DMV GLITCH-TRX-PKG

After a frustrating few days, Tommy Hope can drive *legally again.

Tommy Hope

58:41 58:49

Its ridiculous that's what it is. it's kinda guilty until proven innocent

The problem is -

Hope says he was never guilty of being without insurance.

But he still got this letter last week from the state saying otherwise

Hope

58:09 58:14

it says my license and registration is suspended as of the date of the letter which was the day before that

The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles says 7500 of these letters went out since March 31 -

but due to a problem with a new computer system and bad info from insurance companies -

some people who got that letter, shouldn't have.

Joanne Robertson

Dir. Of Admin., Lee County Tax Collector's Office

46:37 46:44

Some of those went out in error in the fact the customers did have valid insurance:

We uncovered the problem is affecting likely hundreds of people in Southwest Florida alone -

DMV offices in Collier, Charlotte , and Lee county have been tackling all of those complaints.

Robertson

48:18 48:28

We have six office locations and in each office location We've had probably close to a dozen each day

Stand up -

11:03 11:13

Most of these letters went out last week but its taken days for the problem to be fixed so they've been driving around on a suspended license for no fault of their own

Hope

00:01 00:09

It was definitely a big problem yeah and I have to get back and forth to work everyday and I have to run around do errands and stuff like everybody else

Tonight the state says all 7500 of those suspensions were lifted and deleted from those drivers' records -

even for those who were supposed to receive that notice.

Until they re-verify all of that insurance information, the DMV won't know just how many letters went out by mistake.

In lee county, laura roberts, nbc2. Return to index of stories...
