THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

NICE AND WARM WEEK AHEAD

Quiet weather returns for several days this week. The forecast tonight calls for partly cloudy skies becoming mostly clear by the morning. Temperatures will drop through the 60's this evening and land in the mid and upper 50's along the coast with mid and lower 50's inland. No rain tonight.

Tomorrow's weather looks mainly sunny and warm. Highs on Tuesday should get to the lower 80s' and skies will feature a few passing clouds during the day. Again tomorrow, no rain is expected.

The extended outlook calls for more warm and quiet weather through the end of the week. The daytime highs should be in the mid 80's each day and overnight lows will be in the mid 60's. A trend toward cloudier skies will be noted this coming weekend, but rain chances stay pretty low through Sunday. The long-range outlook calls for rain next Monday. Return to index of stories...

NOT BECAUSE SHE WAS OVERWEIGHT. IT WAS AN ATTEMPT TO TREAT HER UNCONTROLLED TYPE 2 DIABETES.

"I was game for anything to get rid of diabetes."

MARLA'S SURGEONS AT THE CLEVELAND CLINIC ENROLLED HER IN A WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY STUDY FOR PATIENTS WHO - LIKE MARLA - HAD TRIED AND FAILED TO CONTROL THEIR BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS.

COMPARED TO THOSE ON WEIGHT-LOSS MEDICATIONS, PATIENTS WHO UNDERWENT BARIATRIC SURGERY WERE MUCH MORE LIKELY TO LOSE A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF WEIGHT AND GO OFF ALL DIABETES MEDICATION -- EVEN THREE YEARS POST-OP.

"Of the patients who had surgery, more than 90% were insulin free."

DR. PHILIP SCHAUER AND COLLEAGUES ALSO FOUND SURGICAL PATIENTS WERE ABLE TO REDUCE THEIR NEED FOR DRUGS FOR HIGH CHOLESTEROL AND BLOOD PRESSURE.

"Surgery is the only known treatment that can actually put a patient into long-term remission."

BARIATRIC SURGERY COSTS ABOUT 50-THOUSAND DOLLARS AND IS OFTEN NOT COVERED BY INSURANCE.

OUTSIDE EXPERTS SAY SURGERY SHOULD ONLY BE CONSIDERED AS A LAST RESORT FOR PATIENTS WHO HAVE EXHAUSTED ALL OTHER OPTIONS OF CONTROLLING THEIR BLOOD SUGAR.

"This is a very good study by a very good group, and it reaffirms that the improvements are durable, but I don't

think that this is the cure for type II diabetes."

MARLA LOST 80 POUNDS, HAS MAINTAINED NORMAL BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS.. AND HAS ENOUGH ENERGY TO LOOK AFTER HER NEW GRANDDAUGHTER.

THE HONEYMOON IS OVER.

LESS THAN 3 MONTHS AGO, MARY BARRA became THE FIRST WOMAN TO LEAD AN AMERICAN AUTOMAKER.

NOW, SHE'S HEADED TO CAPITOL HILL FOR HER FIRST BIG TEST AS C-E-O.

TOUGH QUESTIONS ABOUT THE RECALL OF 2-POINT-6 MILLION VEHICLES BECAUSE OF PROBLEMS WITH THE IGNITION SYSTEM.

THOSE PROBLEMS. LINKED TO AT LEAST 13 FATALITIES.

P-R EXPERTS SAY SO FAR, BARRA HAS OWNED IT.

"She's done every possible thing she can do in terms of taking very aggressive, proactive actions."

"So far so good. She has attacked the problems. She's been candid."

BARRA HAS LAUNCHED AN INTERNAL INVESTIGATION.

SHE WROTE A LETTER TO EMPLOYEES, SAYING, "WE WILL HOLD OURSELVES ACCOUNTABLE."

THERE WAS A VIDEO APOLOGY.

". and terrible things happened."

A PRESS CONFERENCE.

A WEBSITE AND CALL CENTER.

AND A NEW EXECUTIVE IN CHARGE OF SAFETY.

FOR MARY BARRA, THE STAKES ARE HIGH.

"This is going to be the most important appearance thus far in her CEOhood and how she handles this tragedy is going to tell an awful lot about her legacy and her reputation."

BUT IT COULD TURN INTO A PLUS.

"If she delivers. there's no doubt that positive things are going to take place, including minimizing potential recalls, increasing customer satisfaction.increased revenue, increased sales."

BUT IN THE AUTO INDUSTRY, PERCEPTION IS KEY.

G-M IS TOUTING PHOTO CONTEST WINNERS ONLINE.BUT SCROLL DOWN JUST A LITTLE, AND YOU'LL SEE THIS. CUSTOMERS STILL OUTRAGED ABOUT THE RECALL.

"If it goes into a longer term scenario, it probably will hurt the brand."

A LOT WILL DEPEND ON WHETHER OR NOT G-M ACCEPTS LIABILITY.

TECHNICALLY, THE AUTOMAKER ISN'T RESPONSIBLE FOR ACCIDENTS THAT HAPPENED BEFORE IT WENT BANKRUPT IN 2009.

BUT some EXPERTS SAY THAT WHAT G-M HAS TO DO, AND WHAT G-M SHOULD DO ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.

"If GM really wants to put the right foot forward, they need to accept total responsibility. Whether it was old GM, new GM, it's still GM on the building downtown Detroit."

CIVIL LAWSUITS HAVE BEEN FILED AND G-M IS FACING A FEDERAL CRIMINAL PROBE.

RIVAL TOYOTA FACED A SIMILAR INVESTIGATION AFTER ITS HUGE RECALL FOUR YEARS AGO.

BUT IT REACHED A DEAL WITH THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT AND AGREED TO PAY ONE-POINT-TWO BILLION DOLLARS.

IN GM'S CASE, IT HASN'T SAID YET IF IT WILL ACCEPT LIABILITY.

"The lawyers would be pressing her not to be as equitable as General Motors could be with these settlements. She has got to push back."

FOR BARRA, THIS TEST COULD DEFINE HER LEGACY. LESS THAN 100 DAYS INTO HER TENURE AS C-E-O. Return to index of stories...

.but it has a big part of Southern California really worried.

SOT teen girl

"I'M SCARED THAT IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN."

What's happened, again and again, is aftershocks.

Since Friday's 5.1 magnitude quake was centered in La Habra, just outside of Los Angeles, there have been more than 150 aftershocks in the area ranging from 1.0 to 4.1

Video showing customers running for cover at this ice cream parlor and the furniture swaying in this 5-year old's bedroom

has rattled nerves.

About a dozen homes have been roped off for further inspection.

NAT with the Keseloffs

Mike and Mickie Keseloff of Fullerton have some serious repair work ahead on their house. The Fire Department warned them that cracks in their chimney could cause it to collapse in the next quake.

SOT

Rehema Ellis: "DO YOU THINK ABOUT WHEN THAT COULD HAPPEN?"

Mickie Keseloff: "EVERY TIME WE FEEL A TREMOR."

Mike Keseloff: "YOU DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S THE."

Mickie Keseloff: "YEAH, YOU DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S THE ONE."

The horror of past quakes and unknown fault lines fuels present fears.

The deadly 1994 Northridge earthquake killed 57 people and caused more than 20-billion dollars in damage. It struck along what was then an "invisible" fault.

While the infamous San Andreas has long been considered the most dangerous fault line in Southern California, many experts now say a major quake on the Puente Hills fault could have far deadlier results. killing up to 10 times as many Californians. Return to index of stories...
