FIRST ALERT FORECAST-CLIP

Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Slightly drier today, with rain by the end of the week.

Despite the extra clouds yesterday along with a few rain areas, temperatures managed to reach the middle to upper 80s during the day. We'll get a brief break from the humidity today with daytime highs running a few degrees cooler.

Through the late morning hours expect mostly cloudy skies to hang around the area. We may see a few breaks in the clouds during the day, with a very slight chance for a stray shower mainly across southern Collier county. Now that a weak cold front has pushed to our south, a northeasterly breeze will send in some drier air allowing humidity values to drop through the day. Daytime highs will run a few degrees cooler as they top out in the upper 70s to lower 80s.

Through the evening expect the clouds to linger along with mainly dry weather. Temperatures won't be as cool as they settle into the middle 60s area wide.

Winds will turn more easterly on Thursday allowing temperatures to warm into the middle 80s. The stalled out front to our south will return north with moisture moving back into the area. As a result scattered showers will be back in the forecast, especially during the afternoon. Skies will stay pretty cloudy through Friday, as we watch another system approach the Florida peninsula. This will keep rain and a few storms in the forecast on Friday. Afternoon highs will run in the 80s, while lows remain in the 60s. As this system pulls east, forecast models are hinting at a sunnier and drier Easter weekend with highs in the middle to upper 80s. Return to index of stories...

NEW E CIG REPORT-CLIP VO TC MON

NBC2 DISCOVERED A NEW REPORT ON THE PROS AND CONS OF E-CIGARETTES.

FOR MANY PEOPLE, IT'S HELPED THEM GET OFF TRADITIONAL SMOKES.

BUT ARE THEY SAFE?

THERE'S A STRONG ARGUMENT ON BOTH SIDES.

DOREEN GENTZLER SHARE'S THE LATEST RESEARCH. Return to index of stories...

NEW E CIG REPORT-PKG

"my food tastes better. i can breathe better, I can smell things more clearly."

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN NEARLY 30 YEARS, CRAIG ALEXANDER SAYS HE'S FINALLY KICKED HIS SMOKING HABIT.

"it wasn't really hard to stop, you have to put your mind to it to stop."

BUT HE SAYS. HE PROBABLY COULDN'T DO IT WITHOUT HIS E-CIGARETTE. AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE THAT LOOKS LIKE A TRADITIONAL CIGARETTE, BUT USES A BATTERY TO HEAT LIQUID NICOTINE, ALLOWING USERS TO INHALE THE VAPOR.

"it might help the same way a nicotine patch helps or a nicotine lozenge or nicotine gum, and that is, allow them a lower level of nicotine to reduce the exposure, reduce the nicotine dependence."

MOST AGREE E-CIGARETTES ARE SAFER THAN TRADITIONAL CIGARETTES BECAUSE THERE'S NO TOBACCO, BUT PAMELA CLARK OF UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND'S TOBACCO CENTER OF REGULATORY SCIENCE SAYS THERE'S NOT A WHOLE LOT OF EVIDENCE THAT THEY WORK ANY BETTER THAN GUMS OR THE PATCH.

MORE CONCERNING THOUGH, SHE WORRIES THAT THEY'VE BECOME SO POPULAR, IT COULD ACTUALLY ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO START SMOKING.

"the smoking rates are under 20 percent and you don't see smoking on TV. you don't see smoking in buildings,. with e-cigarettes there's the possibility you could reverse that and we have ads on TV that look very much like the early cigarette ads, glamorizing it in the same way."

KAISER PERMANENTE PULMONOLOGIST, DR. ALLYSON MIRABELLA, SAYS SHE'S ESPECIALLY WORRIED ABOUT CHILDREN.

STUDIES SHOW ONE IN TEN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HAVE TRIED E-CIGARETTES. MOST LIKELY ATTRACTED TO THE TYPE THAT HAS FLAVORED NICOTINE. FLAVORS CALLED: MELON HEAD, CAKE BATTER AND GUMMY BEAR.

"the continued use of these can affect their development or growth."

"i think it's important for kids to understand that it's not something that should be picked up as a hobby. if you're not a smoker, there's really no reason to do something like this."

ERIK MILLER - CO-OWNER OF DC VAPE JOINT, AN E-CIGARETTE STORE AND LOUNGE AND A FORMER SMOKER HIMSELF- SAYS HE'S JUST TRYING TO HELP PEOPLE QUIT SMOKING AND THAT THE DEVICES ARE A SAFER WAY OF GETTING YOUR NICOTINE FIX.

"if you're trying to be healthier, if you're trying to quit smoking, this is a much healthier alternative than smoking a cigarette." Return to index of stories...

"it could be really useful."

"it would really be unnecessary"

ONCE CONSIDERED A LUXURY TO SOME, HAVING A CELL PHONE NOW A NECESSITY FOR MANY, BUT WHEN IT COMES TO CHILDREN, THAT DECISION ISN'T SO EASY.

SPRINT IS GIVING FAMILIES A NEW OPTION THAT COULD PUT MORE PHONES IN KIDS' HANDS. THE COMPANY CALLS THE WE-GO AN AFFORDABLE FIRST PHONE FOR KIDS, TARGETING AGES FIVE TO TWELVE.

"weigh all those needs. Is your child really needing to get a hold of an adult when they're alone or away from you for long periods of time?"

MARY GEISSLER SAYS THERE MAY BE SOME SITUATIONS WHERE YOUNGER CHILDREN COULD BENEFIT FROM HAVING A PHONE.

"families that I work with, many of them are not enjoying having two people in the home to look after them. so these children are often left with strangers or they're visiting a parent on a weekend and it may be up to a lot of different people to pick them up or drop them off. so a cell phone on those circumstances and helping the child learn to use it responsibly would be very appropriate."

THE WE-GO HAS SECURITY MEASURES ALLOWING PARENTS TO PROGRAM WHICH CONTACTS THEIR KIDS CAN MAKE CALLS TO AND RECEIVE CALLS FROM. IT HAS GPS TRACKING, CAN ONLY SEND PRESET TEXT MESSAGES, LIKE 'I'M AT SCHOOL' AND HAS A STRING TO PULL IF KIDS FEEL THEY'RE IN DANGER, SENDING PARENTS AN IMMEDIATE TEXT MESSAGE.

"I think it's a good idea with the limitations, but I'd rather see it targeted a little older."

"the cell phone is simply a tool. we're still parents, we must be parents, we're responsible, set those boundaries, and I think you're going to have a good experience with it with your child." Return to index of stories...

PROSECUTORS SAY, REEVA STEENKAMP WAS SCREAMING IN THERE.AS PISTORIUS WAS SHOOTING HER. NEIGHBORS TESTIFIED THEY HEARD IT.

BUT PISTORIUS SAYS.NOT TRUE.THE NEIGHBORS DIDN'T HEAR GUNFIRE.THEY HEARD *HIM* SCREAMING AFTER THE FACT.AS HE HIT THE DOOR WITH THIS CRICKET BAT.

"I hit it like this with the tip of the bat hitting the bottom panel."

THE DEFENSE EVEN RECORDED THEIR OWN SOUND TEST.HITTING A SIMILAR DOOR WITH A CRICKET BAT. LISTEN.

THEN THEY FIRED A GUN FROM THE SAME DISTANCE AWAY. LISTEN TO THAT.

THE DEFENSE CLAIMS THEY SOUND THE SAME.THOSE NEIGHBORS DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY HEARD.

HERE'S PISTORIUS' VERSION IN A NUTSHELL. WHEN HE HEARD A NOISE.HE IMMEDIATELY GRABBED HIS GUN UNDERNEATH THE BED. HE TOOK IT OUT OF THE HOLSTER.TELLING REEVA TO CALL THE POLICE. PISTORIUS WAS NOT WEARING HIS PROSTHETIC LEGS.

HE SAYS HE MOVED TOWARD THE BATHROOM.JUST BEFORE HE GOT THERE, HE HEARD THE TOILET DOOR SLAM. PUTTING HIS BACK AGAINST THE WALL FOR BALANCE.HIS GUN POINTED IN FRONT OF HIM. HE PEERED AROUND THE CORNER INTO THE BATHROOM AND DIDN'T SEE AN INTRUDER.BUT POINTED HIS THE GUN AT THE TOILET ROOM ANYWAY.

HE SAYS HE HEARD A NOISE INSIDE THINKING SOMEONE WAS COMING OUT.SO HE FIRED FOUR SHOTS INTO THE DOOR.

ON CROSS-EXAMINATION TODAY.THE PROSECUTOR ATTACKED THE DEFENSE EXPERT'S CREDIBILITY.

NEL: You're qualified as a geologist, am I right?

WITNESS: My first degree was in chemistry and geology/

NEL: I see that you're not currently affiliated with any forensic body.

WITNESS: That is so, my lady.

/

NEL: Are you a blood spatter expert?

WITNESS: I have received no training in blood spatter analysis, my lady. Return to index of stories...

BEEROLOGY-TRX PKG

THEY LEARN THE WHOLE PROCESS OF MAKING BEER AT DR. BARRY GUMP'S BREWING SCIENCE CLASS AT F-I-U

HOW RAW GRAIN IS TURNED INTO THE BEVERAGE YOU SEE AT YOUR LOCAL BAR.

"We do taste beer every class"

REPORTER: "Do you also have a class is chickenwingology?"

"I don't, the chefs might"

YOU HAVE TO BE 21 TO TAKE THE CLASS, BEARDS ARE NOT REQUIRED BUT PASSION IS.

"We spend a lot of time reading books, studying up on the subject. There's a lot of science behind it. I mean you can make beer but if you want to take it to the next level it takes a lot of studying."

REPORTER: "Do you have colleagues who say 'Gump what are you doing? You're a PhD in chemistry what are you doing making beer?'"

"Beer is just applied chemistry!"

"So this doesn't go from what's in this to what's in this without science. It's all STEM education at work."

"Brewing and winemaking and spirits are all science. It comes from the research that they put together on all the elements of chemistry and biology so it's an exciting proposition for students to get exposed to it's not just about the end product it's how we get to it."

SOUNDS LIKE MAYBE THE GREATEST CLASS OF ALL TIME, RIGHT?

"people think that we just sit here and drink all day long but it's really about the science and the art of making the beer and enjoying it,"

YOU'VE GOT TO SNIFF OUT THE HOPS.

THERE'S A LOT TO LEARN BEFORE TAPPING INTO THE CRAFT BREWING INDUSTRY AND THIS MIGHT BE THE ONLY COLLEGE CLASS IN THE NATION TEACHING BEEROLOGY.

THIS IS SURVEILLANCE VIDEO OF A BURGLAR LURKING AROUND A BABY'S BEDROOM WITH A FLASHLIGHT AT 5:00 O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING.

HE EVEN SHINES THE LIGHT ON THE LITTLE BOY WHO WAS SOUNDLY SLEEPING IN HIS CRIB.

IT'S UNCLEAR WHAT HE'S LOOKING FOR, BUT THESE CHILLING IMAGES MADE THE CHILD'S PARENTS SICK TO THEIR STOMACHS.

THIS IS THE LITTLE BOY WHO WAS IN THAT CRIB.

HE'S JUST 2 1/2.

"AS SOON AS I KNOW WE GOT BROKE INTO, I CHECKED ON HIM. I KISS HIM SO HARD. I WAS SO HAPPY TO SEE HIM. HE'S OKAY."

THE SCARY PART IS HE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW SOMEONE HAD BROKEN INTO THEIR WEST HARRIS COUNTY HOME UNTIL THE NEXT DAY.

HE AND HIS WIFE WERE ASLEEP IN THE MASTER BEDROOM WHEN THE INTRUDER CAME IN THROUGH AN UNLOCKED FRONT WINDOW.

SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS ALL OVER THE HOUSE SHOW THE BURGLAR GOING FROM ROOM TO ROOM LOOKING FOR THINGS TO STEAL.

POLICE SAY HE STOLE A BRIEFCASE AND A WALLET, THEN WENT AND BROKE INTO A HOUSE AROUND THE BLOCK.

WHEN THE BURGLAR LEFT THAT HOUSE, HE LEFT LEE'S ITEMS BEHIND.

WHEN THAT HOMEOWNER WOKE UP THE NEXT MORNING, HE FOUND LEE'S BRIEFCASE AND WALLET.

HE CALLED LEE AND SAID CHECK YOUR CAMERAS.

"MY STOMACH WAS TURNING. I WAS REALLY UPSET WHAT HAPPENED."

AND THE BURGLAR IS BOLD. LEE SAYS HE KNEW HE WAS BEING RECORDED.

"HE LOOKED UP AT SOME OF THE CAMERAS AND SAW AND HE MADE SOME STATEMENT THAT I DON'T CARE."

LEE CARES AND SO DO INVESTIGATORS. THEY'RE NOW LOOK FOR HIM. THEY BELIEVE HE'S JUST A TEENAGER. Return to index of stories...
