DEVELOPING IN TEXAS THIS MORNING.

WE'RE LEARNING MORE ABOUT SPECIALIST IVAN LOPEZ, THE MAN AUTHORITIES SAY KILLED FOUR PEOPLE AND INJURED 16 OTHERS BEFORE TURNING THE GUN ON HIMSELF AT FORT HOOD IN TEXAS.

FORT HOOD SHOOTING-PKG

-REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

THE SPRAWLING ARMY BASE IN FORT HOOD TEXAS IS YET AGAIN THE SCENE OF A SHOOTING.

THIS TIME, AUTHORITIES SAY AN ARMY SPECIALIST KILLED THREE PEOPLE BEFORE TURNING HIS GUN ON HIMSELF.

16-OTHERS WERE WOUNDED.

THE BASE COMMANDER SAYS SPECIALIST IVAN LOPEZ OPENED FIRE IN ONE BUILDING, THEN CONTINUED FIRING WHILE DRIVING TO A SECOND BUILDING.

MILITARY POLICE CAUGHT UP TO HIM AS HE STARTED SHOOTING IN THAT SECOND BUILDING.

LIEUTENANT GENERAL MARK MILLEY SAYS LOPEZ TOOK HIS OWN LIFE WHEN ONE OF THE MILITARY POLICE OFFICERS CONFRONTED HIM.

"It was clearly heroic what she did at that moment in time, and she did her job, and she did exactly what we would expect of a United States Military Police"

IVAN LOPEZ HAD ONLY BEEN STATIONED AT FORT HOOD SINCE FEBRUARY, AND HAD PREVIOUSLY SERVED FOUR MONTHS IN IRAQ.

MILITARY OFFICIALS SAY LOPEZ WAS BEING TREATED FOR DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY, AND WAS BEING EVALUATED FOR POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER.

"Obviously, we are digging deep into his background, any criminal or psychiatric history, his experiences in combat."

NEIGHBORS TRIED TO CONSOLE LOPEZ'S WIFE.

"She was worried and she was crying, and she had a little girl with her, and I tried to console her and comfort her and let her know that everything was OK."

As far as I knew he was a nice guy guy. He always smiled and waved. And that's about it.

THE SHOOTING BEARS A SAD RESEMBLANCE TO THE 2009 MASS SHOOTING AT FORT HOOD. WHEN MAJOR NIDAL HASAN KILLED 13-PEOPLE. AND INJURED 32 OTHERS. HE'S NOW ON DEATH ROW.

SAM SWEENEY, NBC-2. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

SUNNY AND WARM

A beautiful day with plenty of sunshine is on the way for Southwest Florida today. We start the morning with temperatures in the upper 50s in the inland areas to the upper 60s at the coastline. You could see some patchy dense fog for your morning commute, especially in the inland areas. It will be another warm day with our afternoon high temperatures reaching into the mid 80s. Winds from the southeast will be around 10 - 15 mph with some higher gusts. Then we'll get a late afternoon sea breeze near the coastline. For tomorrow and into the weekend, we don't see any big changes in that pattern. By Sunday, there could be just a few more clouds coming into the mix.

There is another cold front headed toward Southwest Florida, but it won't be here until late Monday into Tuesday. That front will bring our next chance for rain, followed by a short-lived cool down. Return to index of stories...

MARIJUANA COOKIE DEATH-PKG

WHAT HAPPENED HERE ON THE FOURTH FLOOR OF THIS DENVER HOTEL, NOW THREE WEEKS AGO, STILL HAS BOTH INVESTIGATORS AND MEDICAL EXPERTS ASKING QUESTIONS.

NINETEEN YEAR OLD LEVI PONGI, AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT FROM THE REPUBLIC OF CONGO, WAS ON SPRING BREAK WITH THREE FRIENDS FROM SCHOOL IN WYOMING. ACCORDING TO AN AUTOPSY REPORT THE GROUP DECIDED TO TRY MARIJUANA COOKIES.

THAT REPORT SAYS PONGI ATE SOME AND STARTED ACTING ANGRY.

IT SAYS HE EVEN BEGAN PULLING THINGS OFF THE WALL.

HIS FRIENDS REPORTEDLY TRIED TO CALM HIM DOWN BUT PONGI JUMPED OUT OF BED, RAN TO THE BALCONY AND JUMPED OVER THE RAILING.

HE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE.

"It's not a typical toxidrome or a typical behavior related to ingesting marijuana or eating marijuana."

DOCTOR SCOTT BENTZ WORKS IN THE E-R AT PRESBYTERIAN ST. LUKE'S MEDICAL CENTER.

HE'S SEEN A FEW PATIENTS WITH ODD REACTIONS TO POT BUT HE SAYS PONGI BEHAVIOR DOESN'T FIT.

"Marijuana in its inhaled or ingested forms don't typical cause a loss of impulse control or erratic behavior."

THE AUTOPSY REPORT LISTS PONGI'S DEATH AS AN ACCIDENT BUT IT ALSO NAMES MARIJUANA INTOXICATION AS A SIGNIFICANT FACTOR TO THAT ACCIDENT.

THE MEDICAL EXAMINER DID FIND THE ACTIVE INGREDIENT IN MARIJUANA IN PONGI'S BLOOD, BUT THEN SAYS IF HE HAD A NEGATIVE REACTION HIS BEHAVIOR SHOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT.

'With editable marijuana we are seeing a total different toxidrome where people are coming in very very sedated or they are not breathing as well." Return to index of stories...

PRESIDENT OBAMA'S GOAL RIGHT NOW IS TO RAISE THE FEDERAL MINIMUM WAGE DRAMATICALLY.

NBC-2 WENT THROUGH THE MOST RECENT GOVERNMENT DATA TO PAINT A CLEAR PICTURE OF WHY PROPONENTS BELIEVE THE RAISE IS NECESSARY.

LETS START BACK IN 2007 - THE FEDERAL MINIMUM WAS RAISED TO 5-85 FROM 5-15.

IN 2009, IT WAS RAISED TO 7-25, AND THAT IS WHERE IT IS NOW.

NOW LOOK AT THE NUMBER IN FLORIDA.

THE 2006 MINIMUM WAGE WAS 6-40, 55-CENTS AHEAD OF NATIONAL RATE.

AND AS OF JANUARY FIRST THIS YEAR, THE FLORIDA MINIMUM WAS LOCKED IN AT 7-93 - STILL AHEAD OF THE FED.

THAT'S A LITTLE MORE THAN 7-THOUSAND DOLLARS *UNDER* THE POVERTY MARKER.

THE NUMBERS ARE STAGGERING.

ABOUT 46-MILLION PEOPLE ARE UNDER THE POVERTY LINE ACCORDING TO RECENT CENSUS DATA.

THAT'S 15-PERCENT OF THE U-S POPULATION.

"Nobody who works full time should be raising their family in povery. Right? If you're working, if you're responsible, you should be able to pay the rent. Pay the bills."

A NEW QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY POLL SUGGESTS THE PRESIDENT'S PLAN COULD BE GAINING SOME POPULARITY.

IT SHOWS HALF OF THE COUNTRY'S REGISTERED VOTERS WOULD SUPPORT A CANDIDATE BACKING THE WAGE HIKE.

YOU WONT FIND THAT SAME FEELING IN CONGRESS THOUGH.

WEATHER-WX WALL

Simply seeing eyes, having somebody look at you, even if it's a cartoon

character, draws a lot more attention

FOOD MARKETING RESEARCHER BRIAN WANSINK AND HIS TEAM LOOKED AT FIFTY

SEVEN DIFFERENT BOXES OF KIDS' CEREAL, AND WHEN THEY FOLLOWED THE *EYES* OF

TOUCAN SAM AND HIS BUDDIES. FIFTY ONE OF THE CHEERY CHARACTERS HAD EYES

ANGLED DOWNWARD. AIMED SQUARELY KID-HIGH. 48" AND UNDER.

SOT - BRIAN WANSINK/ Director, Cornell Food and Brand Lab

the trust level goes up about 18 percent if you make eye contact with

anything. This is even simply a picture on a boxbut also increases your

likelihood to want to purchase the cereal.

AS PART OF THE SAME STUDY, SCIENTISTS HANDED OUT TWO DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF

THE BOXES CONTAINING THIS ICONIC BREAKFAST TREAT TO COLLEGE STUDENTS AND

FOUND THAT THE STUDENTS REPORTED FEELING 28% MORE CONNECTED TO THIS

VERSION OF THE BOX'S RABBIT. THAN THIS ONE WITH HIS EYES AVERTED

WANSINK SAYS WHILE THE MASCOTS' LINGERING GAZES MAY BE A COINCIDENCE-- MOST

ARE DEPICTED STARING EXCITEDLY AT THEIR BOWL OF CEREAL-- THE EFFECT IS STILL

SHREDDING PAPERS-ON CAM

THE TAX DEADLINE IS LESS THAN TWO WEEKS AWAY.

FOR MANY PEOPLE THAT MEANS GOING THROUGH PILES OF PAPERWORK TO FILE YOUR TAXES.

BUT WHETHER YOU WAIT TILL THE LAST MINUTE. OR YOU'VE ALREADY DONE YOUR TAXES. THERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS WE ALL FACE.

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU KEEP YOUR FINANCIAL RECORDS?

AND WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WITH THAT OLD PAPERWORK?

BOB HANSEN HAS SOME ANSWERS. Return to index of stories...

SHREDDING PAPERS-PKG

A HOME SHREDDER SHOULD BE STANDARD EQUIPMENT FOR MOST OF US. INSTEAD OF THROWING AWAY FINANCIAL PAPERS. WE SHOULD DESTROY ANYTHING WITH PERSONAL

INFORMATION ON IT.

"I mean right now with identity theft the way it is, you really don't want to throw records in the trash. you want to do some type of proper disposal."

BUT AROUND TAX TIME. HOW LONG DO WE REALLY NEED TO KEEP THESE RECORD AROUND?

ATTORNEY GARY QUACKENBUSH SAYS WE TEND TO KEEP 'EM LONGER THAN WE HAVE TO.

"you should keep records at least 3 years, probably at the most six years. and if it's just your tax returns, i would keep them for as long as you have the ability to store them."

SO ACTUAL TAX RETURNS FOREVER. BUT YOU CAN FEED YOUR SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS INTO A 100 DOLLAR SHREDDER AFTER 3 TO 6 YEARS.

BUT WHAT IF YOUR COLLECTION OF PAPERWORK IS MORE THAN YOUR SHREDDER CAN HANDLE?

"There is nothing wrong with a home shredder. a lot of people just don't have the time to shred those 20, 30, 40 boxes they've been saving in the garage for years."

SO FOLKS LIKE GOODWILL ARE IN THE GROWING INDUSTRY OF DOCUMENT DESTRUCTION. THIS HIGHLY SECURE GOODWILL LOCATION IN SAN DIEGO EMPLOYES 20 PEOPLE, MOST WITH DISABILITIES, AND SHREDS MORE THAN 2-AND-A-HALF MILLION POUNDS OF COMMERCIAL AND PERSONAL DOCUMENTS EVERY YEAR.

"Everything you see these days has 10%, 20%, 50% recycled and that's what happens to it. it goes back out to the community and stays out of the landfill."

"Now most of this comes from government agencies, from hospitals and attorneys, but for six bucks a box, you can shred all the important papers you have sitting around the house."

THE SHREDDED DOCUMENTS STAY OUT OF THE LANDFILL AND INSTEAD ARE RECYCLED. YEARS OF TAX RECORDS, PHONE BILLS, RECEIPTS AND DOCUMENTS. FORMED INTO ANONYMOUS BALES. AND GIVEN A NEW LIFE. Return to index of stories...

JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY IS ALREADY A COMMON OPERATION, AND IN THE COMING YEARS CASES ARE EXPECTED TO SKYROCKET.

PKG:

MAYBE IT'S OUR DESIRE TO STAY YOUNG OR THE DISTASTE OF FEELING OLD.

EITHER WAY- THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF JOINT REPLACEMENT IS GOING DOWN.

DR. ED HUMBERT/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

2:59 I think the baby boomers want to stay very, very active. So they're kind of pushing

the age down.

AND THE TIME IS RIGHT FOR YOUNGER JOINT PATIENTS. UP TO NOW, PEOPLE

HAD TO WEIGH THEIR DISCOMFORT AGAINST HOW LONG THE JOINT MIGHT

LAST BEFORE ANOTHER SURGERY WAS NEEDED.

DR. ED HUMBERT/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

3:11 Thirty years ago they said 'well this may only last ten years' so people tried to

push it to their very, very last chance to do it.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

So why the change of heart? The driving force behind worn out joints is still the

same: arthritis. Fueled by injury, genetics or overuse- the main difference is the parts.

Technology has evolved to make artificial joints last longer.

DR. ED HUMBERT/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

3:47 We know the parts will last a little longer, so we're more likely to recommend it.

3:22 Patients are saying well if this can last me 30 years when I'm 50 years old at least

it's going to get me until I'm 80 or 85.

GROWING OLD WITHOUT WEARING OUT- IS KEEPING PATIENTS YOUNG AT

HEART.

DR. ED HUMBERT/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

3:34 And they have the ability to do fun exercise and play with kids and play golf and do

sports.

THE TAKEAWAY ON JOINT REPLACEMENT- IS LOWER AGE AND HIGHER

EXPECTATION. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...
