OBJECTS SPOTTED IN THE SEARCH AREA HAVE SO FAR TURNED OUT TO BE UNRELATED TO THE AIRCRAFT.

NBC'S IAN WILLIAMS HAS THE LATEST FROM PERTH, AUSTRALIA. Return to index of stories...

MISSING PLANE-PKG

The international search effort continues to expand.

There were ten aircraft in the search area today and no less than eleven ships but any wreckage from MH370 remains frustratingly elusive.

There have been plenty of sightings of objects down there in the ocean and ships have now collected some of that, but it's turned out to be fishing rubbish or other flotsam.

"We find ourselves in difficult position and I repeat: the question families principally want answered is the question we simply do not have the answer to - namely, where their loved ones are and where is MH370."

The U-S pinger locator will be out in the search area by the end of the week we think, but it's unlikely to be deployed searching for the black box until they can massively narrow the search area.

And they can really only do that when they find some wreckage.

Now the Prime Minister of Australia, Tony Abbott, was out in Perth today reviewing the search efforts and he was putting a brave face on things.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"A dry stretch of weather"

It was a beautiful end to the last weekend of March, and it looks like a nice stretch of dry and sunny weather will continue through the week. The forecast will feature a few cool mornings, followed by warming temperatures.

Our morning will start off unseasonably cool by late March standards. So far, temperatures have settled into the upper 40s across our far northern counties, with lower to middle 50s along the urban corridor. A disturbance to our west will keep high clouds across our skies for much of the day, which will filter out the sunshine from time to time. The breeze will be much lighter today, but will continue to send in slightly drier air across the region. This will keep our humidity values quite comfortable through the afternoon as temperatures return to the lower half of the 80s.

Mostly clear skies will prevail tonight, however temperatures won't be quite as cool by morning. Expect thermometer readings to range from the lower 50s north to 60° along our coastal zones.

High pressure will remain in control of our weather for Tuesday and beyond, keeping a tranquil pattern in place. It also means veering winds to the east and southeast, which will aid in a quick warm up by mid week. Expect mostly to partly sunny skies through the end of the week with mainly dry weather. Daytime highs will also be rather toasty, as some locations make a run for the upper 80s by Thursday. Return to index of stories...

And to speed things along, the White House now says as long as you start

"One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking that they know their rights."

ATTORNEY BOB REHKEMPER IS ONE OF THE CREATORS OF THE SMARTPHONE APPLICATION.

HE SAYS IT LISTS BASIC LEGAL RIGHTS, HAS A BLOOD ALCOHOL CALCULATOR, AND AN EMERGENCY "OH CRAP" BUTTON FOR WHEN A PERSON IS BEING STOPPED.

HIT IT AND GET ADVICE LIKE, "THE LESS YOU SAY THE BETTER," "BE POLITE," AND "LAWYER UP."

But wait, there's more. When you hit that "Oh Crap" button, it'll turn on your phone's voice recorder and that will record any conversation you have with an officer and send the audio file to a secure server.

THE AUDIO IS POTENTIALLY VALUABLE EVIDENCE, IF SOMEONE WANTS TO FIGHT A CHARGE.

"That initial interaction is documented and is recorded so it's not a matter of what somebody remembers, or he said, she said."

BUT THE LINN COUNTY SHERIFF HAS CONCERNS ABOUT THIS APP.

"It's cute, if nothing else."

HE SAYS DURING TRAFFIC STOPS, USING THE PROGRAM COULD PUT APPROACHING OFFICERS ON EDGE SEEING AS THEY MIGHT MISTAKE A PHONE FOR A WEAPON.

SHERIFF GARDNER ALSO WORRIED THE APP COULD BE USED FOR THE WRONG REASONS.

"If it stops you from being intoxicated and driving, I'm certainly in favor of it. If it tells you how to be intoxicated and drive, and get away with it, there may be some concern there."

CREATORS ESTIMATE THE APP HAS BEEN DOWNLOADED 4-THOUSAND TIMES IN THE YEAR IT'S BEEN OUT.

THEY SAY THEY DON'T WANT USERS DRINKING AND DRIVING, BUT HOPE THEY'LL USE THE APP TO STAY INFORMED IN DIFFICULT SITUATIONS.

"People end up in positions and their rights become very important to them, to their family members, to their children.

That's the purpose of this app, to understand what they do, and what they don't have to do." Return to index of stories...
