THE SOUND.

THE SMOKE.

THE SPOTLIGHTS.

EVERYTHING ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA BAND "TOUCH" MAY SEEM TRADITIONAL AT FIRST.

"I thought there was a band on stage."

BUT WHERE ARE THE INSTRUMENTS?

"they were just sitting out there with their iPads on stands. It's amazing."

THE IDEA OF MAKING MUSIC ON A TABLET CAME UP FOUR YEARS AGO WHEN TWO U-S-F PROFESSORS STARTED BRAINSTORMING.

"when the iPad came out - we thought immediately this is something that music teachers should know how to do."

AND WITH MORE AND MORE CLASSROOMS EQUIPPED WITH TABLETS -- THEY CAN BE THE PRELUDE TO PRICEY INSTRUMENTS.

"if you level the playing field. Now everyone can play."

RIGHT NOW -- PROFESSORS AND DOCTORAL STUDENTS MAKE UP THE QUINTET.

AND JUST LIKE ANYTHING --

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.

"once I picked the iPad up for the first time as an instrument - it was like learning a whole new instrument."

BUT THESE HIGHLY TRAINED MUSICIANS UNDERSTAND THAT THERE'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A REAL GUITAR AND AN APP.

FOR THEM -- IT'S A DIFFERENT WAY OF ENGAGING WITH MUSIC. BY GETTING BACK TO THE BASICS.

"being able to hear changes, to be able to hear where chords go, to be able to pick out melodies. And if that's the basics, then - really - music can be made on anything."

AND THE BAND IS FINDING THAT APPLIES TO EVERYONE.

ESPECIALLY THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS.

"I found that the autistic kids that we have. They just go right at it. A lot of them fixate on patterns."

PLANE SEARCH SHIFTS-ON CAM-TRX

NEW TONIGHT: THE SEARCH AREA FOR THE MISSING MALAYSIAN AIRLINER IS SHIFTING TO A WHOLE NEW AREA.

NEW ANALYSIS OF RADAR DATA FOUND THE PLAN TRAVELING FASTER THAN PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT.

NBC'S IAN WILLIAMS HAS THE NEW DETAILS ON THIS DEVELOPING STORY. Return to index of stories...

PLANE SEARCH SHIFTS-PKG

Thursday was the first day searching in a new area some 700 miles north of where they had been scouring for debris.

Now the move was a result of the re-examination of radar evidence, radar readings which suggested flight M-H-370 might have been flying faster and using more fuel than they originally thought.

That meant, they think, that it crashed somewhat earlier than they estimated.

Now the first day search in this new area has resulted in what may be quite important leads.

Five aircraft spotted what they called multiple colored objects in the sea.

They came back this evening here to Perth, they had photographs which are being examined overnight.

"If we can determine that these objects that we've found are in fact wreckage or debris, that will provide key information to come up with the datum of where the aircraft has possibly gone down."

Now the authorities here are cautioning that we shouldn't come to any conclusions about this until they've been collected by a ship and we can ascertain exactly what they are because we've had so many false leads before.

So a Chinese ship which is already in that area has been tasked with going and trying to find this debris, if it is debris, and collecting it on Saturday.

REPORTER CLOSE:

THIS IS AN IMPORTANT LEAD AND TOMORROW WE SHOULD KNOW PRECISELY WHAT IT IS THAT'S BEEN SPOTTED OUT THERE TODAY.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

RAIN CHANCES FOR THE WEEKEND

After some sun earlier Friday, clouds return to the area, with a few widely scattered showers north. Scattered showers will be possible this evening, with temps falling into the 70s.

Rain chances will increase overnight as our next storm system gets closer to the area, with lows only in the upper 60s to low 70s.

Showers will continue into Saturday. Expect mostly cloudy skies all day long, with periods of rain in the morning. Scattered showers may also redevelop later in the afternoon time frame. Highs on Saturday will be in the low 80s.

Better weather is in store for Sunday. The cool front will clear the area early Sunday, with rapid clearing through the morning hours. We'll be left with plenty of sun, windy conditions and highs in the low 80s.

Next week looks great weather-wise. Wall-to-wall sunshine is expected for Monday & Tuesday, with highs in the low 80s.

A few clouds will return to the area for Wednesday & Thursday, with slightly warmer highs in the mid 80s.

The quiet and dry weather will likely continue into the end of next week, with temps holding in the mid 80s. Return to index of stories...
