SHIPS INVESTIGATE SOUNDS HEARD IN PLANE SEARCH -TR

A CHINESE SEARCH VESSEL AND AUSTRALIAN NAVAL SHIP OCEAN SHIELD HAVE DETECTED SIGNALS THAT MAY HAVE COME FROM FLIGHT 370'S BLACK BOX

THIS COULD FINALLY PUT AN END THE MYSTERY SURROUNDING THE MISSING MALAYSIA AIRLINES FLIGHT.

HOWEVER, LEADERS HAVE URGED CAUTION AND FAMILY MEMBERS OF THOSE ONBOARD THE FLIGHT HAVE SAID THEY'VE ALREADY ENDURED TOO MANY FALSE LEADS.

NBC'S KATY TUR REPORTS FROM KUALA LUMPUR. Return to index of stories...

SHIPS INVESTIGATE SOUNDS HEARD IN PLANE SEARCH-PKG

WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THREE SEPARATE ACOUSTIC SIGNALS.

ONE WE SPOKE ABOUT YESTERDAY ON THAT CHINESE SHIP.

ANOTHER ONE, THAT SAME CHINESE SHIP HEARD TODAY ABOUT A MILE AWAY FROM THAT ORIGINAL NOISE, AND YET ANOTHER ON AN AUSTRALIAN SHIP ABOUT 300 NAUTICAL MILES AWAY FROM THAT.

THE CHINESE SAY THE NOISES THEY'RE HEATING, THE PINGS, ARE OF THE SAME FREQUENCY OF A BLACK BOX - 37.5 KILOHERTZ.

BLACK BOXES EMIT THAT SPECIFIC FREQUENCY BECAUSE IT'S UNLIKE ANYTHING ELSE YOU CAN HEAR IN THE OCEAN.

THE CHINESE SAY THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE HEARING, BUT EXPERTS OUT THERE ARE VERY SKEPTICAL SAYING THE CHINESE DON'T HAVE SOPHISTICATED ENOUGH EQUIPMENT ON BOARD THOSE SHIPS TO HEAR ANYTHING OF THAT NATURE, AND IF THEY DID IT WOULD BE QUITE SURPRISING.

AS FOR THE AUSTRALIAN SHIP, OCEAN SHIELD, 300 MILES AWAY IT IS CARRYING MUCH MORE SOPHISTICATED EQUIPMENT - U.S. NAVAL DEVICES CALLED PINGER LOCATORS.

THEY'RE ALSO HEARING NOISES ABOARD THAT SHIP - UNCLEAR EXACTLY WHAT THOUGH, NO MORE INFORMATION HAS COME FROM THAT.

ALL THE LEADERS INVOLVED IN THAT ARE URGING CAUTION AS WE SPEAKING, SAYING NO TO GET OVER EXCITED UNTIL THEY KNOW FOR SURE, THEY ARE ABLE TO CONFIRM THAT IT'S PART OF MH 370.

"We are hopeful but by no means certain. This is the most difficult search in human history."

AS FOR THE FAMILIES INVOLVED, MOST OF THE CHINESE FAMILIES WHO WERE HERE IN MALAYSIA HAVE FLOWN BACK TO BEIJING, SAYING THEY AREN'T GETTING ENOUGH INFORMATION OUT OF KUALA LUMPUR TO STAY AND THEY MIGHT AS WELL BE HOME.

THEY ARE ALSO WAITING UNTIL CONFIRMATION.

.SAYING THEY HAVE HAD TOO MANY FALSE LEADS IN THE PAST AND THEY JUST DON'T WANT TO GET THEIR HOPES UP.

IN KUALA LUMPUR, KATY TUR, NBC NEWS. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

WX RUNDOWN:

Warm stretch continues, but rain awaits

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

It's been a warm, sun-splashed weekend across Southwest Florida with rain no where to be found.

Expect a quiet and warm conclusion to our Sunday as temperatures slowly cool through the night down to the upper 60s and low 70s by Monday morning.

Our sky will stay mainly clear overnight into Monday morning, except we may see some thin layers of fog developing in the pre-dawn hours.

Some clouds will mix with our sunshine on Monday, leading to a partly cloudy and very warm day. Daytime highs should easily climb into the mid to upper 80s, and winds will also pick up out of the south with some higher gusts up to 20-25 mph.

Monday will be another dry day, but a cool front will come pushing our way Tuesday, giving us a decent chance for some passing showers and perhaps a few thunderstorms from the mid morning to mid afternoon time frame. This will only be a narrow band of rain and storms, it's not going to be an all day rain event.

Once the front exits Tuesday night, we'll see a short stretch of slightly cooler, breezy and less humid weather. The coolest day will be Wednesday with highs only reaching the mid to upper 70s under a partly cloudy sky.

Our overnight temps will get as cool as the 50s Thursday morning, but temperatures will bounce back quickly by Thursday and Friday afternoon as highs climb back into the mid 80s. Return to index of stories...
