SUNNY, WARM WEATHER CONTINUES

High pressure is solidly in control of the weather. Our skies will be mostly clear tonight and temperatures will drop to the lower 60's this evening.

The forecast for tomorrow looks good as skies stay mostly sunny during the day. High temperatures will rebound into the mid 80's on Wednesday afternoon and no rain is expected.

The extended outlook is also nice through the end of the week. You can look forward to a string of mostly sunny days and warm afternoon temperatures through the weekend. The only weather changes on the horizon this weekend will be an increase in clouds as another cold front approaches the area from the northwest. It looks like this next front will bring some rain to the area late Sunday and/or Monday. Most of the weekend forecast is still dry, but clouds will be more noticeable on Saturday and Sunday. MARY BARRA'S MESSAGE WAS-

G-M IS FIXING MILLIONS OF POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS IGNITION SWITCHES.

BUT LAWMAKERS DEMANDED TO KNOW HOW SO MANY HAZARDOUS CARS WERE SOLD FOR SO LONG-

AND THE DANGERS KEPT SECRET.

BARRA SAID G-M WILL *NOW* DO THE RIGHT THING.

MARY BARRA, G-M'S NEW CEO, FACED CONGRESS

AND THE HORRIFIC SERIES OF G-M CAR CRASHES. AT LEAST 31. 13 PEOPLE KILLED.

"My sincere apologies to everyone who has been affected by this recall…"

"Again you're relating specific incidents in our entire investigation you don't know? you don't know about that???

THE ISSUE IS BAD IGNITION SWITCHES. THAT CAN SUDDENLY TURN OFF SOME GM CARS' ENGINES, BRAKES AND AIR BAGS.

IN 2007 THE GOVERNMENT.NHTSA. LOOKED INTO AIR BAGS NOT DEPLOYING. BUT FAILED TO FIND THE SWITCH PROBLEM

BECAUSE G-M DID NOT HELP.

"Our ability to find defects also requires automakers to act in good faith."

THE COMPANY KNEW OF THE PROBLEM IN 2001, BUT DID NOT ISSUE A WARNING OR A RECALL. IN 2009, SARAH TRAUTWEIN DIED WHEN HER CHEVY COBALT CRASHED AND THE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. HER FAMILY IS FURIOUS.

"The only thing that matters to me now is getting these cars off the road, like yesterday."

IF DRIVERS DON'T USE HEAVY KEYCHAINS.

BARRA SAYS: NO NEED FOR URGENT RECALLS

"We've communicated broadly that the vehicle is safe to drive based on our engineering testing.

NEXT WEEK, REPLACEMENT SWITCHES WILL FINALLY BE READY FOR 2.6 MILLION RECALLED CARS.

BARRA SAID G-M WILL QUOTE "EXPLORE" VICTIMS GETTING COMPENSATION.

audio outcue: I'm Steve Handelsman, NBC News, Washington.
