NBC-2 IS FOLLOWING NEW LEADS IN THE MAYALSIAN AIRLINES MYSTERY.

MISSING PLANE-PKG

TAKING OFF ONE BY ONE AS THEY'VE BEEN DOING FOR A MONTH - SEARCH PLANES HEADED TO SCOUR THE INDIAN OCEAN…BUT NOW WITH A RENEWED SENSE URGENCY AND OPTIMISM

"Today I can report some very encouraging information which has unfolded over the last 24 hours."

OCEAN SHIELD FIRST HEARD AN ACOUSTIC SIGNAL SUNDAY MORNING, LOCAL TIME, THAT LASTED FOR 2 HOURS AND 20 MINUTES.BUT WAS LOST AS THE SHIP MADE A TURN. THEN MONDAY MORNING, LOCAL, ANOTHER SIGNAL…THIS TIME ON THE RETURN LEG…LASTING FOR 13 MINUTES…

TWO DISTINCT PINGER RETURNS THAT COULD BE CONSISTENT WITH TWO BLACK BOXES…THE COCKPIT VOICE RECORDER AND THE FLIGHT DATA RECORDER.

"This is a most promising lead and probably in the search so far, it's probably the best information that we have had."

THE AUSTRALIAN SHIP IS USING A U.S.NAVAL PINGER LOCATOR - ONE OF THE MOST SOPHISTICATED PIECES OF EQUIPMENT OUT THERE FOR DETECTING BLACK BOXES.

RIGHT NOW OCEAN SHIELD IS SEARCHING A SMALL CORRIDOR OFF THE AUSTRALIAN COAST BETWEEN THE SIGNALS IT PICKED UP AND ONES A CHINESE SHIP USING MUCH LESS SOPHISTICATED TECHNOLOGY, DETECTED OVER THE WEEKEND.

TODAY IS DAY 31 OF THE SEARCH FOR MH 370. CRITICAL TIMING AS THE BATTERIES ON THE BLACK BOX BEACONS LAST AROUND 30 DAYS.

STILL, NO CONFIRMATION THAT ANY OF THE PINGS ARE CONNECTED TO MH370.

"If they gain another acoustic event on that towed pinger locator that will be the trigger to launch the autonomous underwater vehicle and potentially camera for visually looking at the ocean floor."

"Basically they're waiting for another ping so they can triangulate the position and then put the unmanned submarine in the water so it can scan the ocean floor. This could take hours. This could take weeks. There's just no telling how long it will take, but again it is the most hopeful sign yet. In Kuala Lumpur, Katy Tur, NBC News." Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

It was a pretty nice weekend filled with sunshine and very warm weather. Temperatures will remain warm in the short term, before a cold front brings rain and a few storms followed by a brief cool down.

Partly sunny conditions will continue through the afternoon, with mainly dry weather. Daytime highs will climb into the middle to upper 80s, along with a breezy wind from the south and southwest.

Tonight, clouds will be on the increase ahead of our next storm system and there may even be a stray shower washing in from the Gulf of Mexico overnight. Humidity levels will stay high, keeping our nighttime temperatures in the upper 60s to lower 70s area wide.

A cold font will be crossing the peninsula on Tuesday, bringing us a threat for rain and a few storms by late morning through the afternoon hours. At this time, the severe weather risk looks low, however some of the storms that push through could produce some heavier downpours and gusty winds. Once the rain fades and the front pushes south, breezy northerly winds will usher in a cooler and drier airmass. This cool down will be brief, as we'll spend two nights in the 50s, with daytime highs rebounding quickly back into the 80s by Thursday.

ACID REFLUX-PKG

THERE'S NOTHING LIKE A DELICIOUS HOT SPICY MEAL. BUT FOR MILLIONS OF AMERICANS. THEY PAY FOR IT AFTERWARD!

"I tried just about everything I could to not be in pain"

HUSBAND, FATHER OF THREE AND MARATHON RUNNER B-J SEXTON BEGAN SUFFERING FROM GASTROESOPHOGEAL REFLUX or GERD- WHEN HE WAS IN HIS LATE 20s.

"I love Mexican food and I used to it it at least once and week and there was a point in this process where I would go six or nine months without eating Mexican food"

HE TRIED AVOIDING HIS FAVORITE FOODS. SLEEPING SLIGHTLY UPRIGHT. AND SEVERAL MEDICATIONS.

"just knowing that you would take a pill forever for me at early 30s was just not very acceptable"

AN ENGINEER. B-J DID HIS RESEARCH AND FOUND OUT ABOUT A LITTLE KNOWN, OUTPATIENT PROCEDURE TO TREAT GERD CALLED STRETTA.

"patients I've treated are usually back to regular food within a week"

DR. BRIAN DUNKIN SAYS GERD AFFECTS SOME 20 MILLION PEOPLE ON A WEEKLY BASIS.

"unfortunately all the good things in life cause reflux alcohol, caffeine chocolate all those types of things fatty foods"

HE EXPLAINED WHERE THE PROBLEM STARTS

"there's a valve between our esophagus and our stomach a one way valve that is supposed to let what we eat or drink pass into the stomach but then close so that it doesn't wash back into our stomach. that's the valve that's malfunctioning in reflux it's opening when it's not supposed to."

MEDICINES CAN HELP. BUT SOME PATIENTS, ESPECIALLY WOMEN, ARE CONCERNED ABOUT LONG TERM USE LEADING TO OSTEOPOROSIS.

ANOTHER OPTION IS ANTI REFLUX SURGERY WHERE A NEW VALVE IS CREATED.

WHILE EFFECTIVE. IT IS INVASIVE AND AGGRESSIVE.

SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE- IS THE STRETTA PROCEDURE.

"it's an outpatient endoscopy procedure it's done under sedation not general anesthesia, you go home later that day and usually within a week you're eating regular food again"

DR. DUNKIN USES A CATHETER WITH TINY WIRES ON THE END TO ZAP THE PROBLEM AREA. NO INCISIONS, NO SCARS.

"and it's meant to cause the collagen in the tissue to contract"

"nearly 90 percent of stretta patients say after their procedure they were able to kick their medication for good"

"very happy very happy I love Mexican food so it was really good"

DR. DUNKIN SAYS MORE AND MORE INSURANCE COMPANIES ARE COVERING THE STRETTA PROCEDURE AS LONG TERM DATA SHOW ITS GIVES PATIENTS RELIEF WHILE REDUCING THEIR DEPENDENCE ON PRICEY MEDICINES. Return to index of stories...

SPECIALIST IVAN LOPEZ TOOK TO FACEBOOK TO VENT ABOUT A RANGE OF SUBJECTS.

IN EARLY MARCH, AROUND THE TIME HE PURCHASED THE.45 CALIBER HANDGUN HE EVENTUALLY USED IN THE ATTACK.

HE POSTED "MY SPIRITUAL PEACE HAS JUST GONE" AND WROTE THAT HE WAS "FULL OF HATE" AFTER ALLEGEDLY BEING ROBBED.

PERHAPS THE MOST CHILLING IS WHAT THE IRAQ WAR VETERAN POSTED ABOUT ADAM LANZA -- THE 20 YEAR-OLD GUNMAN OF THE SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MASSACRE. "IT IS STUPID TO ME, HE WROTE, THAT ANYONE CAN HAVE EASY ACCESS TO A POWERFUL WEAPON WITHOUT BEING MENTALLY EVALUATED."

"Most of these mass shootings you have individuals who are very multidimensional. They have mental health issues but they're not debilitated by them. They can actually function."

FORT HOOD OFFICIALS SAY LOPEZ WAS BEING TREATED FOR MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES INCLUDING DEPRESSION, ANXIETY AND POSSIBLY P-T-S-D.

DOCTORS PRESCRIBED THE 34-YEAR OLD AMBIEN AND ANTIDEPRESSANTS.

"He was seen just last month by a psychiatrist. We had no indication on the record of that examination that there was any sign of likely violence."

THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CLUE MAY BE WHAT TRANSPIRED MOMENTS BEFORE LOPEZ OPENED FIRE.

THAT AFTERNOON, HE STOPPED BY THE POST'S HUMAN RESOURCES OFFICE TO REQUEST A TEMPORARY LEAVE FORM.

JONATHAN WESTBROOK, WAS A SOLDIER MANNING THE OFFICE.

HIS FATHER SAYS THAT LOPEZ WAS TOLD HE'D HAVE TO COME BACK LATER… LOPEZ SNAPPED.

PANAMA CITY BEACH POLICE AND THE LOCAL FIRE RESCUE ARRIVED ON SCENE AROUND 10 A-M AFTER THEY RECEIVED A CALL FROM HIS GRANDMOTHER.

THE YOUNG MAN, WHOSE IDENTITY HAS NOT YET BEEN RELEASED, WAS VISITING PANAMA CITY BEACH WITH HIS GRANDMOTHER.

OFFICIALS SAY THE TWO WERE CHECKING OUT OF THE CONDOMINIUMS, WHEN THE VICTIM TOLD HIS GRANDMOTHER HE LEFT HIS PHONE UPSTAIRS.

"Grandma waited for a few seconds, started calling his name, no answer.

That's when she realized he fell off the balcony."

IT HAPPENED ON THE BEACH-SIDE OF THE CONDOMINIUMS.

PANAMA CITY BEACH POLICE SAY THEY'RE INVESTIGATING IT AS AN ACCIDENTAL DEATH.

VISITORS ARE IN SHOCK, SAYING THEY NEVER EXPECTED SOMETHING LIKE THIS TO HAPPEN.

"Everything that I've heard here is like just like crazy people partying, but I've never heard of like deaths like this."

"Police officials say balcony falls are not uncommon here on the beach."

"It looks like its going to be an accidental death but it's a tragic event. Like I said he's a young man. 13 years of age and anybody that looses their life that young it's just horrible." Return to index of stories...
