THIS DISEASE CAN BE IN YOUR SYSTEM FOR 7 TO 12 DAYS BEFORE ANY SYMPTOMS APPEAR. Return to index of stories...

FUEL RISES-PKG

IT VARIES FROM STATE TO STATE.BUT AMERICANS ARE PUMPING GAS THAT COSTS ABOUT 3-60 A GALLON RIGHT NOW.

.30-CENTS HIGHER THAN TWO MONTHS AGO.

BUT ANALYSTS SAY, KEEP IT IN PERSPECTIVE.

"It was only a few years ago that almost all of us were paying about $4"

EVEN THOUGH THEY EXPECT ANOTHER HIKE OF 10-CENTS OR SO BY MAY.

.GAS PRICES ARE ACTUALLY PREDICTED TO BE LOWER THAN LAST SUMMER. LARGELY BECAUSE OF GROWING SUPPLIES.

"We're producing more in this country than we have in decades"

BUT ALSO, THE PRICE OF ETHANOL IS FALLING.

.AND. THERE'S BEEN A SHIFT IN HOW AND WHAT AMERICANS DRIVE.

"Most people, their cars are a little more fuel efficient than they have been in the past and we're not using as much gasoline as we always did"

BY NOT USING AS MUCH, CONSUMER CONFIDENCE HAS GROWN.

"Usually, when gas prices go up, consumer optimism goes down. What we've seen over the last few months is that optimism has held steady"

AND LIKELY HOLD STEADY.ESPECIALLY IF A GALLON DROPS BELOW THE PREDICTED 3-50 BY SEPTEMBER.

IT'S COMMON SPEAK TO SAY SOMETHING MADE YOUR HEART FLUTTER. BUT IN MANY CASES, IT'S TRUE. AND IT CAN BE A SIGN OF SOMETHING SERIOUS.

DR. ROBERT CROSS/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

2:04 When people have a stroke, especially younger patients, there's an extensive workup done to find the reason they had the stroke. A lot of times there's not an initial diagnostic cause that you were able to find. A lot of times these what they call cryptogenic strokes are caused by arrythmias.

AN ARRYTHMIA IS A TERM USED TO DESCRIBE AN IRREGULAR HEARTBEAT. SOMETIMES CALLED A QUIVERING HEART. THE MOST COMMON FORM, AFIB- OR ATRIAL FIBRILATION, HAS LONG BEEN LINKED TO A HIGHER STROKE RISK. IT MEANS THE UPPER CHAMBER OF THE HEART IS OFF-BEAT. THE DANGER ARISES IF LEFT-OVER BLOOD POOLS IN THE HEART AND CAUSES CLOTS TO FORM.

DR. ROBERT CROSS/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

3:15 Afib is the cause of embolic stoke. A clot that forms in the left atrium of the heart because of the arrhythmia, then breaks off and goes up into the brain.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Afib is also linked to so-called silent strokes. People may not realize they suffered one, but damage from a stroke shows up later on an MRI. Which is why cardiologists are often going hi-tech, using an implantable loop recorder to get arrythmias to reveal themselves.

DR. ROBERT CROSS/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

2:32 It's a wireless system that monitors the patients to see if they have any of these arrythmias which sometimes could take months to manifest themselves.

DETERMINING WHAT YOUR QUIVERING HEART MAY BE TELLING YOU, IS IMPORTANT FOR DOCTORS IN DETERMINING YOUR TREATMENT. AND IMPORTANT FOR YOU- IN LOWERING THE RISK OF STROKE. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

HURRICANE MEETING-PKG

RESEARCH SCIENTISTS AND WEATHER EXPERTS GATHERED TOGETHER AT THE NATIONAL TROPICAL WEATHER CONFERENCE ON SOUTH PADRE ISLAND TO SPEAK ABOUT HURRICANE PREDICTIONS.

SOMETHING THAT IS ABNORMAL FROM PREVIOUS SEASONS SEEMS TO BE THE PRESENCE OF EL NINO THIS SEASON.

S/ Phil Klotzbach/Research Scientist, Colorado State Univ.:15-:20

"Well basically it just means that you have warmer than normal waters in the Eastern and Central tropical Pacific, and what that does is it alters up a lot of our winds in such a way that you get increased upper level westerly winds in the Atlantic which tears apart the developing tropical cyclones and hurricanes."

S/ Marty Watson/Reporting:28-:33

"Because of the high probability of El Nino, weather officials are predicting that there will be less storms this hurricane season."

"We're predicting a quieter than normal season, only about 60 percent of normal, a total of nine name storms, three hurricanes, and one major hurricane."

BUT EVEN IF THESE PREDICTIONS ARE PERFECT, THERE'S NO TELLING WHERE THESE STORMS COULD BE. AND IT ONLY TAKES ONE STORM TO CAUSE SEVERE DAMAGE.

S/ Dr. William Gray/Tropical Meteorology Project:51-:56

"We think this will not be a very active year, but you could have.the Gulf is particularly difficult. The Gulf is the hardest area to predict."

"There's really no way to say exactly if Texas is going to be impacted. Typically, Texas has about a one in three chance of getting hit by a hurricane in any particular year."

BUT THAT DOES NOT TELL THE WHOLE STORY. BECAUSE THE IMPORTANT NUMBER IS ONE THAT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THEIR CALCULATIONS. HOW MANY STORMS WILL ACTUALLY MAKE LANDFALL THIS YEAR?

"One thing with Texas is that even if you get an El Nino, the odds of landfall, say in Florida, tend to go down more significantly than they do in Texas. Texas has been impacted quite significantly in some El Nino years."

BUT STILL, THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT THESE EXPERTS SAY THERE WILL NOT BE LOT OF HURRICANES THIS YEAR. Return to index of stories...

MISSING MALAYSIAN AIRLINER UPDATE-PKG

The pings that we were talking about yesterday were confirmed to not be a part of MH370.

Still searchers say they are undeterred.

The Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott visited Shanghai today.

He told reporters there that they're pretty sure they know where the black boxes are within a few kilometers.

"We have very much narrowed down the search area and we are very confident that the signals that we are detecting are from the black box on MH370."

Now the head of the search, Angus Houston, refused to go that far, saying that he had no major breakthroughs to report.

But they are still searching, 1500 miles northwest of Perth, Australia.

They will continue to listen, continue to look out there, probably for the next few days well into next week and then that's when they'll start deploying the unmanned submarine Bluefin 21, which will start scanning the ocean floor.
