SIX DAYS WITH NO NEW ACOUSTIC SIGNALS.AND OCEAN SHIELD IS SWAPPING OUT EARS FOR EYES.

PULLING UP ITS PINGER LOCATOR AND DEPLOYING BLUEFIN 21, THE UNMANNED SUBMARINE, TO SCAN THE OCEAN FLOOR IN SMALLER, MORE MANAGEABLE SECTIONS.

"This is a slow and painstaking process."

AFTER A WEEKEND OF LISTENING AND HOPING FOR MORE PINGS, A MORE SOMBER ANGUS HOUSTON ANNOUNCED THE DECISION TO MOVE ON.

"I would caution you against raising hopes that the deployment of the autonomous underwater vehicle will result in the detection of the aircraft wreckage. It may not. However, this is the best lead we have and it must be pursued vigorously."

IT WILL TAKE 2 HOURS FOR BLUEFIN 21 TO GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN - NEARLY THREE MILES DOWN.

ONCE THERE, IT WILL WORK FOR 16 HOURS.

MOVING LIKE A LAWN MOWER - UP ONE STRETCH, AND DOWN ANOTHER AS IT CREATES A 3D MAP OF THE SEA FLOOR.

"These are some good indications that we have and we're going to pursue those indications, but you know, people need to realize that these searches typically unfold over months and years, certainly not hours and days."

MORE THAN A MONTH IN AND STILL NO SIGNS OF WRECKAGE, THOUGH TODAY PLANES FOCUSED ON AREA JUST DOWN SEA OF THE SEARCH ZONE. WHERE OCEAN SHIELD DISCOVERED AN OIL SLICK.

BACK ON LAND IN BEIJING, FAMILIES OF THE PASSENGERS ARE STILL WAITING, REFUSING TO CONSIDER FLYING TO PERTH UNTIL THERE IS EVIDENCE.

"They might be alive, they might be dead. There are all kinds of possibilities."

"Now Bluefin-21 is quite a big process, two hours to get down, 16 hours to scan, two hours back up and then four hours to download all of that data. That's a full 24 hours before they can find out what if anything the submarine saw. Now as for the oil slick, they did take a sample of it. They will be analyzing it. But experts say it is unlikely that it will have anything to do with the plane. Back to you." Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Increasing rain prospects"

The weekend was quite warm as daytime highs pushed into the middle to upper 80s. A few downpours managed to make their way across the state, however they were few and far between. It still looks like our rain prospects will be going up a bit, especially by mid week with the approach of another weather system.

As the fog continues to lift through the late morning hours, we'll start to see more sunshine by mid day. During the afternoon, a few more clouds will be mixing in with that sunshine keeping our skies partly sunny from time to time. Daytime temperatures will climb a few degrees above average and eventually top out in the middle to upper 80s. It's along the coast where temperatures will be slightly cooler due to the afternoon gulf breeze. Due to the heat and humidity, a few showers will develop along the breeze and push deeper inland through the evening hours.

Tonight our skies should stay fairly quiet, but as our next system approaches cloud cover will be on the increase. It will also be a very mild and muggy night as temperatures settle into the lower 70a area wide.

A south and southwesterly breeze ahead of the cold front will continue to pump in the warmth and humidity. Even though Tuesday calls for more clouds and the chance for a few scattered downpours, daytime highs will climb into the middle 80s. It looks like this front will run out of steam across Southwest Florida, which means we'll continue to be in an unsettled weather pattern through the second half of the week. Temperatures will remain in the 80s, while overnight lows settle into the 60s. As of right now, forecast models are hinting at a drier Easter Sunday. Return to index of stories...

LIKE MANY MOMS, LORETTA BARBEE DOCUMENTS HER FAMILY'S LIFE IN PICTURES.

"all the family holidays, family vacations, weddings."

SHE'S GRATEFUL FOR THOSE SHE FRAMED. BECAUSE NOW. THAT'S ALL THAT'S LEFT.

"these are all encrypted files."

A VIRUS LOCKED UP HER COMPUTER. AND THEN ENCRYPTED THOUSANDS OF HER PHOTOS FROM THE PAST SEVEN YEARS.

NOW, SOMEONE. SOMEWHERE. IS HOLDING HER PHOTOS FOR RANSOM

AT FIRST, THE HACKERS SENT A MESSAGE.

THE DEMAND: $500.

FOUR DAYS LATER, THE RANSOM SHOT UP TO $1,000.

AND IF SHE DOESN'T PAY, THEY'LL DISAPPEAR FOREVER.

"it makes me sick."

A TECHNOLOGY SAVVY FRIEND WORKED ON THE COMPUTER FOR THREE DAYS.

HE WAS ABLE TO REMOVE THE VIRUS BUT COULDN'T REMOVE THE ENCRYPTION ON THE PHOTOS.

AND WHEN WE ARRIVED. MORE BAD NEWS.

"so the virus is back on."

BARBEE'S HUSBAND, DON, SAYS HE WAS SHOCKED BY HOW RUTHLESS THE HACKERS ARE.

"it just feels so mean, you read the language of those messages they send you, and it says your pictures will be permanently lost."

THE BARBEE'S COMPUTER IS INFECTED BY SOMETHING CALLED CRYPTO-LOCKER.

"typically, it's a 256-bit encryption, so it would take year and year to decrypt it, and you only typically have 30 to 60 days to get your files back, so it's just not possible."

PERRICONE'S COMPANY HAS SOFTWARE FOR BUSINESS CLIENTS THAT CATCHES THE CRYPTO-LOCKER VIRUS BEFORE IT FINISHES IT'S ATTACKS.

BUT ONCE YOU GET THE RANSOM MESSAGE, IT'S TOO LATE.

"Really the only way to prevent it is to not open attachments from people you don't know."

BEYOND THAT, PERRICONE RECOMMENDS BACKING UP ALL DATA ON AN EXTERNAL HARD-DRIVE. AND MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT THAT FROM YOUR COMPUTER. TO KEEP CRYPTO-LOCKER AWAY.

THAT'S SOMETHING BARBEE DISPARATELY WISHES SHE HAD DONE.

SHE STILL ISN'T GIVING UP HOPE, THOUGH, THAT SOMEONE WILL FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET HER PHOTOS BACK. Return to index of stories...

SUNNY DAYS GETS YOU THINKING ABOUT SUMMER VACATION. BUT WHEN YOU'RE LOOKING FOR A VACATION GETAWAY, BE CAREFUL.

KATHIE GREALISH IS PROUD OF THE SUMMERHOUSE SHE RENTS OUT WITH A BEAUTIFUL VIEW OF THE WATER. BUT SHE WAS SHOCKED TO GET A CALL FROM A WOMAN WHO THOUGHT SHE HAD A SIGNED CONTRACT FOR THE HOUSE.

"She said our family is coming and we're looking into renting bicycles. I said, 'I don't, this name does not sound familiar.'"

KATHIE LISTS HER HOUSE ON V-R-B-O, A POPULAR VACATION RENTAL SITE. APPARENTLY A SCAM ARTIST HAD HACKED INTO HER EMAIL AND POSING AS HER, SENT A FORGED CONTRACT. IT LISTED A FOREIGN BANK AND TOLD THE RENTER TO SEND MORE THAN THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS.

"That's just one of the tricks that criminals use to steal your money and ruin your vacation. Another ploy? They lure you with properties that are in foreclosure or don't even exist."

IT'S A PROBLEM THAT CAN HIT FAR AWAY. AND CLOSE TO HOME.

"during the summer it is one of the most common scams that bbb sees."

THE SAN DIEGO BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU SAYS THERE ARE MANY NICE RENTAL BY OWNERS PROPERTIES IN SAN DIEGO AND AROUND THE WORLD.

BUT IF YOU'RE TRICKED INTO PAYING A SCAMMER, UNFORTUNATELY IT WILL BE A VACATION YOU'LL NEVER FORGET.

"consumers can be out quite a bit of money and at the same time have no where to stay on their vacation."

THE FOLKS AT CONSUMER REPORTS FOUND MANY COMPLAINTS OF VACATION FRAUD WITH A SIMPLE ONLINE SEARCH. THE KEY IS TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU MAKE THE DEAL.

"and if you find that perfect rental, make sure you talk to the owner before you send your money. make sure the right person is getting your cash."

"check out the owner and the property before you actually do business with them. and be very wary of anyone who asks you to wire money."

THE SAFEST WAYS TO PAY ARE BY CREDIT CARD, PAYPAL OR BY USING THE PAYMENT TRANSFER OPTION ON THE RENTAL WEBSITE.

CONSUMER REPORTS ALSO RECOMMENDS USING THE WEBSITE FLIPKEY IF YOU WANT TO RENT A HOUSE OR APARTMENT. IT CONDUCTS BACKGROUND CHECKS ON LANDLORDS AND MAKES SURE THE PROPERTIES ARE LEGITIMATE SO YOU CAN AVOID A VACATION DISASTER.

"not all rental by seller are going to be scams but you want to make sure you're doing the proper research." Return to index of stories...

NEL: It's you. You said it. /

PISTORIUS: Then I made a mistake, my Lady

AND THERE'S THIS. PISTORIUS SAYS HE AND REEVA WENT TO SLEEP BY 10PM. BUT HER AUTOPSY SHOWS SHE ATE FOOD HOURS LATER AROUND ONE AM.AND MUST HAVE BEEN AWAKE.

NEL: Mr. Pistorius this particular point, I put to you, is devastating for your version because it's an objective set of facts and it cannot fit into your version./

PISTORIUS: I don't have an explanation for the questions he's putting to me.

THE PROSECUTION THEORY: HE SHOT HER BECAUSE THEY WERE FIGHTING. THEY SAY REEVA WAS A NEAT FREAK, SO WHY WERE HER JEANS LYING ON THE BEDROOM FLOOR? IT'S PROOF, THE PROSECUTOR SAYS, SHE WAS TRYING TO GET AWAY FROM PISTORIUS IN A HURRY.

NEL: She wanted to leave and that you weren't sleeping. You were both awake.

PISTORIUS: That's not correct, my Lady. It's untrue.

NEL: And that there was an argument.

PISTORIUS: That's not true, my lady.

Jeff: How damaging is this for Oscar.

Ulrich: it's deadly for Oscar to be caught lying whilst testifying

Jeff: even though they're small details

Ulrich: They may seem small. But the judge will consider all that when considering the bigger issues and his credibility.

"For the prosecution this cross-examination is extremely important. Yes, Pistorius admits to shooting and killing Reeva, but remember police have no hard evidence that they were fighting that night or what they were even fighting about. It is just a theory, and they need to prove behind a reasonable doubt that he wanted to kill whoever was behind that door. And so cross examination continues here.
