WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

After quite the soggy Saturday, we're in store for some much nicer weather today in the wake of a cool front that moved through during the overnight.

Temperatures will be noticeably cooler, and the air will feel more crisp; expect our temperatures to only peak in the mid to upper 70s during the afternoon.

Sunshine will also be prevalent throughout the day, and combined with the cooler temps and lower humidity, it's truly going to be a sensational Sunday.

Winds will also be a factor in our weather today as a stiff northerly breeze gusts up to 20-30 mph.

Due to the strong northerly winds, a small craft advisory is posted for the coastal waters through the morning hours.

Tonight will be the coolest night of the next seven as temperatures drop to the low to mid 50s under a mostly clear sky.

The rest of our week is shaping up nicely; it'll be very spring like and quite warm with plenty of sunshine and highs in the mid 80s.

Our weather will also stay very dry through the next seven days. Return to index of stories...

WHAT CAUSES AUTISM-OC

WE'VE BEEN REPORTING THAT MORE CHILDREN THAN *EVER ARE BEING DIAGNOSED WITH AUTISM.

BUT THE QUESTION REMAINS. WHAT CAUSES THE DISORDER?

A NEW STUDY SHEDS SOME LIGHT. Return to index of stories...

WHAT CAUSES AUTISM-PKG

NEW STATISTICS FROM THE C-D-C SHOW ONE OUT OF EVERY 68 CHILDREN HAS AUTISM.

THOSE ARE THE HIGHEST NUMBERS IN HISTORY. A TREND DOCTOR JEANETTE RAMER HAS

SEEN WITH HER OWN EYES.

"That undoubtedly is true because I've been in practice quite a few years

and when I started in developmental practice it was quoted as one in 10,000.

It was uncommon to see a child with autism. Clearly over the years it's

become more and more common."

BUT WHY? RESEARCHERS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA SAN DIEGO SAY THEY'RE

GETTING CLOSER TO AN ANSWER THEY STUDIED THE BRAINS OF CHILDREN WHO HAD

AUTISM. AND FOUND PATCHES OF ABNORMAL CELLS DEEP INSIDE. RESEARCHERS SAY

THAT'S SOMETHING THAT CAN ONLY HAPPEN DURING THE SECOND AND THIRD TRIMESTERS

OF PREGNANCY. DOCTOR RAMER SAYS THE STUDY PROVES WHAT MANY HAVE SUSPECTED.

"It really is a neurological disorder, not a behavioral disorder created by

families by parenting. Therefore I think this is important in that sense

that it does reinforce that idea that it's an inborn difference."

RESEARCHERS SAY THEY NEED TO DO SOME MORE DIGGING TO FIND OUT *WHY* THOSE

CELLS ARE IRREGULAR. DOCTOR RAMER BELIEVES IT'S A COMBINATION OF GENETIC AND

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS.

"There may be children who have several sets of genes that add risk and that

they're exposed to something prenatally or something occurs prenatally that

then turns on autism." Return to index of stories...

THIS WEEK MARKS ONE YEAR SINCE A DUNBAR RESIDENT WAS SHOT TO DEATH IN A QUIET CAPE CORAL NEIGHBORHOOD.

TO THIS POINT. ALL LEADS HAVE BEEN EXHAUSTED.

BUT DETECTIVES ARE HOPEFUL THAT ONE NEW TIP COULD KEEP THIS CASE FROM GOING COLD.

TRISH ROUTTE WITH CRIME STOPPERS. HAS THE STORY. Return to index of stories...

CRIME STOPPERS-PKG

What started off as a quiet spring afternoon in a relatively quiet Cape Coral neighborhood

quickly became quite the opposite, as the piercing sound of gunfire shot through the air,

leaving a young man clinging to life.

Lt. Tony Sizemore - "Our officers got there and discovered a crime scene very unusual in

general for Cape Coral, but especially in broad daylight."

When police arrived at the SW 7th

lying in the driveway, the victim of a spray of bullets aimed at the Fort Myers resident.

Despite efforts to save his life, Warburton died on the scene - while his killer sped away

as a free man.

Trish Routte: Detectives in this case believe the murder was targeted. Therefore, there

are going to be people in the know. They key to providing closure in this case is for

someone to step forward, do the right thing and tell police what they know.

Lt. Sizemore - "There were some witness accounts of a black SUV, possibly a Cadillac

Escalade, leaving the scene at a high rate of speed toward Skyline Boulevard immediately

following the sounds of multiple gunshots."

But beyond that, detectives have very little to go on, other than this sketch of the man

they believe was the shooter. Warburton was a Dunbar resident, visiting an acquaintance

in the Cape when he was shot. But not much is known about that relationship, possible

motives or what led up to this fatal tragedy.

Lt. Sizemore - "If you know this victim, if you know some of the issues he may have had

or the circles that he ran in, anything like that would be helpful."

Since the murder happened in such an unusual location, police say nearby residents may

have been in shock at first, making them hesitant to provide an account of what occurred

that afternoon.

Place home, they found 25 year old Andre Warburton

Lt. Sizemore - "There's a couple of different reasons why people don't come forward.

They may be afraid or, number 2, it's a traumatic thing to see that or hear that or know

that it happened."

But at the end of the day, it's never too late to call - and remain completely anonymous.

It's going to take information from the public - people who either knew Warburton or

saw unusual activity right before or after the crime - that will ultimately bring justice to a

grieving family.

Lt. Sizemore - "If you're on the fence of whether to call, think of that family. Nobody

should have to go through that."

For Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, I'm Trish Routte. Return to index of stories...
