THIS WEEK -- NBC-2 IS SHOWING OUR VIEWERS WHAT IT TAKES TO BECOME A GOLDEN APPLE WINNER.

"You've been chosen as a Golden Apple Winner. Thank you so much!"

GPA: KEVIN BLACK-BNR-PKG

You can do it.

How's this year going for you?

KEVIN BLACK MAKES A SCHOOL OF 2-THOUSAND STUDENTS SEEM PERSONAL.

What's up Stanley. How's that leg?

HE TEACHES WORLD HISTORY AT LEHIGH SENIOR. A GOLDEN APPLE WINNER IN ONLY HIS SECOND YEAR IN LEE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

One way to win a Golden Apple at your school is to be a teacher who's

willing to admit you don't have everything figured out.

WHEN IT CAME TIME FOR HIS STUDENTS TO LEARN ABOUT HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT FROM WORLD WAR ONE.

I found that my students were a little bored with it. I was losing them.

HE ASKED A FELLOW TEACHER FOR ADVICE.

He said well I have this game I call it trench war-fare.

THEY REARRANGED DESKS TO FORM TRENCHES.

and I give them 75 paper balls and those are the grenades.

Yeah.

It's a paper ball fight with a purpose!

It was so much fun, we just threw paper balls at each other but then

we did a paper, we learned about it but it was a lot of fun.

Kevin Black's commitment to teaching goes beyond the classroom. He's

the Varsity soccer coach for the Lehigh Lightning.

Students see coaches differently.

HE FINDS STUDENTS ARE MORE WILLING TO OPEN UP TO A COACH.

They're more willing to accept advice from a coach than a teacher.

He's there. he can see whether you're on your A game or if you're slacking.

THE ENROLLMENT AT LEHIGH SENIOR IS 50-PERCENT LATINO.

We have such varying backgrounds for our students, I have students

that have lived in the United States for less than a month.

HE'S BI-LINGUAL AND HAS A GLOBAL OUTLOOK ON LIFE.

For me to be able to say I love Guatemala I've been there 30 times

they're like what? Why would you do that?

KEVIN AND HIS WIFE OFTEN TRAVEL TO GUATEMALA WHERE THEY VOLUNTEER AT A SCHOOL AND OWN A HOME FOR MISSIONARIES. HE REINFORCES TO STUDENTS HERE HOW FORTUNATE THEY ARE TO HAVE TECHNOLOGY LIKE LAPTOPS.

When I can tie-in technology in the classroom their buy-in comes fast.

HE SEES EACH STUDENT AS AN INDIVIDUAL - DEALING WITH A UNIQUE SET OF CHALLENGES.

If you don't understand something he goes back over it. a lot of

teachers teach for tests, Mr. Black teaches you for life."

We're raising the next generation of teachers, of police officers of CEO's.

Well you can do it i know you can.
