TODAY'S WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.The weekend forecast is shaping up nicely across Southwest Florida.

We're in store for plenty of warmth and sun, but there's also a slight chance for a couple late-day showers along the sea breeze.

Temperatures will be the main headline this weekend as afternoon highs get quite warm; most of the region will top out in the mid to upper 80s, but a few locations may even come very close to 90 degrees.

The breeze stays easterly through the weekend at 5-15 mph.

The atmosphere has moistened up a little over the last couple days, so chances are we won't make it through the weekend completely dry.

A few isolated, widely-spaced showers may pop during the late afternoon and evening both today and Sunday, but overall, rain chances will stay around 20% through the weekend.

As we head in the the upcoming week, we'll be tracking a weakening cool front approaching Southwest Florida by Tuesday and Wednesday. This front will most likely get stretched out and stall over South Florida, leaving us with higher rain chances and more cloud cover by the mid week.

Temperatures will continue today rather warm next week with highs in the mid to upper 80s and lows in the upper 60s to low 70s. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

The weekend forecast is shaping up nicely across Southwest Florida.

IT VARIES FROM STATE TO STATE.BUT AMERICANS ARE PUMPING GAS THAT COSTS ABOUT 3-60 A GALLON RIGHT NOW.

.30-CENTS HIGHER THAN TWO MONTHS AGO.

BUT ANALYSTS SAY, KEEP IT IN PERSPECTIVE.

"It was only a few years ago that almost all of us were paying about $4"

EVEN THOUGH THEY EXPECT ANOTHER HIKE OF 10-CENTS OR SO BY MAY.

.GAS PRICES ARE ACTUALLY PREDICTED TO BE LOWER THAN LAST SUMMER. LARGELY BECAUSE OF GROWING SUPPLIES.

"We're producing more in this country than we have in decades"

BUT ALSO, THE PRICE OF ETHANOL IS FALLING.

.AND. THERE'S BEEN A SHIFT IN HOW AND WHAT AMERICANS DRIVE.

"Most people, their cars are a little more fuel efficient than they have been in the past and we're not using as much gasoline as we always did"

BY NOT USING AS MUCH, CONSUMER CONFIDENCE HAS GROWN.

"Usually, when gas prices go up, consumer optimism goes down. What we've seen over the last few months is that optimism has held steady"

AND LIKELY HOLD STEADY.ESPECIALLY IF A GALLON DROPS BELOW THE PREDICTED 3-50 BY SEPTEMBER.

FIRST WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

UNDER THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT, MORE AMERICANS WILL HAVE BETTER

ACCESS TO COLONOSCOPY. A MAJOR TOOL IN PREVENTING COLORECTAL

CANCERS, THE NEXT QUESTION IS- WHO REALLY NEEDS IT?

DR. VALERIE DYKE/COLORECTAL SURGEON

RUNS:

6:19 We always say the common symptom for colon cancer is no symptoms at

all, because polyps don't give you any symptoms. And so a lot of people avoid

colonoscopy.

IT'S ESTIMATED MORE THAN HALF THE PEOPLE WHO COULD BENEFIT FROM

THE SCREENING, SKIP IT. THOMAS HAYES WAS ONE OF THEM. ALMOST A

DECADE LATER THEN RECOMMENDED, HIS FIRST COLONOSCOPY REVEALED

CANCER.

THOMAS HAYES/SURVIVED COLON CANCER

RUNS:

2:03 If I had the means to get a colonoscopy I would have done it years ago.

HERE'S THE MOST CURRENT GUIDELINES: FOR MOST PEOPLE, 50 IS THE

STARTING POINT. PEOPLE WITH A FIRST-DEGREE FAMILY HISTORY-SHOULD

BE SCREENED AT 40. PEOPLE WITH THE GENETIC DEFECT COMMONLY

CALLED LYNCH SYNDROME SHOULD BEGIN AT 20 OR 25. ANYONE WHO

SUSPECTS SYMPTOMS SHOULD CONSULT THEIR DOCTOR.

DR. VALERIE DYKE/COLORECTAL SURGEON

RUNS:

6:19 If you had symptoms it would be like bleeding, pain, changes in bowl habits,

changes in menstrual periods. But all of those things are actually infrequent and show

very advanced cancer. Most people don't have any symptoms at all that's why it's

important to know your family history and get the right screening.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER THOMAS FOUND. DURING A COLONOSCOPY-

DOCTORS LOOK FOR POLYPS. IF THEY FIND ONE, THEY REMOVE IT,

PREVENTING CANCER FROM FORMING. THOMAS WAS TOLD BY HIS SURGEON

THAT HIS CANCER WAS ALREADY AT STAGE 2.

THOMAS HAYES/SURVIVED COLON CANCER

RUNS:

03:10 He said you're just lucky it didn't go nowhere it stayed where it was. He said this

was a very old tumor.

85% OF COLON CANCER PATIENTS HAVE NO FAMILY HISTORY- SO THE

ANSWER TO THE QUESTION 'WHO NEEDS IT?', WE ALL DO AT SOME POINT.
