FIRST WEATHER-WX

"Showers and storms move in today"

Our streak of warm days with plenty of sunshine will come to an end today as showers and storms move in ahead of our next cold front. In its wake, a cooler and drier airmass will filter down the peninsula allowing for sunnier weather to return for the end of the week.

Skies will stay mostly cloudy through the late morning hours, and the winds will kick up ahead of a line of showers and t-storms currently located out in the Gulf of Mexico. Expect the rain to approach our far northern counties by late morning. This line will continue to sag south and east through the afternoon, keeping our daytime highs in the low 80s. The severe weather risk remains low, with heavier downpours and gusty winds being the main threats.

The rain will begin to weaken as it pulls away from Southwest Florida, and quiet conditions will be in store for the rest of the night. Temperatures will also be about 10° cooler as they bottom out in the lower 60s by tomorrow morning.

High pressure will build in across the state on Wednesday allowing skies to clear and the sunshine to return. Winds will be quite gusty out of the north and northwest as it sends in cooler and drier air. Daytime highs will remain unseasonably cool as they top out in the upper 70s. By Thursday morning, temperatures will dip into the middle 50s with a nice warm up during the day as highs warm into the lower half of the 80s. Mainly dry and partly sunny skies will remain in the forecast through the weekend. Return to index of stories...

IT'S BEEN SEVERAL YEARS SINCE THE HOUSING BOOM AND BUST SHOOK SOUTHWEST FLORIDA TO ITS CORE --

TODAY, IT APPEARS THE MARKET IS ON THE MEND --

PRICES OF HOMES HAVE JUMPED 20 PERCENT IN A YEAR -- AND AREN'T SHOWING ANY SIGNS OF SLOWING DOWN SOON --

SOME HOMES IN NEIGHBORHOODS LIKE WHISKEY CREEK IN FORT MYERS ARE SELLING FOR EVEN MORE --

STU:

"Just last year this house sold for 227-thousand dollars, today, the asking price? 325,000."

Bob Oxnard, Realtor

"Good houses, priced right, are hard to find in this market."

BOB OXNARD HAS BEEN A REALTOR FOR 13 YEARS -- HE SAYS HIS **SALES ARE ACTUALLY DOWN -- 50 PERCENT --

Bob

"Just because we don't have the inventory, but the good thing is with low inventory, we're seeing an increase in prices."

Gary Jackson, Dir of Regional Econ. Research Inst.

"Remember things that can go up in price can go down."

THAT'S ECONOMIST GARY JACKSON -- HE SAYS DURING THE BOOM, PRICES WERE INCREASING A LOT LIKE THEY ARE TODAY --

ASKED IF WE'RE ON THE VERGE OF ANOTHER BUBBLE.

"I would certainly be careful, but I think a lot of this is the strengthening of the economy."

JACKSON SAYS PRICES HAVE BEEN DEPRESSED FOR SO LONG -- THEY WERE BOUND TO START BOUNCING BACK -- RIGHT NOW, THEY'RE NO WHERE NEAR WHERE THEY WERE IN THE HEIGHT OF THE BOOM.

AND NEW REGULATIONS ARE MAKING IT MORE DIFFICULT FOR PEOPLE TO GET HOMES THEY CAN'T AFFORD.

"I really don't think housing prices are going to be going up at 20 percent per year, because that's unsustainable." Return to index of stories...

PISTORIOUS TAKES THE STAND-PKG

Oscar Pistorius again testified in his own defense.

The paralympic athelete read text messages he exchanged with girlfriend,

Reeva Steenkamp - a defense strategy to show the couple was in love.

THERE'S A MESSAGE FOR ME TO REEVA SAYING I WISH YOU WERE THERE. /

REEVA SENDS ME A MESSAGE TO SAY I MISS YOU, SPECIAL PERSON.

Pistorius claims he killed the 29-year-old reality star and model by

mistakethinking she was an intruder.

Yesterday on the stand, as his voice quivered , he made this tearful apology

to Steenkamp's family.

I CAN'T IMAGINE THAT THE PAIN AND THE SORROW AND THE EMPTINESS THAT I'VE

CAUSED YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

Steenkamp's mother sat expressionlessunlike others in the courtroom.while

Pistorious went on and on about his life's story, including his difficult

last year.

I HAVE TERRIBLE NIGHTMARES.

The defense hopes to present the star known as "the blade runner" as a man

crippled by guilt and depression. An athlete, once on top of the world, who

now lives in deep paranoia.

I'VE GOT A SECURITY GUARD THAT STANDS OUTSIDE OF MY FRONT DOOR AT NIGHT.

Pistorious's lawyers are also focused on the double amputee's disability,

trying to show that he felt vulnerable the night he shot and killed

Steenkamp.

Dan Abrams, ABC News Chief Legal Affairs Anchor

THE DEFENSE WANTS TO ARGUE THAT A REASONABLE PERSON IN HIS POSITION WITH HIS

DISABILITIES WOULD HAVE MORE FEAR THAN AN ORDINARY PERSON.

In the end the judge will decide Pistorious fate.whether this was a tragic

mistake or cold-blooded murder. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

It common to have a quiet room set up near the ICU, because family members don't

want to go far away from their loved one. They could end up spending hours, even

days here.

SABRINA SANFORT/REGISTERED NURSE

RUNS:

:29 It's heart-wrenching for a nurse to see how families go through this anticipatory grief

of losing a loved one. So you want to help, sometimes you feel lost, you feel like I can't

do any more for the patients, so what more can I do for the family to make this easier.

OUT OF THAT SENSE OF CARING, THE COMFORT CART WAS CONCEIVED.
