GAS PRICES-PKG

IT VARIES FROM STATE TO STATE.BUT AMERICANS ARE PUMPING GAS THAT COSTS ABOUT 3-60 A GALLON RIGHT NOW.

.30-CENTS HIGHER THAN TWO MONTHS AGO.

BUT ANALYSTS SAY, KEEP IT IN PERSPECTIVE.

"It was only a few years ago that almost all of us were paying about $4"

EVEN THOUGH THEY EXPECT ANOTHER HIKE OF 10-CENTS OR SO BY MAY.

.GAS PRICES ARE ACTUALLY PREDICTED TO BE LOWER THAN LAST SUMMER. LARGELY BECAUSE OF GROWING SUPPLIES.

"We're producing more in this country than we have in decades"

BUT ALSO, THE PRICE OF ETHANOL IS FALLING.

.AND. THERE'S BEEN A SHIFT IN HOW AND WHAT AMERICANS DRIVE.

"Most people, their cars are a little more fuel efficient than they have been in the past and we're not using as much gasoline as we always did"

BY NOT USING AS MUCH, CONSUMER CONFIDENCE HAS GROWN.

"Usually, when gas prices go up, consumer optimism goes down. What we've seen over the last few months is that optimism has held steady"

AND LIKELY HOLD STEADY.ESPECIALLY IF A GALLON DROPS BELOW THE PREDICTED 3-50 BY SEPTEMBER.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

We're on track to see a classic spring day across Southwest Florida for our Friday, featuring plenty of warmth and sunshine.

Today will likely be a touch warmer than Thursday as our daytime highs peak in the mid 80s for most of the region.

With our winds out of the east, expect mostly sunny weather to dominate our Southwest Florida sky through the day with just a little cloud cover mixing in with sunshine.

Humidity levels will continue to stay relatively low for now, which will certainly keep the comfort level of the air feeling nice and comfortable.

The atmosphere is far to dry and stable to mention any significant rain chance, and most of us should end up staying dry through the weekend with rain chances only at 20%.

The main focus over the weekend will be temperatures as the warming trend continues across Southwest Florida. Daytime highs over the weekend will climb into the mid to upper 80s, and a few locations may even flirt with 90 degrees by Sunday afternoon.

Looking ahead to next week, the next decent chance for rain will come in the Tuesday/Wednesday time frame as a weak cool front slides down the Florida peninsula.

This next front won't be as strong as the last one, so don't expect much of a cool down once it passes by the second half of the week. Return to index of stories...

FUGITIVE FRIDAY-6 SS

We're starting off our list with a man who had the audacity to repeatedly batter

a pregnant woman while driving down the road. Sean Cala is on the run in

Lee County, after his December arrest for aggravated battery on his 5 month

pregnant girlfriend. The victim said she woke Cala up so that he could take her

to work, which made him extremely angry and caused him to go into a violent

tirade, pushing the victim at least twice. When the two got into the car, the

situation became more volatile, with Cala continuing to slap the pregnant woman.

A good Samaritan who saw the fighting pulled next to the car, and saw the victim

screaming for help, pleading with the driver to call 9-1-1. The witness said Cala

swerved off the road several times, in between swings, for at least 5 miles until

police arrived and pulled him over. Once they did, he not only admitted to hitting

her, but also fessed up that the nearly $700 worth of cocaine in the car was his.

Cala was released from jail a day later, but has since failed to show back up for

his court dates. Cala was last known to be living in Lehigh, and upon his arrest,

he will be held without bond.

Next up is Fernando Martinez, who is facing charges of burglary with battery

and violation of a domestic violence injunction. Detectives say that in the late

night hours of April 1st

asleep with her boyfriend. When the couple heard the sliding door open, they

saw Martinez standing next to his ex-wife's bed. Martinez then threw a hard

punch at the male victim, before running out the back door on foot. Martinez's

ex-wife had a domestic violence protection order against him, and stated that he

never lived at the residence she currently occupied. Martinez was last known to

be living in central Fort Myers, however has since vacated that address.

, Martinez broke into the victim's home while she was

Next up is Bryan Ross, a registered convicted felon wanted for failing to show

back up in court after being arrested for the possession and sale of cocaine.

This 25 year old fugitive has already amassed a lengthy rap sheet, with 21

bookings to his name. Among his legal malfunctions are charges of child

neglect, grand theft auto, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, fleeing and

eluding officers, a shooting, multiple counts of battery and a long list of drug

related charges - and that's just in Lee County. He's also been incarcerated in

Alachua County for larceny theft and trafficking in stolen property. Ross was last

known to be living in Dunbar, and has numerous tattoos, including a tear drop

and five stars on his face, a rosary with the phrase "only God can judge me" on

his neck, "Shores Boy" on his left arm, and the word "hate" on his right hand.

And rounding out our list of law breakers is a man who's been passing off checks

that have been stolen out of mailboxes in Collier County. Detectives are trying

to find out who this guy is, and where's he staying. Over the last month or so,

he's been caught on camera cashing checks that had been stolen, then washed

- meaning the names of the payees and the amounts of the check had been

removed and replaced with new names and dollar amounts.

Each time, he's presented what appeared to be a valid ID, so as not to raise the eyebrows of

the tellers - however each one of those drivers licenses were fakes. While this

suspect may be local, there's also a chance he's travelling around the state.

Upon his arrest, he'll be charged with multiple counts of fraud. Return to index of stories...

THE ACOUSTIC SIGNAL DETECTED YESTERDAY NOW NOT BELIEVED TO BE FROM MH370, ACCORDING TO THE HEAD OF THE AUSTRALIAN SEARCH OPERATION.

BUT AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER, TONY ABBOT, CURRENTLY ON A DIPLOMATIC VISIT TO CHINA REMAINS OPTIMISTIC:

"We are confident that we know the position of the black box flight recorder to within some kilometers."

ONE-THOUSAND-FOUR-HUNDRED-AND-36 MILES NORTH WEST OF PERTH, AUSTRALIA.

THE SEARCH IS A RACE AGAINST TIME AND LUCK THAT THE BEACONS OUTLASTED, HOWEVER SLIGHTLY, THEIR 30 DAY BATTERY LIFE.

"We are hoping to get as much information as we can before the signal finally expires."

BATTERY LIFE ISN'T THE ONLY OBSTACLE.

SIGNALS CAN BE BLOCKED BY SEAMOUNTS AND AS THE SOUND RISES A PORTION OF THE SIGNAL CAN TRAVEL HORIZONTALLY ALONG THE OCEAN SOUND CHANNEL AND CAN EMERGE MILES FROM THE ORIGINAL SOURCE

SOUND FROM OTHER SHIPS IN THE AREA AS WELL AS NATURALLY OCCURRING NOISE CAN ALSO LEAD TO CONFUSION ABOUT JUST WHAT SEARCHERS ARE HEARING

AND EVEN IF THE WRECKAGE IS LOCATED THE SEA FLOOR IS BELIEVED TO BE ALMOST THREE MILES DEEP.

AND SO FAR DOWN, THEY MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GET TO BLACK BOXES.

"I grieve with all the bereaved, especially the family and friends of the 154 Chinese victims, and I offer them the assurance that Australia will not rest until we have done everything we can to provide comfort and closure."

"The bulk of those families, the Chinese families, say that they feel the Australians, especially after what Tony Abbott said about being close to finding that black box, the said the Australians are acting like the Malaysians, a lot of smoke and mirrors, without any real facts yet.

CHIMPS ON THE LOOSE-VO TC MON

WHILE THEY'RE ALL BACK SAFELY IN THEIR PINS TODAY.

FOR NEARLY TWO HOURS THE KANSAS CITY ZOO WAS ON HIGH ALERT THURSDAY.

A GROUP OF CHIMPANZEES ESCAPED THEIR HABITAT,

SENDING VISITORS AND ZOOKEEPERS SCRAMBLING.

CHIMPS ON THE LOOSE-PKG

CLOSING TIME AT THE KANSAS CITY ZOO, AND IT SEEMED FOR A WHILE IT WASN'T JUST THE PEOPLE HEADED FOR THE EXITS.

AROUND 4PM. SEVEN CHIMPANZEES SCALED THEIR ENCLOSURE WALL - PUTTING THE ENTIRE 200 ACRE ZOO ON A "CODE RED" LOCK DOWN FOR AN HOUR AND A HALF.

"When we walked out the door the man goes "no no no!" Take your children and go back in now. Just go back in"

"You could kind of hear it over the radio. It sounded like seven or so chimps were out."

"They put us in the penguin exhibit. And we had about 40 people in there. "

ZOO OFFICIALS SAY ONE CLEVER CHIMPANZEE RIPPED DOWN A SIX FOOT TREE BRANCH, AND USED IT TO CLIMB THE ENCLOSURE WALL.

HE BECKONED SIX OTHER CHIMPS TO FOLLOW HIM UP - THREE HOPPED DOWN THE OTHER SIDE INTO A ZOOKEEPER AREA.

"Chimps are so smart and they live in this big social group. So hey - I found a way out, why doesn't everybody come join me."

NICOLE HOLLAND WATCHED IT HAPPEN.

"We saw about three chimps on the 20 foot wall, on the ledge, and then they hopped over, one of them hopped over."

ZOOKEEPERS WALK THE EXHIBITS DAILY LOOKING FOR LARGE BRANCHES, BUT A ONE HUNDRED FIFTY POUND CHIMPANZEE IS STRONG ENOUGH TO PULL ONE CLEAN OFF A TREE, AND SMART ENOUGH TO KNOW HOW TO USE IT.

"They will use that intelligence they have to. problem solve. Well, they solved a problem."

SOLVING A PROBLEM OF THEIR OWN, ZOOKEEPERS USED FOOD TO BAIT THE CHIMPS BACK TO THEIR ENCLOSURE.

SOME CAME FOR THEIR REGULAR DINNER. OTHERS, NEEDED AN EXTRA TREAT.

"We may have had to use some malted milk balls at the end -the final enticement, which is not their normal diet." Return to index of stories...

What was that a bat? Was that a bat? Is that somebody throwing something at me? Is that part of Circus Soleil?

HILLARY CLINTON, CRACKING JOKES JUST SECONDS AFTER A WOMAN HURLED A SHOE AT HER DURING A PAID SPEECH IN LAS VEGAS -- TO THE INSTITUTE OF SCRAP RECYCLING INDUSTRIES.

I didn't know solid waste management was so controversial!

IT'S NOT THE FIRST TIME OBJECTS HAVE BEEN THROWN AT A POLITICIAN.

AN IRAQI JOURNALIST CHUCKED NOT ONE -- BUT TWO SHOES -- AT PRESIDENT BUSH DURING THIS NEWS CONFERENCE.

AND PROTESTERS IN EGYPT THREW TOMATOES AT THEN SECRETARY OF STATE CLINTON'S MOTORCADE.

THE LATEST INCIDENT NO WHERE NEAR AS THREATENING

Thank goodness she didn't play softball like I did

PERHAPS AN ITEM FOR HER NEW MEMOIR, WHICH HER PUBLISHER SAID THIS WEEK WILL COME OUT IN MID-JUNE.

UNTIL THEN, EXPECT SOME MORE DODGING FROM CLINTON - NOT SHOES BUT QUESTIONS ABOUT HER PRESIDENTIAL AMBITIONS.

And I am thinking about it.
