5:02 FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

Today's Weather Story

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA."A dry stretch of weather"

It was a beautiful end to the last weekend of March, and it looks like a nice stretch of dry and sunny weather will continue through the week. The forecast will feature a few cool mornings, followed by warming temperatures.

Our morning will start off unseasonably cool by late March standards. So far, temperatures have settled into the upper 40s across our far northern counties, with lower to middle 50s along the urban corridor. A disturbance to our west will keep high clouds across our skies for much of the day, which will filter out the sunshine from time to time. The breeze will be much lighter today, but will continue to send in slightly drier air across the region. This will keep our humidity values quite comfortable through the afternoon as temperatures return to the lower half of the 80s.

Mostly clear skies will prevail tonight, however temperatures won't be quite as cool by morning. Expect thermometer readings to range from the lower 50s north to 60° along our coastal zones.

High pressure will remain in control of our weather for Tuesday and beyond, keeping a tranquil pattern in place. It also means veering winds to the east and southeast, which will aid in a quick warm up by mid week. Expect mostly to partly sunny skies through the end of the week with mainly dry weather. Daytime highs will also be rather toasty, as some locations make a run for the upper 80s by Thursday. Return to index of stories...

IN THE BUSTLING HALLWAYS OF BETHEL MIDDLE SCHOOL. THERE'S A NEW CONCERN.

IT'S CALLED ABC ERASER CHALLENGE. KIDS RUBBING ERASERS UP AND DOWN THEIR ARM WHILE SAYING THE ALPHABET.

"Not just ABCDE but they;re coming up with words in between: A apple, B boy and so forth all the way to Z and then at the end they show their friends: what does it look like, how far did they go. How big is the mark?"

PRINCIPAL DEREK MUHAREM SAYS ABOUT A DOZEN BOYS AND GIRLS HAVE BEEN SEEN BY THE NURSE FOR INJURIES FROM THE CHALLENGE. IT'S ENOUGH OF A RED FLAG TO PROMPT HIM TO EMAIL THIS LETTER TO PARENTS.

ELISA VOLPATI HAS A SON AT BETHEL MIDDLE.

"I'm very glad the school makes up aware of things but on the other hand they have to edit what they're telling us and what the kids are actually hearing. Because the kids are getting emails just like the parents are obviously."

"You really have to guide them through making good decisions."

COUNSELOR AMANDA KIRK SAYS THE ERASER CHELLENGE IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF ADOLESCENTS PUSHING THE ENVELOPE.

"It is developmentally appropriate for teens to try things experiment and maybe take some risks which is why is so important for parents to be aware and to look for these things."

PEER PRESSURE IS ONE CONCERN. HEALTH IS ANOTHER.

"Because they're using erasers, and they're breaking the skin, sharing erasers with a friend. And then who know what's out there, blood on the eraser, you can get an infection that way."

ELISA VOLPATI SAYS WHILE SHE IS CONCERNED, SHE REALIZES IT'S ANOTHER PART OF RAISING A TEEN.

"Kids are experimenting. back when I was a kid we were doing those sort of things. Obviously it's just another one of those things we as parents have to watch out for." L/ Bethel, Connecticut:01

5:32 FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

SCRIPT:

LISA, A STAY-AT-HOME MOM, AND HER FRIEND ARMELLA AND ARMELLA'S SISTER ALIDA

ARE FIRST TIME FLIPPERS TRYING TO GET INTO THE GAME.

Rebecca: A lot of people would say you should never get into business with

friends or family.

ARMELLA DIORIO, FIRST TIME HOME FLIPPER: We did both.

AND THEY'RE HOPING THERE IS STILL MONEY TO BE MADE.

Armella: We definitely missed the heyday of really cheap housing, but then

we worried we would have trouble reselling it.

AFTER LOSING OUT ON SIX OTHER PROPERTIES IN BIDDING WARS, THEY BOUGHT THIS

MODEST THREE BEDROOM FOR $150,000.

Rebecca: And what did it look like when you pulled up?

Alida: It was awful. It was awful.

Armella: It was a dump. The kitchen floor was sinking in. You walked in

and you were kind of crooked. The yard was a jungle.

BETWEEN RENOVATIONS AND REAL ESTATE FEES, THEY PUT $60,000 INTO THE PROJECT,

FIGURING THINGS OUT AS THEY WENT.

Lisa: That looks like a standard.

Alida: It's 13 and a fourth by.

Lisa: Look how we sound, like we know what we're talking about.

THIS PAST NOVEMBER, THEY LISTED THE PROPERTY FOR $275,000.

BUT EVEN AFTER A SUCCESSFUL OPEN HOUSE, THEY STILL DON'T HAVE ANY OFFERS.

AND THAT LEADS THE WOMEN TO SERIOUSLY ASSESS THEIR FINANCES AND HOW LONG

THEY CAN KEEP THE HOUSE ON THE MARKET.

Armella: Are we still okay to hold until January?

Lisa: Yeah, I think we're okay to hold 'til January, just every time we, you

know, we have to always make a mortgage payment.

AS JANUARY CAME AND WENTTHE HOUSE SAT UNSOLD.

Armella: When we listed it, we had the same dream everyone has of selling in

in 30 days. It didn't happen quite that fast. Return to index of stories...
