THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE MISSING HAS DROPPED SUBSTANTIALLY SINCE A MASSIVE LANDSLIDE IN SNOHOMISH COUNTY, WASHINGTON, MORE THAN A WEEK AGO.

THE DEATH TOLL HAS RISEN TO 21 PEOPLE, AND OFFICIALS STILL CONSIDER 30 OTHERS UNACCOUNTED FOR.

AS THE SEARCH FOR VICTIMS CONTINUES, ANDREW SPENCER REPORTS CREWS HAVE ANOTHER CONCERN. Return to index of stories...

WA: MUDSLIDE UPDATE-PKG

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

CREWS SEARCHING THE DEVASTATION NEAR OSO, WASHINGTON, ARE ALL TOO AWARE OF THE CONTAMINANTS IN THE SOIL.

"We got drain fields, sewers. We got all the household products that we all have in our homes. Those have been spilled."

THE U-S ARMY HAS SET UP A DECONTAMINATION STATION WHERE CREWS CLEAN OFF.

IT'S NOT JUST THEM OFFICIALS ARE WORRIED ABOUT.

THERE'S A POTENTIAL IMPACT FOR THE REST OF THE COUNTY.

"We're worried about dysentery. We're worried about tetanus. We're worried about contamination. The last thing we want to do is take any of these contaminants out of here and take them into town, take them back to our families."

EVEN SEARCH DOGS GET A THOROUGH WASHING AT THE END OF THE DAY.

A TATTERED AMERICAN FLAG FOUND IN THE DEBRIS HANGS NEAR ONE OF THE SITES WHERE CREWS CONTINUE TO WORK THROUGH THE DIRT, THE MUD, AND THE RUBBLE.

RAIN HAS BEEN A NEAR-CONSTANT PROBLEM, SOAKING THE DEBRIS FIELD AND, IN SOME AREAS, FORMING PONDS WHICH ARE TOO LARGE FOR SEARCHERS TO WORK THROUGH.

"They waiting for them to drain naturally before they can get into those areas. However, they were able to make progress in other areas of the debris field."

THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE UNACCOUNTED FOR ISN'T NEARLY AS HIGH AS IT WAS A WEEK AGO, BUT IT STILL LEAVES SOME FAMILIES WITHOUT ANY ANSWERS.

"The mission statement right now is look for that miracle, rescue any possible survivors, and also to find loved ones to give them confidence."

GOVERNOR JAY INSLEE SAYS CREWS WILL BE IN ACTIVE RESCUE MODE AS LONG AS THERE IS ANY POSSIBILITY OF FINDING SURVIVORS.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"A dry stretch of weather"

It was a beautiful end to the last weekend of March, and it looks like a nice stretch of dry and sunny weather will continue through the week. The forecast will feature a few cool mornings, followed by warming temperatures.

Our morning will start off unseasonably cool by late March standards. So far, temperatures have settled into the upper 40s across our far northern counties, with lower to middle 50s along the urban corridor. A disturbance to our west will keep high clouds across our skies for much of the day, which will filter out the sunshine from time to time. The breeze will be much lighter today, but will continue to send in slightly drier air across the region. This will keep our humidity values quite comfortable through the afternoon as temperatures return to the lower half of the 80s.

Mostly clear skies will prevail tonight, however temperatures won't be quite as cool by morning. Expect thermometer readings to range from the lower 50s north to 60° along our coastal zones.

High pressure will remain in control of our weather for Tuesday and beyond, keeping a tranquil pattern in place. It also means veering winds to the east and southeast, which will aid in a quick warm up by mid week. Expect mostly to partly sunny skies through the end of the week with mainly dry weather. Daytime highs will also be rather toasty, as some locations make a run for the upper 80s by Thursday. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

A TRIP TO THE MOVIE THEATER HAS BECOME AN INCREASINGLY RARE EVENT FOR MANY PEOPLE. ESPECIALLY ONES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN.

TARA NORTHCUTT HAS THREE SONS.

SARAH BROWN HAS THREE DAUGHTERS.

BOTH WOMEN LIVE ACTIVE LIVES. BUT ONE THING THEY DON'T DO WITH THEIR KIDS MUCH THESE DAYS. IS GO TO THE MOVIES.

"We don't take the kids very often and we kind of save that for special occasions."

TARA SAYS IT'S NOT JUST THE SELECTION OF MOVIES THAT KEEPS HER HOME, BUT THE PRICE.

"50-60 dollars, that's a lot of money."

TODAY, BASIC TICKET PRICES ARE OFTEN 8 BUCKS FOR KIDS, 10 TO 15 FOR ADULTS. AND THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE A VISIT TO THE SNACK BAR. SARAH SAYS TIMES HAVE CHANGED SINCE SHE WAS A KID.

"And we'd go to dinner and we'd go to the movies and we'd have popcorn and we'd have treats but you can't do that now. You could easily drop 75 bucks at the movies.

AND THE MOTION PICTURE INDUSTRY IS NOTICING. WHILE TICKET PRICES KEEP GOING UP. ATTENDANCE AT THE MULTIPLEX IS SLIPPING. FEWER PEOPLE ARE BUYING TICKETS.MORE FAMILIES CHOOSING TO WATCH MOVIES AT HOME.

"I think it's more comfortable for them to be at home, able to eat their pizza, do what they want to do, ask questions about the movie."

ONE IDEA IS TO GET ALL THE THEATRE CHAINS TO DROP THEIR PRICES ON A PARTICULAR DAY, THE ENTIRE DAY, BUT WOULD THAT BE ENOUGH TO GET FAMILIES BACK TO THE MOVIES?

"For these special movies that are marketed to kids, if they were half price or everyone pays kids prices, or I don't know.

Yeah."

TICKET SALES HAVE DROPPED NEARLY 11 PERCENT SINCE 2004, THAT ACCORDING TO THE MOTION PICTURE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA. AND WHILE CHEAPER TICKETS MIGHT LURE MORE FAMILIES BACK TO THE THEATER. YOU STILL HAVE TO GIVE THEM SOMETHING THEY WANT TO WATCH.

But for the most part there are very few movies out that we really want to take our kids to see. Return to index of stories...
