THE MORNING CALM AT FRANKLIN REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL OUTSIDE PITTSBURGH ERUPTED INTO VIOLENCE AROUND 7-15 THIS MORNING JUST AS STUDENTS WERE ARRIVING FOR CLASS.

A STUDENT WIELDING TWO LARGE KNIVES, WENT ON A RAMPAGE STABBING SEVERAL STUDENTS.

"Upon arrival what I saw were multiple victims in the grass area on the exterior of the school."

/ FLASH /

"Further checking the first floor hallway revealed multiple victims."

BEFORE IT WAS OVER 19 STUDENTS AND ONE ADULT WERE INJURED, MANY CRITICALLY WITH WHAT DOCTORS DESCRIBE AS DEEP PENETRATING WOUNDS.

PANICKED PARENTS RUSHED TO THE SCENE SEARCHING FOR NEWS OF THEIR CHILDREN.

THE ATTACK, WHICH HAPPENED OVER THE COURSE OF SOME 20 MINUTES, SPREAD ACROSS SEVERAL ROOMS AND HALLWAYS. A QUICK THINKING STUDENT IS BEING PRAISED FOR PULLING A FIRE ALARM TO WARN OTHERS.

"The fire alarm went off, i was walking towards the exit and there was blood all over the floor.

"It just kind of hits you. you don't think it's going to happen until it happens to you. It was rough."

THE SUSPECT WAS EVENTUALLY CONFRONTED AND RESTRAINED BY THE PRINCIPAL.

"Mr. King immobilized him, pinned him down, I jummed on top of him as well and just held down his wrist and arms and tried to keep the arms stationary.

"Today our school community experienced a terrible tragedy the actions and response of our staff and students and local law enforcement officers saved many lives."

THE SUSPECT IS A 16-YEAR-OLD 10TH GRADER WHO IS NOW IN CUSTODY AS INVESTIGATORS TRY TO DETERMINE A MOTIVE. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Drier and cooler weather settles in"

Winds will continue to be breezy out of the northwest with gusts up to 25mph. Patchy clouds will linger around through the mid day hours, with more sunshine breaking out during the afternoon hours. Daytime highs will be significantly cooler as they top out in the middle to upper 70s. As a dry airmass settles in, humidity levels will drop and our afternoon will remain quite comfortable.

Mostly clear skies will prevail tonight and temperatures will tumble into the middle 50s here in town. There will be a bit of a chill in the air, especially across our inland and northern cool spots, as the mercury drops into lower 50s by morning.

High pressure will have a nice grip on our weather through the end of the week. This will keep us in the 50s for one more night, but as winds start to veer more to the east a quick temperature rebound is forecast. By Thursday, daytime highs will climb into the lower to middle 80s with mainly dry and sunny weather. Rain returns to the area by Tuesday of next week. Return to index of stories...

A STORY FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HONEY.

THE F-D-A WILL SOON ADD HONEY -- TO THE LIST OF FOODS REQUIRING STRICTER LABELING.

COMPANIES WILL HAVE TO LABEL ANY HONEY THAT IS NOT PURE. WITH 'BLEND OF SUGAR AND HONEY' OR 'BLEND OF HONEY AND CORN SYRUP'. DEPENDING ON THE INGREDIENTS.

THAT'S BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH SUGAR MAKES UP THE MAJORITY OF HONEY, RAW HONEY OFFERS MORE VITAMINS, ANTIOXIDANTS AND ANTI-INFLAMMATORY PROPERTIES THAN SUGARY SUBSTITUTES. Return to index of stories...

A MAINSTAY OF PUBLIC HEALTH SINCE THE 1970s, THE PEDIATRIC VACCINE SCHEDULE HAS COME UNDER FIRE IN RECENT YEARS.

IF YOU WORK HARD TO KEEP YOUR CHILDREN ON TIME- YOU'VE GOT COMPANY- YOUR PEDIATRICIAN ALONG WITH THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS WOULD LIKE KIDS TO STAY ON SCHEDULE- WITH THEIR VACCINATIONS.

DR. DENISE DRAGO/PEDIATRICIAN

RUNS:

1:44: When the AAP made the schedule, they didn't just choose which shots should go where. They looked at when the child is at most risk for that disease.

RECENT YEARS HAVE SEEN MORE PARENTS ENGAGE IN SHOT-LIMITING OR DELAYING IMMUNIZATIONS. AT THE SAME TIME THE NUMBER OF VACCINE-PREVENTABLE DISEASES HAVE GONE UP.

DR. DENISE DRAGO/PEDIATRICIAN

RUNS:

1:07 We see a lot more chickenpox than we used to. People aren't doing the chickenpox vaccine. Especially overseas, they've had a lot of people not doing the measles vaccine and they've seen a large increase in the amount of measles.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

As the vaccine schedule has evolved, several shots are grouped together. They are tested and approved to be given that way. It means children get 'poked' fewer times- and now new research shows an even bigger benefit: strengthening your child against infections.

A STUDY PUBLISHED IN THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PEDIATRICS SHOWED USE OF THE MMR VACCINE NOT ONLY PROTECTS AGAINST MEASLES, MUMPS AND RUBELLA- CHILDREN WHO ARE IMMUNIZED ON SCHEDULE ARE LESS LIKELY TO END UP IN THE HOSPITAL WITH ANY TYPE OF INFECTION. ESPECIALLY RESPIRATORY ONES.

DR. DENISE DRAGO/PEDIATRICIAN

RUNS:

8:21 Parents need to be more aware of what shots they did get and what shots they didn't. That's very different if they get a fever and end up in the emergency room then a child who got all of their shots. 8:39 So you are putting your child at additional harm by not vaccinating against those things at one time.

IT'S BELIEVED THE GROUPED SHOTS MAY HAVE A GENERAL IMMUNIZING EFFECT. THE LATEST FINDINGS GIVING THE VACCINE SCHEDULE A MUCH-NEEDED SHOT IN THE ARM. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER.

THE SEARCH FOR MALAYSIA 370 IS QUICKLY BECOMING THE MOST EXPENSIVE OF ITS KIND IN HISTORY.

THE SCOPE OF WHICH IS UNPRECEDENTED SAYS A FORMER LEAD INVESTIGATORS FOR THE NTSB

"In the history of aviation we've never had a challenge that comes even close to this."

MORE THAN TWO DOZEN COUNTRIES -- SEVEN CONTRIBUTING THE MOST AND AUSTRALIA TAKING THE LEAD -- 80 SHIPS AND 61 AIRCRAFT ALL PART OF THE EFFORT TO LOCATE MALAYSIA AIR 370. THE GREATEST CHALLENGE --THE REMOTE DISTANCES OF THE SEARCH.

". A tremendous percentage of the resources whether it's aircraft of ships or personnel are spending their time getting there and getting home."

AND THAT COMES WITH A HEFTY PRICE TAG WITH SOME ESTIMATES SUGGESTING A COST OF 21-MILLION DOLLARS PER MONTH.

MOST OF THE MONEY COMING FROM MILITARY TRAINING BUDGETS, SOME FROM HUMANITARIAN ORGANIZATIONS AND NOW FROM U.S. NAVY OPERATIONS -- FOR EXAMPLE A NAVY P8 AIRCRAFT COSTS ABOUT 4200-DOLLARS AN HOUR TO FLY.

THE PENTAGON ORIGINALLY EARMARKED 4-MILLION DOLLARS FOR THE SEARCH -- BUT HAVE ALREADY SPENT 7.1 MILLION DOLLARS ON PLANES, SHIPS AND UNDERWATER SURVEILLANCE EQUIPMENT.

HOW DOES FLIGHT 370 COMPARE TO OTHER AVIATION DISASTERS?

THE TWO-YEAR SEARCH FOR AIR FRANCE 447 COST ROUGHLY 50 MILLION DOLLARS.

THE TWA 800 INVESTIGATION AND RECOVERY COST ABOUT 40 MILLION, IN 1996 --ONE OF THE LONGEST INVESTIGATIONS THE N-T-S-B EVER CONDUCTED.

SWISS AIR 111, WHICH WENT DOWN OFF THE COAST OF NOVA SCOTIA IN 1998 --THE SEARCH, RECOVERY AND INVESTIGATION TOOK FOUR YEARS AND COST 39-MILLION DOLLARS.

BUT WHAT OF THE COLLATERAL COST OF MISSTEPS AND MANAGEMENT OF THE INVESTIGATION.

"Frankly the Malaysian government has not handled this at all well and that clearly has cost time and resources." Return to index of stories...

Tom McFarlin, Shooting Victim - SOT

"A foot higher, it goes right through the window."

A MANHUNT IS ESCALATING THIS MORNING FOR THE SUSPECT IN A NUMBER OF SHOOTING ALONG HIGHWAYS IN THE KANSAS CITY AREA.

POLICE ANNOUNCED TUESDAY THAT THERE IS A CONNECTION AMONG SOME OF THE FOURTEEN INCIDENTS TAKING PLACE ON HIGHWAYS OVER THE PAST MONTH, BUT HAVE NOT REVEALED WHAT THOSE LINKS ARE, NOR HOW MANY OF THE SHOOTINGS, INCLUDING A NEW ONE JUST LAST NIGHT, ARE RELATED.

"That definitely seems like a high number to me. And something that we obviously should be putting some resources toward, to get that to stop."

WHILE NOBODY HAS BEEN KILLED, THREE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN INJURED. AND THAT NUMBER COULD BE MUCH WORSE. ACCORDING TO ONE POLICE REPORT, A VICTIM DISCOVERED "a large bullet hole on the left passenger door where her daughter was sitting"

Jennie - Victim SOT

"People have actually been struck my bullets it's just a miracle no one has been killed by bullets at this point"

MOST OF THE EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS POINT TO A LONE SUSPECT FIRING FROM ANOTHER CAR, POSSIBLY WEARING A SKI MASK, WHILE ANOTHER REPORT REFERS TO A CAR FULL OF SUSPECTS "passing a semi-automatic pistol back and forth"

AND WITH THE PERSON FIRING THAT GUN STILL ON THE LOOSE, DRIVERS IN THE KANSAS CITY ARE ANXIOUS FOR AN ARREST.

Howard Schwentker
