It's a sight common in Florida since 1931.

Sot Erin Pando,

We're here to enjoy the animals and see the races and do a. Little betting."

Greyhound racing used to be popular family entertainment.

But recently interest has declined.

According to a state gambling study-

It dropped 67 percent from 1990 to 2012.

Sot mayor ben Nelson,Bonita springs

Time goes on and sometimes you can't do the things you used to do.

Society rolls on, time marches on and you have to keep up with those

times."

Bonita springs mayor Ben Nelson says lawmakers aren't doing that,

Requiring the Naples fort myers greyhound track to run races in order

to keep their poker room open.

Sot mayor

Why would you require a business to do something that makes it lose

money. Who does that benefit? Except maybe the owners of the dogs who

get to keep racing the dogs."

The senate gaming committee is looking into legislation to decouple

dog racing and poker as part of a closer look at gambling with the

push to add slot machines across the state.

But instead of an overhaul- the committee just voted to add more rules,

Proposing that track veterinarians report injured dogs in addition to

any deaths.

Sot mayor

it forces the legislature to the point where it's like, ok we need to

make special rules because the dogs are racing so much to make sure

they're treated right. Well how about not making them run so much?"

you don't need a study to see the difference between the stands.

And the poker room.

But without intervention at the state level,

The cards will remain stacked the same way.

Sot mayor

I don't understand why." Return to index of stories...

FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS---

LIFE FOR BOATERS NEAR MOORINGS BAY IS SLOW GOING.

Marilyn Tempest

Moorings Bay Resident

19:29-19:33

We like to keep things as calm as we can

BUT SOON-- THESE SIGNS WILL BE GONE.

AND NO SPEED ZONE IN PLACE.

Marilyn Tempest

Moorings Bay Resident

1:24-1:28

it's a danger to both the boats and the people

THE ISSUE STARTED AT NAPLES BAY.

BOATERS ARGUED THE CITY COULD NOT LEGALLY ENFORCE A SPEED ZONE

A JUDGE AGREED-RULING THE CITY REMOVE ALL SPEED ORDINANCES FOR BOATERS.

NOT JUST HERE-

BUT EVERYWHERE-

Mayor John Sorey

City Of Naples

04:23-04:32

What the judge did is he basically threw out all of the past history as far as boat restrictions.

RESIDENTS ON MOORINGS BAY ARE FURIOUS -

Marilyn Tempest

Moorings Bay Resident

18:10-18:17

We didn't think anything about it. We weren't part of the original issue. and all of the sudden it came and got us too.

HARRISON AND MARILYN TEMPEST HAVE LIVED HERE FOR 20 YEARS.

THEY SAY MOORINGS BAY IS SMALLER THAN NAPLES BAY-AND HAS MORE TRAFFIC.

LEAVING NO ROOM FOR SPEEDING BOATERS.

Harrison Tempest

Moorings Bay Resident

00:33-00:39

we have no commercial fishing in this bay. this is recreational boating

00:53-00:59

the boats will be damaged. the property will be damaged. it just makes no sense to me at all.

STAND UP:

27:01-27:10

One of the biggest concerns with moorings bay is the waterways leading in and out of it. people say they are too narrow. and boats going in and out quickly can be dangerous.

Marilyn Tempest

Moorings Bay Resident

20:14-20:21

We want no wake in here if we can. That's what we have always been.

THE CITY SCHEDULED A PUBLIC MEETING FRIDAY

TO HEAR IF RESIDENTS WANT THE SPEED ZONES REINSTATED.

IF SO-IT WILL BE UP TO THE STATE.

NAT

A DECISION THAT COULD TAKE MONTHS-

BUT RESIDENTS SAY IS WORTH IT FOR A CHANGE.

Harrison Tempest

Moorings Bay Resident

01:53-02:03

I hope fish and wildlife change their view and we are back to where we have been for 20 years.

Lack of use is bad for asphalt roadway and too much use during the

building boom we had concrete and rock trucks.

Lee county spends 1 million dollars a year paving as many of these

rocky roads as it can.

Take sot

We have about 3000 miles of road in lee county and Lehigh has about

1500 of them.

It's a lot to keep up with.

And that money doesn't go far.

Take sot

Traditional paving is very expensive these days- with lee county only

able to pave a small section of road. This new chip seal method will

stretch tax dollars further- doubling the amount they can pave.

I think it's hard for people to imagine having control over 18 to 20

five or six year olds, let alone teaching them anything.

HER KIDS LEARN THE DAYS OF THE WEEK THROUGH MUSIC.

Sunday monday tuesday wednesday.

SEASONS? SHE FOUND A SONG FOR THAT TOO.

"12 months in a year."

Yeah this is normal for me at this point!

KHRYSTINE SAYS THAT BECAUSE THIS IS WHAT SHE GREW UP AROUND. HER MOM RAN A DAY-CARE SERVICE.

We constantly had kids in the house and as i grew up with them that

nurturing side of me came out and I found that when I was helping her

with them that's when I was the happiest.

THE *TIME* SHE PUTS IN PROVES THIS IS A LABOR OF LOVE.

Any teacher will tell you, this isn't a 9 to 5 job. Khystine Bosland

gets to work at 7 am and typically doesn't leave until 12 hours later

- 7 o'clock at night.

Basically it's my first home because i'm here more often than I'm at my

real home.

CASE IN POINT: LAST YEAR, THREE TIMES A WEEK AFTER SCHOOL SHE TUTURED A STUDENT FROM A SINGLE-PARENT HOME.

I made him a promise that if he could learn all of his sight words by

a certain date then I would go to his birthday party.

7-MONTHS LATER SHE MADE GOOD ON THAT PROMISE.

He did it and when I showed up to his birthday party his face just lit

up. He could not believe that I was there with him.

If i could be any person she would be the person that I would want to

be because everything she does is just amazing. Makes me a little

She the perfect role model.

JUST SITTING IN CLASS FOR A FEW HOURS MAKES ME TIRED. IF YOU THINK MS. BOSLAND'S COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS 'TILL SUMMER BREAK. THINK AGAIN.

All the teachers wave goodbye as the buses drive away and you'll

always see me in the back just bawling hysterically with people with

their arms around me like you'll see them again but I'm always the one

crying.
