT'S SO IMPORTANT NOT TO BE AFRAID OF THE WORD BUT TO START FIGHTING AS SOON AS YOU HEAR THAT FOR YOUR CHILD.

Advocates say today's report points to a critical need for early screening. Most children are diagnosed after age four-- too late, experts say-- when autism disorders can be diagnosed as early as age two.

SOT LIZ FELD, AUTISM SPEAKS, PRESIDENT: EARLY INTERVENTION LEADS TO A BETTER OUTCOME SO FOR US TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO CARE, AND COVERAGE FOR THAT CARE, FOR ANY CHILD WHO'S DIAGNOSED WITH AUTISM, WE KNOW WE CAN MAKE A WORLD, A LIFETIME OF DIFFERENCE IN THAT PERSON'S LIFE.

For families like Ava's, triumphs come in simple acts.

KIM 022845 THE OTHER NIGHT SHE WANTED PIZZA FOR DINNER. SHE SAID, I WANT PIZZA. WOW! SHE TOLD ME WHAT SHE WANTED. THAT WAS SUCH A MILESTONE.

NATS hitting piano keys/Ava throws her arms up: Hooray!

Kim Cristo hopes this new report leads to more awareness and better services for families living with Autism.

KIM PEOPLE LOOK AT IT VERY NEGATIVELY AND I THINK THAT WE NEED TO CHANGE THE WAY WE LOOK AT IT Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

HEALTH MATTERS-ON CAM

HIGH TECH IMAGING IS VITAL WHEN IT COMES TO DIAGNOSING EVERYTHING FROM DISEASES TO SPINE ISSUES.

BUT THE M-R-I IS A SOURCE OF ANXIETY FOR MANY PEOPLE WHO REALLY

NEED IT.

IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS AMY OSHIER SHOWS US HOW IT PAYS TO BE 'OPEN' TO MRI. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

PKG:

IT MAY OFFER THE ULTIMATE VIEW OF THE HUMAN BODY- THE MRI

USES A MAGNETIC FIELD AND RADIO WAVE PULSES TO MAKE PICTURES OF

ORGANS AND STRUCTURES. USED TO FIND PROBLEMS SUCH AS TUMORS,

BLEEDING, BLOOD VESSEL DISEASES OR INFECTION. GETTING THE BEST

IMAGES CAME AT A COST.

DR. CORY DUFFEK/NEURORADIOLOGIST

RUNS:

:15 Traditionally we had open MRI's and we have our closed MRI'S. The closed MRI's

are very claustrophobic but gave us the highest image quality and the best images. The

open MRI's was a much more patient-friendly environment but we couldn't get very

good images from it. And we've always had that problem

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Now it's problem solved: the newest technology offers the high field magnet within an

open setting. The images are high quality, with all the detail doctors are looking for. And

the comfort is a pleaser for patients.

UNLIKE AN XRAY WHICH SNAPS A QUICK IMAGE, THE MRI IS TIME-CONSUMING.

BEING IN A CLOSED TUBE FOR UP TO AN HOUR CAN BE UNSETTLING FOR

NOT ONLY THE CLAUSTROPHOBIC, BUT CHILDREN AND PEOPLE WHO ARE

EXTREMELY OVERWEIGHT.

PETE KOUBA/MRI TECHNOLOGIST

RUNS:

:41 We have a table limit of 650 pounds, where in the past that was unheard of. So now

we can accommodate and image people that have never been imaged before.

ANOTHER PATIENT POPULATION ARE THOSE WITH BACK PAIN, THIS SET UP

HELPS GET THEM THROUGH TESTING.

DR. CORY DUFFEK/NEURORADIOLOGIST

RUNS:

3:02 We can add more pillows under their back, we can raise their head a little bit.

If they can't lay on their back they can lay on their side. And so we have much more

options for patient positioning because we have more room to position the patient.

BEING OPEN TO MRI- IS HELPING PEOPLE GET THE TREATMENT THEY

DESERVE. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...
