FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Tonight, clouds will be on the increase ahead of our next storm system and there may even be a stray shower washing in from the Gulf of Mexico overnight. Humidity levels will stay high, keeping our nighttime temperatures in the upper 60s to lower 70s area wide.

A cold font will be crossing the peninsula on Tuesday, bringing us a threat for rain and a few storms by late morning through the afternoon hours. At this time, the severe weather risk looks low, however some of the storms that push through could produce some heavier downpours and gusty winds. Once the rain fades and the front pushes south, breezy northerly winds will usher in a cooler and drier airmass. This cool down will be brief, as we'll spend two nights in the 50s, with daytime highs rebounding quickly back into the 80s by Thursday. Return to index of stories...

RIGHT NOW - IT'S HARD TO GET A CLEAR PICTURE ON CHILDHOOD OBESITY.

ERIKA EDWARDS REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

CHILDHOOD OBESITY-PKG

Asheley Cockrell Skinner, PhD - UNC Chapel Hill - Assistant Professor of Pediatrics :18 -:24

JUST A FEW MONTHS AGO A REPORT FROM THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL SUGGESTED OBESITY RATES IN YOUNG KIDS HAVE PLUMMETTED -- BUT THAT STUDY ONLY LOOKED AT THE PAST DECADE.

WHEN YOU INCORPORATE DATA FROM THE NINETIES -- RESEARCHERS AT U-N-C CHAPEL HILL SAY -- IT'S A DIFFERENT STORY.

"For overweight and obesity there's generally not any change, there's certainly not the decrease reported before."

THAT'S BECAUSE IN 2003 THERE WAS AN UNEXPLAINED SPIKE IN THE NUMBER OF OBESE KIDS IN THE U-S. SO ANY SUBSEQUENT DROP STILL DOESN'T GET BELOW OUR LOWEST POINT.

EXPERTS SAY CHILDHOOD OBESITY RATES HAVE ACTUALLY REMAINED STEADY IF NOT GONE UP.

THE NUMBER OF CHILDREN WHO ARE THE HEAVIEST HAS DOUBLED SINCE 1999.

"Kids on these really severe ends are the kinds of kids who, they're the ones who do get type two diabetes while they're actually teenagers."

THIS GROUP MAKES UP JUST TWO PERCENT ALL KIDS -- BUT THE LATEST DATA SHOW SEVENTEEN PERCENT OF CHILDREN ARE OBESE AND THIRTY PERCENT ARE OVERWEIGHT.

AND THE USUAL SUSPECTS SEEM TO BE THE CULPRIT.

"All of our kids have for the most part really bad diets and they're not very active."

THE CONSEQUENCE OF OBESITY IMPACTS MORE THAN A CHILD'S HEALTH -- A NEW, SEPARATE STUDY FOUND THE LIFETIME COSTS OF CHILDHOOD OBESITY TOPPED NINETEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS.

ON SOUNDS THEY PICKED UP SUNDAY. ONE PING HEARD FOR TWO HOURS.THEN TWO PINGS HEARD WHEN OCEAN SHIELD TOWED THE LOCATOR BACK AT A DEPTH OF 1.9 MILES.

Sot: Angus Houston / head of the Joint Agency Coordination Center

"Significantly, this would be consistent with transmissions from both the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder.

DATA IN THE BOXES WILL LAST YEARS BUT THE PINGER BATTERIES WILL SOON DIE, MAKING FINDING THE RECORDERS MUCH HARDER.

AFTER MALAYSIAN FLIGHT 370 DISAPPEARED, PLAN "A" WAS TO FIND THE BLACK BOXES AND SOLVE THE MYSTERY

BY FIRST FINDING DEBRIS. THEN THE CRASH SITE. BUT THE AIRBORNE SEARCH HAS FAILED.

THIS IS PLAN "B." A LONGSHOT.

Sot: Michael Goldfarb / Former FAA Chief

"if we luck out, it's the first time in history we've been able to go WITHOUT debris and locate the so called black boxes"

IF THE PING LOCATION IS PINPOINTED.

A DRONE SUBMARINE WITH CAMERAS IS SET TO GO DOWN. MAYBE 3 MILES.TO LOOK FOR THE BOXES. ANOTHER DRONE, LATER, WOULD RIP OPEN WRECKAGE AND GET THE RECORDERS.

Sot: Greg Feith / Former NTSB investigator

TODAY ANTI-SMOKING GROUPS RALLIED IN TALLAHASSEE.

A LATE AMENDMENT ADDED TO THE MEASURE IN THE HOUSE TAKES AWAY THE ABILITY TO REGULATE TOBACCO PRODUCTS AT THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT LEVEL.

HIGHLIGHTING THE ANNUAL REPORT ON HOW U-S AIRLINES ARE PERFORMING.IS A DRAMATIC DROP IN PASSENGER COMPLAINTS.

"sometimes you wish they could be a little bit better about communicating delays and stuff"

BUT RESEARCHERS FROM EMBRY-RIDDLE UNIVERSITY AND WICHITA STATE WHO PUT THE REPORT TOGETHER. SAY THAT'S BECAUSE PASSENGERS HAVE LOWERED EXPECTATIONS.

"I think the consuming public has just said 'Look, just get me on the airplane.if it shows up within a half hour of when it's supposed to and gets there and my bags there, I'm outta here'"

AIRLINE CRITICS GO FURTHER. AND SAY FLYERS ARE JUST SO FRUSTRATED.

"I think that a lot of the complaints have gone down, because people have just given up complaining"

THE REPORT RATING THE TOP 15 AIRLINES IN THE U-S IN 2013.

.SAYS EVEN THOUGH PASSENGERS PAID MORE. MORE BAGS WERE MISHANDLED OR LOST LAST YEAR.

"The industry last year has 3-point-35-billion dollars gained in baggage fees alone and they're going in the wrong direction"

INDIANA HOT AIR BALLOON CRASH-PKG

S/ Brandi Runyan / Bride-to-Be:00-:04

"It's perfect. It's better than I could have hoped for."

YOU'D PROBABLY EXPECT TO HEAR THOSE WORDS FROM ANY BRIDE-TO-BE ABOUT HER ENGAGEMENT RING, THE DAY AFTER THE MAN SHE LOVES PROPOSES.

S/ Brandi Runyan / Bride-to-Be:11-:13

"He's everything that I ever hoped to have."

AND NOW THAT FIANCÉ STEPHEN RICHARDSON HAS POPPED THE QUESTION, BRANDI RUNYAN CAN'T WAIT TO SAY 'I DO'.

S/ Stephen Richardson / Groom-to-Be:19-:21

"She told me from the get go, 'When you propose, I want a story to tell.'"

AND BOY, DOES RUNYAN SURE HAVE ONE FOR THE GRANDKIDS.

S/ Brandi Runyan / Bride-to-Be:25-:29

"It was the perfect moment. The perfect ring with undoubtedly the perfect man."

RUNYAN SAID 'YES' FROM 2,000 FEET IN THE AIR DURING A HOT AIR BALLOON RIDE SATURDAY NIGHT OVER NOBLESVILLE.

S/ Stephen Richardson / Groom-to-Be:35-:40

"We had probably about a half hour of floating, enjoying it all."

AND THEN THIS HAPPENED.

S/ Stephen Richardson / Groom-to-Be:41-:45

"For whatever reason, we got over the power lines and we just started dropping."

S/ Brandi Runyan / Bride-to-Be:45-:51

"I remember thinking, we're going to hit those power lines because there was no way to miss it."

AND THERE WASN'T.

S/ Stephen Richardson / Groom-to-Be:52-1:04

"The basket, went under, the balloon went over. I think there were about 12 steel cables, quarter inch steel cables and we cut nine of them during the first big pop that you see on the video."

THEN, SPARKS EVERYWHERE AND WE'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT THE KIND BETWEEN TWO PEOPLE IN LOVE.

S/ Stephen Richardson / Groom-to-Be 1:09-1:26

"The pilot was yelling down to the ground crew 'call the fire department. We were probably there for a couple seconds, but it felt like 5 to 10 minutes and it was, 'ok, what happens now'.Somehow we drifted back off and came up and hit the power lines again and kind of bounced over them that time."

THEN JUST AS QUICKLY, THE BALLOON AND EVERY ONE INSIDE IT, WAS ON THE GROUND AND SAFE.

S/ Stephen Richardson / Groom-to-Be 1:30-1:32

"It actually wasn't that bad all things considered," said Richardson.

THEIR UNFORGETTABLE ENGAGEMENT RIDE IS SORT OF A METAPHOR FOR LOVE AND MARRIAGE.

S/ Brandi Runyan / Bride-to-Be 1:36-1:39

"Love has its ups and its downs, just like on a balloon ride."

AND THEY'VE GOT A PIECE OF THE BALLOON TO PROVE IT.

S/ Stephen Richardson / Groom-to-Be 1:42-1:47

"That's our souvenir, but the flash was so bright I'm sure it just charred instantly."

A DAY LATER, RUNYAN AND RICHARDSON ARE GLAD TO BE SAFE AND HOPING FOR A LONG AND HAPPY MARRIAGE.

S/ Brandi Runyan / Bride-to-Be 1:52-1:55

"I hope that we can celebrate 65, 70 years together."

WITH PLENTY OF ROMANTIC SPARK BETWEEN THEM TO KEEP IT GOING.

S/ Stephen Richardson / Groom-to-Be 1:59-2:01

"I think sparks in a marriage are a good thing."

JUST NOT SPARKS, THAT LOOK LIKE THIS. Return to index of stories...
