FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

fter another cool start, expect plenty of warmth as move into the afternoon.

We'll see mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies through the PM hours, with highs climbing into the mid 80s. Temps this evening will slowly drop into the 70s.

The atmosphere is far too dry and stable to mention any significant rain chance, and most of us should end up staying dry through the weekend with rain chances only at 20%.

The main focus over the weekend will be temperatures as the warming trend continues across Southwest Florida. Daytime highs over the weekend will climb into the mid to upper 80s, and a few locations may even flirt with 90 degrees by Sunday afternoon.

Looking ahead to next week, the next decent chance for rain will come in the Tuesday/Wednesday time frame as a weak cool front slides down the Florida peninsula.

This next front won't be as strong as the last one, so don't expect much of a cool down once it passes by the second half of the week. Return to index of stories...

ALL THIS WEEK -- WE'VE BEEN SHOWING YOU WHAT MAKES THIS TEACHER STAND OUT.

JOE MALLON IS IN HIS 13TH YEAR AS A SCIENCE TEACHER AT ISLAND COAST HIGH SCHOOL.

AS CHAD OLIVER FOUND OUT -- EVEN JOE ADMITS HE'S NOT THE PROTOTYPICAL GOLDEN APPLE WINNER. Return to index of stories...

GAP: JOSEPH MALLON-BNR-PKG

HE'S GOT LONG HAIR.

Look at that baby boy

IS CONSTANTLY ON THE MOVE. AND CAN'T WAIT TO GET OUT OF THE CLASSROOM.

Obviously I like to teach hands on.

My class spends maybe 20 minutes inside.

WHATEVER A GOLDEN APPLE WINNER IS SUPPOSED TO LOOK AND ACT LIKE. JOE MALLON ADMITS HE'S NOT IT.

I'm so out of the box. I'm running, I'm hyper I never thought I'd be

considered honestly.

HE'S A WINNER LARGELY FOR WHAT'S HE'S TEACHING OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL WALLS.

It is a farm. and we feed the school. These kids eat this stuff

WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING AT IS THE RESULT OF A CONVERSATION MALLON HAD WITH THE FIRST PRINCIPAL AT ISLAND COAST.

He came up to me and said what would be the coolest science lab you

could have? and I said one thing there's only one thing that's the

most important thing in the world - sustainability. We have to teach

sustainability.

HE MAKES EACH STUDENT DESIGN WAYS TO GROW FOOD.

He wants to see you succeed.

KEEPING IN MIND THE LIMITED RESOURCES OF LAND AND WATER.

80-percent of all water is used for farming. What they're learning is

that you don't need to use all that water for farming and we have to

use less in the future. We have to.

and Mallon doesn't give us full explanations on how he wants things

done. He just says this is how I want it to look - get it there.

You plant 'em here. then the following week you plant another and

then after six weeks that's what you get.

THAT'S *ONE* HEAD OF LETTUCE.

We're harvesting a lot of lettuce.

HE ADMITS HIS STUDENTS WORK HARD.

They laid the block. they poured the concrete. They did the liner.

They cut the holes. They ran the plumbing. They put up the pools and

what I'm getting to they built the cages.

close-up fish feeding.

THOSE ARE FISH CAGES.

It's almost harvest time. Joe Mallon figured out a way to pay for

this entire setup by selling the Tilapia.

Water from the fish tank circles through this area. It's called

Aquaponics. Joe says think of it like a pond with vegetation. The

lettuce filters the water for the fish.

JOE MALLON IS ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO DOESN'T JUST *TALK ABOUT THE PLANET'S PROBLEMS.

I believe that if you can show them what the problems, not just show

them but teach what give them solutions and focus, you know they're

less likely to be apathetic.

School's supposed to be fun.

IT'S FUN THANKS TO A TEACHER NOT AFRAID TO STEP OUT THE BOX. AND OUT OF THE CLASSROOM.

They're my super heroes. They're my army of super heroes going out to

save the world.

BOATERS IN NAPLES WANT A CHANGE.

Allen Walburn

Charter Boat Captain

50:50-50:54

We would like to see the areas that need regulation get regulated properly.

THE ISSUE DATES BACK TO THE 90'S.

THE CITY PUT UP SIGNS TO REGULATE SPEED WITHIN THE CITY.

BOATERS ON NAPLES BAY-- ARGUED IT IN COURT.

LEADING A JUDGE TO REMOVE ALL SPEED ZONES WITHIN THE CITY.

Albert Katz

Moorings Bay

54:45-54:52

we were blindsided. we didn't think that we would lose all the speed zones in the whole city, but we did.

SO TODAY-- DOZENS OF RESIDENTS MET AT CITY HALL.

THEY ARGUED THE CITY APPEAL THE SPEED ZONES THROUGH F-W-C--- MAINLY AT MOORINGS BAY.

Albert Katz

Moorings Bay

53:34-53:44

if we have wakes in that basin it will be very dangerous. not only for boaters but also for the manatees that do live in moorings bay.

THEY CLAIM THE BAY IS TOO NARROW--

AND SPEEDING BOATS-- COULD HARM JET SKIIERS, KAYAKERS-- AND WILDLIFE.

THEY WANT F-W-C TO DESIGNATE A MANATEE SPEED ZONE.

AND CITY LEADERS AGREE--

Capt. Roger Jacobson

Harbor Master, City of Naples

57:45-57:55

Take naples bay, take wiggins pass. a lot of those areas are already manatee zones, so we would like to get that same process up in Moorings bay.

CITY COUNCIL WILL DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT TO MOVE FORWARD WITH F-W-C.

LEAVING BOATERS -- AND RESIDENTS--HOPEFUL

There's a way to do it that can get everybody on the same page and hopefully they will come to that resolution and get things done rapid fire. Return to index of stories...
